First reconcile what YouTube reports and pays, then determine how the receipts are classified under your circumstances. For AY 2026–27, if they are profits and gains of business or profession, the Income Tax Department describes ITR-3 as the relevant form; ITR-4 is available only to eligible taxpayers using an allowed presumptive computation.
What counts as membership and Super Chat income?
YouTube channel memberships involve recurring monthly payments from members in exchange for channel perks. Super Chat lets viewers pay to highlight messages during a live chat or Premiere. YouTube says creators may be liable for tax in their country of residence on income earned from monetised videos, so the fact that payments come through YouTube does not by itself settle their Indian tax treatment.
YPP creators are paid through AdSense for YouTube. The monthly payment cycle finalizes prior-month earnings and posts the balance to the payments account; transaction details can show adjustments and applicable tax deductions. The amount a creator receives in a bank account therefore may not be the same as the audience’s total payments or the amount shown in an initial revenue report.
Which Indian ITR form applies?
Choose the return form only after deciding how the receipts are classified under applicable Indian law and your facts. The platform’s description of a feature or its payout mechanics is not, on its own, a ruling about the income head.
| Form | When it may be relevant | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| ITR-3 | For an individual or HUF with profits and gains of business or profession, as described by the Income Tax Department for AY 2026–27. | It is the business/profession route; deciding whether your creator receipts belong in that category requires applying the law to your circumstances. |
| ITR-4 | An optional simplified return for taxpayers who meet the applicable conditions and use an allowed presumptive computation under sections 44AD, 44ADA or 44AE. | The AY 2026–27 overview includes resident status and total income up to ₹50 lakh among its conditions, along with exclusions. It does not establish that YouTube income qualifies under any particular presumptive section. |
| ITR-2 | For income other than profits and gains of business or profession. | It is not the form for a return that includes business/profession income. |
These are form-selection descriptions, not a determination that every creator’s memberships or Super Chats have the same tax classification. If the classification or presumptive eligibility is unclear, get advice based on your channel activity, agreements, other income and current law before filing.

Reconcile the platform records before filing
Keep records that let you trace channel earnings through adjustments and payments. Useful records include:
- YouTube channel revenue reports, including reports for memberships and Super Chat.
- AdSense for YouTube transaction history and payment details, including adjustments and tax deductions.
- Payout confirmations and bank statements showing amounts received and dates.
- The partner agreement applicable to your account, together with any records of fees, deductions or changes in terms.
- AdSense tax statements and evidence of any foreign tax withheld.
Reconcile the reports against the payment account and bank records rather than assuming that fan payments, reported creator earnings and cash received are identical. YouTube’s Commerce Product Module help page describes a 70% share of net revenues for memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks, but directs partners to their own agreement for the exact revenue-share terms. That platform share is not an Indian income-tax rate and does not, by itself, determine what amount or income head you should report.

How to treat US tax withheld by Google
Google requires YPP creators to submit tax information and says it may withhold tax on earnings from US viewers. Google also says that, if tax information is not provided, it may have to deduct up to 24% of total earnings worldwide. That is a maximum described in Google’s guidance for missing tax information, not a statement that every Indian creator has that amount withheld. The actual treatment depends on the account’s submitted tax information and facts.

US withholding does not replace the separate question of Indian tax liability. Check the actual AdSense for YouTube tax and transaction statements, and assess independently whether you qualify to claim a foreign tax credit in India and what documentation or form steps apply. The platform’s withholding guidance does not establish an individual creator’s eligibility for that credit.
GST is a separate question
Income-tax return classification and GST treatment are separate issues. Whether a particular creator’s arrangement with Google is an export of services, what place-of-supply rules apply, or whether registration or a Letter of Undertaking is required can depend on the contracting Google entity, recipient and place-of-supply facts, consideration, registration status and current GST rules.
Rank #3
General GST materials do not establish the answer for every YouTube creator. Do not assume that a payout is an export or that GST registration or an LUT is or is not required based only on the fact that YouTube pays you. Obtain current, individualized GST advice before taking a filing position.
Common filing mistakes to avoid
- Picking a form from the platform feature name: memberships and Super Chat describe ways viewers pay, not a universal Indian tax head.
- Treating ITR-4 as automatically available: eligibility and the permitted presumptive section must be checked against your facts; creator receipts are not shown by these form descriptions to qualify automatically.
- Reporting only the bank deposit without reconciliation: review reported earnings, adjustments, deductions and agreement terms alongside payouts.
- Assuming US withholding settles Indian tax: check Indian liability and any foreign-tax-credit claim separately.
- Calling a payout an export without checking GST facts: the contracting entity and other transaction details can matter.
A separate note for channels that run prerecorded live streams
If your channel also plays uploaded videos as a continuous YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; the cloud keeps the stream running without a computer staying on. That service does not determine how channel income is classified or reported for tax. Learn more at StreamNeo or start the free first day.
