Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, select or create a stream, then use Live Control Room’s Stream settings to choose latency and DVR. Pick Normal latency for a non-interactive broadcast, Low or Ultra-low when viewers need faster interaction, and enable DVR if viewers should be able to pause and rewind. Copy the stream key and stream URL into your encoder, and keep the key secret.
Choose a latency setting
Latency is the delay between your encoder or camera capturing an event and viewers seeing it. YouTube’s three modes trade off interaction speed, buffering, and resolution support.
| Mode | Best fit | What YouTube says | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal latency | Broadcasts without real-time audience interaction | YouTube describes this as its highest-quality option for viewers, with the lowest viewer buffering. All resolutions and live features are supported. | Viewers see the event later than they would with the faster modes. |
| Low latency | Limited interaction, such as polls, when replies do not need to arrive immediately | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under 10 seconds. | More buffering than Normal; 4K is not supported. |
| Ultra-low latency | Conversation with viewers in near real time | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under five seconds. | Buffering is more likely, and network ingestion problems can affect viewers more. 4K is not supported. |
The Low and Ultra-low figures are approximate guidance from YouTube Help, not guarantees; YouTube does not identify a sample size or underlying study. Webcam and mobile streams are set up for interactivity, and YouTube does not let creators manually set their latency for those stream types.
Decide in this order
- Decide whether viewers need to respond quickly. If not, start with Normal.
- Check whether the broadcast needs 4K. Choose Normal if it does, because Low and Ultra-low do not support 4K.
- If interaction matters and 4K does not, select the lowest-latency mode your connection can sustain while accepting the increased buffering risk.
At 2160p (4K), YouTube says the option to improve for low latency is unavailable and streams are optimized for quality at Normal latency.

Set latency in Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
- Select an existing stream or create one, then open its dashboard in Live Control Room.
- Open Stream settings and choose the latency option that fits your interaction and resolution needs.
- Before the broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to what you will use live. Monitor stream health and warnings while streaming.
The precise encoder controls vary by software. Choose a stream quality your internet connection can reliably sustain. YouTube’s encoder guidance gives bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate, and ingestion codec; use the range for your specific configuration rather than relying on a universal bitrate figure.
Copy the stream key and URL into your encoder
The stream key identifies where your encoder sends its feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.

- In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab and locate the stream key and Stream URL.
- If you are using RTMPS, reveal the secure URL with the lock icon beside Stream URL.
- In your encoder, choose its YouTube preset if one is available. Enter the stream key when prompted; otherwise, copy the key into the encoder’s Stream Key field and the Live Control Room URL into its server or URL field.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room for the incoming feed and stream health before relying on the broadcast.
RTMPS is RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection, which encrypts the connection. If you suspect the key has been exposed, reset it in the Stream key section and update the encoder with the replacement. Only channel owners or managers can reset stream keys.
Enable or disable DVR

- If you change the DVR setting while live, the change applies to viewers who start playing the stream after the change.
- Disabling DVR is not supported for webcam and mobile streaming.
For an event where late-arriving viewers may want to catch up or viewers may need to pause, enable DVR unless the stream type or your operational requirements rule it out.
Test and troubleshoot before and during a broadcast
Run a test with representative audio and movement, choose a quality your connection can sustain, and watch stream health and warnings during the event. Use this checklist to narrow down common configuration problems.

| Symptom | Check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Viewers report more delay than expected | Confirm which latency mode the stream uses and whether the stream type allows manual selection. | For a manually configured encoder stream, choose Low or Ultra-low if interaction speed matters and you can accept the buffering trade-off. Webcam and mobile latency cannot be manually set by the creator. |
| 4K is unavailable with the selected latency | Check whether Low or Ultra-low is selected. | Use Normal latency for 4K. YouTube says 2160p streams are optimized for quality at Normal latency. |
| The encoder cannot connect or YouTube does not receive the feed | Check that the encoder has the correct stream key and Stream URL, and that the secure RTMPS URL is used if that is your setup. | Copy the current values from Live Control Room into the matching encoder fields; use the YouTube preset if available. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | Consider whether it was shared or stored somewhere others can access. | Reset it in the Stream key section, then replace the old key in the encoder. A channel owner or manager must perform the reset. |
| Viewers cannot pause or rewind as expected | Check whether Enable DVR is on under Stream settings > Additional settings, and whether the stream has been running longer than 12 hours. | Enable DVR if supported. Viewers cannot rewind to before the stream started, and DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. |
