Sometimes—but there is no universal cheaper option. A used desktop you already own can cost little to put to work, while a new-to-you machine must earn back its purchase price. Either way, include 24/7 electricity and the cost of keeping power and internet available. A cloud service replaces some local costs and upkeep with a subscription, but the right comparison depends on the service and the workload: looping uploaded videos is not the same as encoding a live camera feed or a complex OBS scene.
Compare both options over the same number of months, using your desktop’s measured power draw and local electricity rate. Then check whether the cloud product can handle the exact stream you want to run.
Start with the workload, not the price
A desktop running OBS or other encoding software can be appropriate when you need to encode a live camera, capture, or a production scene. A managed service that loops uploaded recordings may suit a prerecorded-video broadcast, but it is not automatically a substitute for a general-purpose cloud encoder. Confirm the service accepts your inputs and supports the controls your production requires.
YouTube defines an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Its encoder guide lists verified encoders, including cloud services, and advises choosing one based on your needs.

Compare total cost over the same period
Use a horizon that reflects how long you expect the channel to run—for example, six or twelve months. Treat the desktop purchase as a cost unless you already own it and are deliberately comparing only its incremental cost. Include setup and repairs if needed.

Calculate electricity from measured draw
Measure the complete desktop at the wall while it is doing the intended streaming work. A power supply’s rated wattage is not the machine’s actual average draw. A plug-in electricity meter can help; it is a costing tool, not required streaming equipment.

Use this formula:
average watts × operating hours ÷ 1,000 × electricity price per kWh
For a 30-day month of 720 hours, a hypothetical 120 W average draw uses 86.4 kWh; 200 W uses 144 kWh. Multiply the result by your own marginal electricity rate. Those wattages are assumptions used in a StreamNeo comparison, not independent measurements or a claim about typical office desktops. Your measured result may differ substantially.

Include the costs that are easy to overlook
- Desktop: purchase price or incremental cost if already owned, repairs, electricity, a stable internet connection, and any backup power or connection you consider necessary.
- Cloud: the selected plan or compute configuration, storage, bandwidth, and any setup charges. A headline hourly GPU rate alone does not establish a suitable or complete streaming configuration.
- Both: your time setting up, monitoring, and recovering the stream, along with the practical cost of an interruption.
Check the stream settings the machine must sustain
The required hardware or cloud configuration depends on the resolution, frame rate, codec, and production complexity you choose. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds.
For H.264, YouTube’s recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; its table also gives 14 Mbps and 17 Mbps, respectively, as recommended values. Follow the full table for your chosen format and settings rather than treating these examples as universal requirements.

- Use RTMPS if possible: YouTube recommends it as a secure extension to RTMP.
- Make sure the upload connection can reliably sustain the selected stream, with room for network variation.
- Test before going live and monitor YouTube’s stream health during the broadcast.
YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into formats for viewers, so the encoder sends an ingestion stream; it does not need to generate every viewer rendition.

Cloud services differ in both workload and billing model. For example, Gyre’s pricing page, checked on October 3, 2026, lists Start at $49 per month for one HD stream, Start+ at $99 per month for four HD streams or one 4K stream, and PRO+ at $169 per month for eight HD streams or two 4K streams. These are that vendor’s advertised prices, not market averages; the page also distinguishes storage and quality by plan. Check its current pricing and plan details before deciding whether it fits your workflow.

PowerGPU publishes hourly cloud-GPU rates and storage and bandwidth charges, but those figures alone do not show that a particular configuration is suitable for YouTube streaming or what the full bill will be. Estimate the complete configuration and usage rather than comparing an hourly compute figure directly with a desktop’s electricity bill.
When each option can make financial sense
A desktop may be cheaper when
- You already own a suitable machine, or can buy one at a price low enough to justify against your planned streaming period.
- Its measured electricity cost is acceptable at your local tariff.
- Your internet and power are already reliable enough, or you have accounted for the backup you need.
- You are prepared to maintain the operating system, encoder, and stream recovery.
A cloud service may be worth the recurring fee when
- You do not want a computer and home internet connection to be prerequisites for the stream staying online.
- The service is designed for your workload, whether that is uploaded-video looping or live production encoding.
- Its subscription and included features cost less than the desktop’s full cost over your comparison period—or the reduced maintenance and local dependency justify the difference to you.
- You have verified what happens after a failed stream, provider interruption, or billing lapse.

- Measure the desktop’s wall draw under the intended streaming workload; estimate monthly kWh using the formula above and apply your own tariff.
- Add desktop purchase or repair costs, internet and backup costs, and the value you place on maintaining it.
