You do not need to convert every video to 30 fps. For ordinary YouTube uploads, keep each file at the frame rate at which it was recorded when practical. For a continuous live output, choose one cadence suited to the channel’s footage and encoder, then conform assets that need it and test them for judder, dropped frames, and audio-sync problems.
Why uploads and continuous streams need different treatment
YouTube recommends encoding and uploading a video at its recorded frame rate. Its common upload rates include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps; other rates, including 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94, are also acceptable. That guidance does not mean every file in a library must be converted to one rate.
A continuous live stream is different: the encoder sends one configured output cadence for the stream. When clips with different source rates are joined in a single playout, the playback pipeline must handle those differences. Convert only when the pipeline needs a common cadence, rather than assuming that a single rate is best for all footage.

Inventory your footage before choosing a target
Inspect the files you actually plan to play. Record each file’s frame rate, duration, and scan type, and distinguish exact from fractional rates such as 24 versus 23.976 or 30 versus 29.97. Check whether a file uses variable frame rate or is interlaced; those characteristics affect how it should be handled.
YouTube’s accepted rates include both common whole-number rates and fractional rates. Do not round a fractional rate to a whole number just because the numbers look close. An inspection tool can help you identify file properties, but YouTube does not prescribe a particular utility or a universal target rate.

Choose a cadence based on the channel, not habit
For separate uploads, preserve each video’s recorded rate where practical. For one continuous output, choose a target based on the dominant footage, the kind of motion viewers will see, and the output options of the encoder or playout system. There is no universally correct target in YouTube’s guidance.
- If most footage is 25 fps, converting everything to 30 fps does not create extra captured motion; it changes how frames are sampled or repeated on the output timeline.
- If the library mixes rates, compare representative clips at the intended output cadence before converting the whole collection.
- Keep footage at its native rate when the playout path handles it cleanly and there is no operational need to conform it.
YouTube recommends automatic detection of live resolution and frame rate by default. Manual resolution selection requires a custom stream key. Live encoder output supports up to 60 fps. Use the live settings YouTube offers for the encoder and stream key in use rather than assuming a chosen rate can be imposed independently of the rest of the setup.

What frame-rate conversion changes
Converting to a constant frame rate is not just changing a label in the file metadata. FFmpeg’s fps filter makes a constant-rate output by duplicating or dropping frames as needed. A different filter, framerate, interpolates new frames from existing ones; it is not designed to work correctly on interlaced media, which should be deinterlaced first. See the FFmpeg filters documentation.
- Dropped frames: reduce the number of sampled moments and can make motion look less smooth.
- Duplicated frames: preserve duration but can appear as judder or brief holds.
- Interpolated frames: create synthetic in-between motion and can produce artifacts around occlusions, fast movement, and scene cuts.
The visible result depends on the clip and conversion settings. Review the output rather than assuming any method will look clean. A correct conversion should preserve the intended duration and audio synchronization; retagging a file or changing timestamps alone is not equivalent to resampling its frames.

Deinterlace interlaced footage before upload or interpolation
YouTube instructs creators to deinterlace interlaced footage before upload. Its example converts 1080i60 to 1080p30. Interlaced video carries fields, not the same kind of progressive frames as a 60 fps progressive clip; do not simply relabel 60 interlaced fields per second as 60 progressive frames per second.
Deinterlace first if you plan to use FFmpeg’s interpolation-based framerate filter. YouTube’s upload guidance and FFmpeg’s filter documentation both distinguish this handling from ordinary progressive footage.

Test a short playlist before putting the channel on air
- Build a representative test set. Include the lowest and highest source rates, typical pans or fast game motion, titles, scene cuts, and interlaced archive clips if you have them.
- Run it through the actual playout and encoder path. Test the same output settings and stream-key configuration intended for the continuous channel.
- Check the result. Watch for repeated or dropped frames, synthetic-motion artifacts, changes in clip duration, and audio drift at joins. Confirm that the encoder reports the expected output rate.
- Test before a real event and monitor during it. YouTube recommends pre-event tests with audio and movement similar to the real stream, and advises monitoring stream health and messages while live.
- Keep an asset record. For continuous operations, note each file’s source rate and scan type, and any converted output properties. This makes later troubleshooting more direct.
Converting assets before they enter the always-on playout path can simplify a pipeline that requires one cadence. It also adds processing and review work, so use it where it solves a real compatibility or consistency problem.
Live settings that matter alongside frame rate
YouTube Live supports encoder output up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Follow the resolution- and format-specific recommendations in its live encoder settings guidance; bitrate is not one universal value and varies by resolution, frame-rate class, and SDR or HDR.
For uploads, use the recorded frame rate when practical and deinterlace interlaced material. YouTube’s upload encoding table separates standard frame rates (24/25/30) from high frame rates (48/50/60), with bitrate recommendations that vary by resolution and SDR/HDR. Check the current table when preparing files because platform recommendations can change.
Common problems and practical fixes
- Motion judders after conversion: the target cadence may require repeated or dropped frames. Compare the clip at its native rate and at the selected output rate; reconsider whether conversion is needed or whether another target better fits the footage.
- Fast movement looks warped: interpolation may have created synthetic frames that fail around motion or occlusions. Try a duplication/drop conversion or retain the source rate if the playout path allows it, then review again.
- Clip duration or audio sync changes: check that the conversion resampled frames while preserving timing, rather than merely changing a frame-rate label or timestamps. Verify audio sync at playlist joins.
- Interlaced footage shows combing or poor motion: deinterlace it before upload or before using an interpolation filter. Do not treat interlaced fields as progressive frames.
- The live encoder is not using the expected cadence: check its configured output and YouTube’s stream health messages. YouTube recommends automatic detection by default; manual resolution selection uses a custom stream key.
