Use object storage as the origin for your video files, prepare those files for the playback formats your audience needs, and put a CDN between the storage bucket and viewers. A bucket alone does not create an adaptive stream: encoding, packaging, caching, access control, and byte-range behavior all affect whether playback starts quickly and seeking works reliably.
How object storage fits into video delivery
Object storage holds media as addressable objects in a bucket. In a typical video-on-demand (VOD) setup, it is the origin layer: when a CDN does not have a requested object cached, the CDN fetches it from the bucket, then can serve cached copies to viewers. AWS documents this S3-plus-CloudFront pattern for on-demand video hosting (Amazon S3 documentation).
Object storage is not, by itself, a streaming workflow. A source MP4 can be stored and delivered, but adaptive streaming generally requires encoding and packaging into segments and manifest files. The player requests the manifest and then the media segments it specifies. AWS lists HLS, MPEG-DASH, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF as common delivery formats (AWS MediaConvert format documentation).
Build a VOD architecture
- Upload the source asset. Put the original recording in an object-storage bucket. Choose the bucket region with your audience and media-processing workflow in mind; there is no universally best location.
- Encode and package for playback. Create the formats, renditions, segments, and manifest files your player supports. Keep source files separate from delivery outputs so you can repackage or regenerate them without confusing the player-facing paths.
- Store the packaged outputs. Place manifests and media segments in the bucket, preserving the directory and naming structure expected by the manifest.
- Configure a CDN origin. Point the CDN at the bucket and define the cache behavior for manifests and media. Route player requests through the CDN rather than sending every viewer directly to the bucket. Google recommends CDN delivery for customer traffic in both VOD and livestream workloads (Google Cloud media workload guidance).
- Set access and validate playback. Restrict direct origin access if your design requires it, then test the public playback path: manifest retrieval, segment retrieval, seeking, cache misses, and access-denied behavior.
AWS provides a documented S3 and CloudFront tutorial for on-demand video, while Google’s guidance emphasizes placing storage and compute in a way that suits the transcoding pipeline and audience geography (AWS S3 tutorial; Google Cloud media workload guidance).

Adapt the design for livestreaming
For live delivery, a transcoder or media pipeline writes output objects while viewers fetch them through a CDN. Google describes this concurrent-write-and-read pattern for livestream buckets and notes that bucket location should account for both transcoding compute and end-user geography (Google Cloud media workload guidance).
Segment duration is a latency and reliability choice, not a universal constant. Google recommends a lowest segment size of two seconds for livestreams in its guidance, while cautioning that shorter segments are more sensitive to long-tail write latency. Longer segments may help when viewers are far from the bucket. Treat this as Google’s provider-specific guidance and test against your own pipeline and latency target.

Check uploads, byte ranges, and cache behavior
Choose a dependable upload path
Large source files need an upload method that can tolerate interruptions and make efficient use of parallelism. Cloudflare R2 documentation recommends single PUT for smaller uploads and multipart upload for large files or when resumability or parallelism matters; it identifies video as a relevant use case. Its guide gives approximately 100 MB as the point below which a single upload is suitable, and supports multipart objects up to 5 TiB. These are R2-specific service limits and recommendations, not general object-storage limits (Cloudflare R2 upload guide).
Verify seeking and partial responses
Video players and CDNs may use HTTP byte-range requests to fetch only part of an object, especially for seeking or large media. Test the origin and CDN together. Where required by your chosen CDN, check for a valid 206 Partial Content response, a correct Content-Range, the expected object length, and usable validators such as ETag or Last-Modified. Google Media CDN documents origin range-response criteria; its guidance says objects larger than 1 MiB are fetched as byte-range requests of up to 2 MiB each. These are Media CDN-specific behaviors, not universal thresholds (Google Media CDN range requests).

Range handling can differ between client requests and origin fetches. Cloudflare notes that its origin range requests may be aligned differently from the client’s requested range, so do not assume the origin sees exactly the same byte boundaries the player requested (Cloudflare cache behavior).
Plan for cache freshness
CDN caching reduces repeated origin reads, but it introduces a freshness decision. Cloudflare describes R2 tiered read caching and says reads through a custom domain can use Cloudflare Cache; cached data may not immediately reflect a changed object. Use versioned object names for immutable media where practical, or explicitly plan cache invalidation and TTLs for objects that can be replaced (Cloudflare R2 architecture and caching).

Choose a storage-and-delivery approach
| Approach | What it handles | Best fit | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Object storage plus CDN | Storage and cached delivery; your pipeline handles encoding and packaging | Teams that need control over formats, storage layout, and delivery configuration | Validate packaging, access rules, range support, cache freshness, and bucket/compute placement. |
| Managed video service | Can combine upload, encoding, and adaptive-bitrate delivery | Teams that prefer an integrated media workflow over assembling individual components | Cloudflare positions Stream for upload, encoding, and adaptive bitrate delivery, while R2 provides storage and caching. Compare the service scope and cost model with your requirements; these are not equivalent products (Cloudflare Stream documentation). |
The official documentation describes distinct architectures, not a workload-independent provider winner. Compare whether your existing cloud stack favors a particular storage/CDN pairing, who will operate encoding and packaging, where viewers and compute are located, and whether the CDN supports your required range and caching behavior.
Common problems and fixes
- The video downloads as one file instead of adapting to bandwidth. A source MP4 is not automatically an adaptive stream. Encode and package into the segments and manifest format your player expects, then point the player at the manifest.
- Seeking fails or playback stalls after a seek. Inspect range responses through the CDN, not just directly from storage. Verify status, Content-Range, object length, validators, and the CDN’s documented origin requirements.
- Updates do not appear for viewers. A CDN may continue serving cached objects after an origin object changes. Use new object names for changed media or invalidate/expire cached content according to the CDN configuration.
- Live segments arrive late. Check transcoder write latency, bucket placement, and segment duration. Short segments can be more sensitive to long-tail write delays; test the live pipeline at the desired latency rather than treating a provider recommendation as a universal rule.
- Large uploads fail or restart from the beginning. Use a multipart or resumable method appropriate to the storage provider, particularly when parallelism or interruption recovery matters.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock using uploaded videos, that is a different workflow from building an object-storage origin and CDN. StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
