Start with the video bitrate your encoder sends to YouTube—not your download speed. YouTube currently recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. As a planning buffer, Livestream’s general rule of thumb is to have twice the target bitrate available as upload speed: 20 Mbps and 24 Mbps, respectively. That multiplier is third-party guidance, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
Calculate the upload speed your stream needs
- Choose the stream settings. Decide the incoming resolution, frame rate and video codec in your encoder.
- Find YouTube’s recommended bitrate for that combination. Use the recommendation—not the table’s lower minimum—as your sustained stream load. The current YouTube Help table gives these H.264 recommendations:
| Incoming video setting | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | Available upload at 2× bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 16 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 20 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
The last column is arithmetic using Livestream’s general 2× rule of thumb; those values are not YouTube specifications. YouTube’s table also lists higher-resolution recommendations: for H.264, 14 Mbps at 1440p30, 17 Mbps at 1440p60, 42 Mbps at 4K30 and 50 Mbps at 4K60. For AV1/H.265, it lists 15, 24, 30 and 35 Mbps, respectively, for those same settings. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings and match the values to the codec and settings your encoder actually uses.
- Plan for headroom. Treat the recommended bitrate as the stream’s sustained upload load. The 2× figure is a practical planning target, not a guarantee: the connection must deliver that capacity consistently, including at the time of worship.
- Account for shared traffic. Other church devices and services use the same uplink. A stream’s available capacity is lower when staff, guests or other equipment are using the connection.
- Test the real setup. Test upload from the encoder computer and connection at the church, ideally at the time the stream will run. Use representative audio and motion, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the broadcast.
A speed test is a snapshot, not proof that the connection will sustain the target continuously. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and doing a preflight with representative material. If the result is inconsistent or the uplink is shared, reduce the incoming resolution or frame rate, or arrange for more sustained upload capacity before relying on the stream.
Keep upload speed separate from monthly data use
Upload speed is a rate; data use is the amount transferred over time. For a steady stream, estimate decimal data volume with this calculation:

Bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 = approximately GB per hour
| Continuous stream bitrate | Approximate payload per hour | Approximate payload per day | Approximate payload in 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | 4.5 GB | 108 GB | 3,240 GB (3.24 TB) |
These are arithmetic estimates of stream payload, not measured church usage. Actual data accounting can differ because of protocol overhead, reconnects and the ISP’s measurement conventions. A church should check its own plan for monthly data limits separately from checking whether its upload rate can sustain the stream.

Set up the encoder and connection for reliability
Use the right transport and encoding settings
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery, constant bitrate encoding, and keyframes every 2 seconds (no more than 4 seconds apart). Confirm the encoder’s settings match the YouTube guidance and the bitrate recommendation for your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Prefer a wired, dedicated connection when available
Livestream’s provider guidance says the most reliable streaming connection is direct Ethernet to a dedicated network, and gives twice the target bitrate as a general upload-speed rule of thumb. Treat that as practical advice, not a platform guarantee. Ethernet can avoid some local Wi-Fi instability, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by the internet plan or eliminate ISP congestion.

Watch YouTube’s stream-health signals
YouTube’s Live API recognizes configuration issues such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch and missing audio. Those signals can point to an encoder or stream-configuration problem; they do not measure or guarantee the church’s internet capacity. Use them alongside an upload test and a live preflight. See YouTube Live API stream documentation.
Choose settings the connection can sustain
Higher resolution and frame rate can require more upstream bitrate. If the connection cannot consistently support the chosen setting with headroom, use a lower setting rather than planning around a best-case speed-test result. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into formats for viewers, so the church’s encoder upload requirement is not the same as the bandwidth each viewer needs to watch.

For a nonstop stream, verify the actual uplink, congestion at the relevant time, the ISP plan’s data cap and the encoder’s behavior. The general calculation cannot establish those site-specific conditions or guarantee continuous availability.

- YouTube reports low bitrate or poor stream health: Check the encoder’s outgoing bitrate and compare it with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate. Retest the actual upload path; if it cannot sustain the setting, lower the video setting or secure more capacity.
- The stream works in a test but struggles during a service: Repeat the upload test at the service time and check whether other church devices are sharing the connection. Consider a dedicated wired connection if available.
- Video is fine but audio is missing: Check that the encoder is sending supported audio, such as AAC or MP3, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Frame-rate mismatch appears: Match the encoder’s configured frame rate to the intended stream setting and review YouTube’s health messages.
- The speed test looks good but the nonstop stream uses more data than expected: Compare the approximate payload calculation with the ISP’s data accounting. Protocol overhead, reconnects and the provider’s measurement conventions can make actual totals differ.
Or let it run in the cloud
