If your Raspberry Pi is getting hot during a 24/7 YouTube stream, first identify the exact Pi model and check its temperature and throttling while the stream is actually running. A warm board alone does not prove cooling has failed, and a fan is not automatically necessary. Improve airflow and placement first; add model-compatible cooling only if sustained heat or throttling persists. No verified test establishes a special India-specific temperature limit or how a particular Pi will perform streaming in your installation.
Does a Raspberry Pi need a fan for 24/7 streaming?
Not necessarily. Raspberry Pi says most of its devices rely on internal dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) and thermal throttling without extra cooling. Whether a particular board needs more cooling depends on its model, workload, enclosure, attachments, airflow, and the ambient conditions where it runs. The fact that a stream runs continuously is not, by itself, proof that the Pi is overheating.
Do not treat a temperature reading in isolation as a cooling verdict. Check whether the board is throttling or losing performance during a representative stream, including the warmest period you expect at the installation site. A stream may use different amounts of CPU depending on the software, capture method, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and encoding method; those details are not known for your setup.
Identify the board and measure the real stream workload
- Record the hardware. Note the Pi model and revision, case, HATs or other attachments, power supply, and how the board is mounted. Do not apply Pi 5 temperature guidance or accessory advice to an unidentified board.
- Record the stream configuration. Note the streaming software, capture method, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and whether encoding is performed by the CPU or another method. Do not assume the stream is CPU-intensive or mostly offloaded without checking your actual configuration.
- Observe a representative run. Check temperature and throttling while the YouTube stream is operating, not only at idle. Include the hottest expected operating period and note the room or enclosure ambient temperature at the deployment location.
- Watch for separate power or connection symptoms. Investigate those independently; a fan will not correct an electrical supply fault or a network problem. The information available here does not establish that your installation has an undervoltage issue.
Raspberry Pi’s published Pi 5 testing used a synthetic sustained-load stress test, not a YouTube stream. In that test, the uncoolled processor exceeded the thermal limit; with the Active Cooler it stabilized around 64°C, while the Pi 5 fan case reached reported maxima of about 72°C with its lid removed and 74°C with it fitted. Raspberry Pi also reported approximately 65°C at idle in open air without cooling. These are the manufacturer’s observations under its test conditions, not expected temperatures for your 24/7 stream or an Indian installation.

What temperature is too hot?
In its Pi 5 cooling article, Raspberry Pi states that boards begin throttling the processor at 80°C and throttle further at the maximum temperature of 85°C. Treat those figures as the manufacturer’s description of thermal behavior—not as recommended operating targets, a promise about every board or stream setup, or a substitute for checking your own device’s throttling.
Raspberry Pi documents temperature-controlled fan behavior for the Pi 5: the fan is off below 50°C, runs at low speed (30%) at 50°C, medium (50%) at 60°C, high (70%) at 67.5°C, and full speed (100%) at 75°C, with 5°C hysteresis. The thresholds can be adjusted through device-tree overlay settings. These details apply to the documented Pi 5 fan setup; do not assume the same thresholds or fan compatibility for another model.

How do I stop my Raspberry Pi from overheating while streaming?
1. Improve airflow and placement before buying a cooler
- Keep ventilation openings clear and avoid trapping hot exhaust in a closed or cramped space.
- Give air room to circulate around the board; do not place it flat against a heat-insulating surface.
- If you are using an uncased board, consider mounting it on its edge so air can circulate on both sides. This is an airflow principle, not a guaranteed temperature reduction for every model or build.
- Check nearby heat sources and the airflow around the case, cables, and attachments. A HAT or enclosure can affect clearance and circulation.
Raspberry Pi’s cooling guidance identifies persistent workload and high ambient temperature as reasons to consider extra cooling. In India, measure the ambient temperature at the actual installation site rather than assuming that a particular city, season, or climate requires a fan. The available evidence does not establish an India-specific adjustment to Pi thermal limits.
2. Choose cooling that fits the exact board
Possible approaches include placement and airflow changes, a passive heatsink or ventilated enclosure, and active fan cooling. There is no established winner for an unspecified board and installation. Before buying anything, check exact model compatibility and clearance for the case, HATs, and cables. Also consider noise, dust exposure and maintenance, power or connector requirements, local availability, and cost.

If—and only if—you have a Raspberry Pi 5 and your measurements show persistent heat or throttling after airflow improvements, compare the official Raspberry Pi 5 Active Cooler with the Pi 5 case fan if that case form factor suits your build. Raspberry Pi’s synthetic test demonstrates that its cooling options managed that test workload; it does not establish which one performs better for your stream. Raspberry Pi favors the Active Cooler over its fan case for overclockers, a finding that should not be generalized to every 24/7 stream.
3. Repeat the measurement after each change
- Run the same stream configuration for a comparable period and under comparable ambient conditions.
- Compare sustained temperature and whether throttling or performance problems occur; do not compare an idle reading with a loaded run.
- Check practical trade-offs too: fan noise, airflow, fit around attachments and cables, and dust or maintenance needs.
- If the problem remains, revisit workload, placement, power, and connectivity separately rather than assuming a more powerful fan is the only answer.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a separate option if your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel continuously rather than to cool a Raspberry Pi. It does not solve a Pi’s thermal problem or stream from a camera: it runs uploaded recordings or playlists in the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on for the stream.

Will a Raspberry Pi overheat simply because the stream runs all day?
Not necessarily. Continuous operation alone does not show whether a particular board is overheating; assess its temperature and throttling during the actual workload.
