Preserve the original resolution and frame rate unless you have a specific reason to change them, then use YouTube’s recommended SDR bitrate for your format as a starting point. Export and inspect a representative sample before encoding the full video: there is no universal compression ratio that guarantees a particular file size or visual quality.
Choose the right output format and settings
YouTube accepts ProRes, but converting a large master to H.264 can make a more compact upload copy. YouTube’s recommended upload settings specify MP4 with H.264, progressive scan, High Profile, variable bitrate, and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. YouTube says no bitrate limit is required; its published bitrate figures are reference recommendations, not guarantees of file size or quality. - Container and codec: MP4 with H.264.
- Scan: Progressive.
- Frame rate: Match the recording. YouTube’s guidance says, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.”
- Bitrate mode: Variable bitrate (VBR), if your encoder offers the setting.
- SDR color: Use BT.709 tagging.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio at 48 kHz. AAC-LC is a practical choice for a conventional stereo export; check channel settings for multichannel audio.
In your editor or encoder, make a new delivery export rather than overwriting the ProRes original. The exact control names differ between applications; choose H.264, MP4, and the matching frame rate, then set the resolution and bitrate described below.
Set a starting bitrate for SDR
The following are YouTube’s published SDR upload bitrate recommendations, accessed in 2026. Choose the row that matches the output resolution and frame-rate class. These figures are starting points, not measured ProRes-to-H.264 savings.

These recommendations are for SDR. Actual file size depends on the export duration and bitrate, while visible results depend on the footage and encoder. Lowering bitrate reduces encoded data, but fast movement, fine textures, and gradients can reveal blocking or smearing. If a file is still too large, test a lower bitrate rather than assuming a single setting will suit every video.
Convert and check a sample before the full export
- Keep the original. Retain your ProRes file as the archive or master. Create a separate H.264 delivery copy.
- Match the project. Set MP4/H.264 output to progressive scan. Keep the source dimensions and frame rate unless a delivery requirement or file-size priority justifies changing resolution. Avoid changing frame rate merely to shrink the file.
- Set SDR color and bitrate. For an SDR project, use BT.709 tagging and the relevant YouTube reference bitrate above as your initial target.
- Export a representative section. Include fast motion, fine detail, gradients, and typical audio. Check playback, color, motion detail, and sound; look for blocking, smearing, or unexpected color shifts.
- Adjust based on the sample. If the file is too large, reduce bitrate in measured steps and compare. If quality becomes unacceptable, raise the bitrate or consider whether a lower resolution is an acceptable trade-off.
- Export and upload the full copy. Allow YouTube processing to finish before judging playback on the platform; upload recommendations do not guarantee a particular transcoded result.
Apple Compressor is one documented Mac option for H.264 encoding and exposes controls involving the quality-to-file-size trade-off; its interface may change. Other editors can work too if they offer H.264 encoding and bitrate control. A paid application is not inherently required. Apple’s Compressor User Guide describes its H.264 controls.

Do not apply SDR H.264 settings blindly to HDR
HDR export needs the right transfer function, primaries, matrix metadata, and bit depth. YouTube’s HDR guidance describes Rec. 2020 primaries and matrix with PQ or HLG transfer characteristics, and recommends VP9 Profile 2, AV1, or HEVC/H.265 for HDR. It notes that ProRes and H.264 10-bit may require very high bitrates. If preserving HDR matters, verify your editor’s HDR export and metadata workflow instead of treating a standard 8-bit SDR H.264 preset as interchangeable. See YouTube’s HDR upload guidance.
What to expect from the size reduction
There is no supported universal percentage reduction or guaranteed output size for converting ProRes to H.264. The final size varies with bitrate, duration, and encoder behavior; visual quality also varies with the material. Use a sample export to find a sensible balance rather than relying on a promised compression ratio. Lower resolution can reduce output size, but it also discards spatial detail, so it is an editorial trade-off rather than an automatic setting.
