You can use FFmpeg on a Mac mini to send a video file, camera feed, or other supported input to YouTube Live. YouTube provides the stream URL and key; FFmpeg reads your source and either relays it or encodes it for upload. A 24/7 setup depends on your particular source, FFmpeg build, settings, and internet connection, so test the full chain before relying on it.

What you need before you start

  • A Mac mini that can remain powered on, with a reliable internet connection and enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen bitrate.
  • FFmpeg installed with support for the input and any encoders you plan to use. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation explains how it reads inputs, applies filters, encodes, and writes outputs. Available encoders depend on how your build was configured; check the full FFmpeg documentation and your local build.
  • A source: for example, a video file to loop or a camera feed. The input options and whether you need to encode depend on the source.
  • A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live Control Room, where you can create or select a stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key.

A November 2021 FFmpeg mailing-list post describes a user’s attempt to send a camera feed from an M1 Mac mini using VideoToolbox and RTMP. It is a historical user report, not evidence that a particular Mac mini or setup is reliable for uninterrupted streaming. See the M1 Mac mini discussion.

Choose whether to copy or encode the source

Copy compatible media when no changes are needed

If the source is already compatible with YouTube’s ingest settings and needs no filtering or conversion, stream-copying can avoid an extra encoding step. Whether that works depends on the source’s codecs and container. FFmpeg’s documentation covers stream selection and copy options; inspect your file and test the result rather than assuming every file can be copied as-is.

Encode when the source needs conversion

Use an encoder when you need to change the codec, frame rate, resolution, or other stream properties. Check which encoders your installed build actually provides. FFmpeg documents VideoToolbox as a hardware-acceleration option, but its availability and behavior depend on the local build and workload. Do not assume a particular Mac mini model will sustain every combination of resolution, frame rate, filters, and encoding settings.

Get the YouTube stream URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
  2. Create or select a stream, then locate the encoder connection details. YouTube supplies the server URL and stream key; the key authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel. See Manage live stream settings.
  3. Keep the key private, as you would a password. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream. If it is exposed, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room.
  4. Use YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint when supported. RTMPS encrypts the connection; YouTube explains the option in Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

The exact server URL and key are account- and stream-specific. Copy them from Live Control Room rather than relying on an endpoint copied from an example.

Set output to match YouTube’s guidance

YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. For a straightforward H.264 setup, YouTube recommends these bitrate ranges:

H.264 output YouTube recommended bitrate range
1080p at 30 fps 5–14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6–17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measurements of your Mac mini or network. Choose a bitrate within the range appropriate to your output and confirm your connection can sustain it. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Its guidance states: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” At 30 fps, a two-second interval is 60 frames; at 60 fps, it is 120 frames.

Example: loop a video file to YouTube Live

This example uses a file input, H.264 encoding, AAC audio, CBR, 1080p30 output, and a two-second keyframe interval. It illustrates one possible configuration; check that your FFmpeg build includes the selected encoder and that your source has a usable audio stream. The command does not establish that a Mac mini can sustain your particular workload.

  1. In Terminal, set shell variables to the actual server URL and key shown in Live Control Room. Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, and logs.
    export YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL='paste-the-server-URL-from-Live-Control-Room-here'
    export YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY='paste-your-private-stream-key-here'
  2. Run FFmpeg with the path to your video file and the same URL/key values:
    ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "$HOME/Movies/stream.mp4"
      -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -r 30 -b:v 6M -minrate 6M -maxrate 6M -bufsize 12M -g 60
      -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
      -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

Change the input path to the file you want to play. The loop option repeats that input; -re reads it at its native playback rate instead of sending it as fast as possible. The video settings in this example target 1080p30, with a 6 Mbps CBR target and a 60-frame GOP for a two-second keyframe interval. Confirm those settings suit the actual source and the current YouTube guidance. If the source has no audio, remove the audio options; if you need to change frame size or apply filters, add the appropriate FFmpeg options and test them.

The example uses libx264; if that encoder is absent from your build, select an encoder that is available and verify its options and output. FFmpeg builds and hardware-encoding behavior vary, so do not substitute a VideoToolbox option without checking that it exists and testing the resulting stream.

Test the complete stream before leaving it unattended

Start with a short private or unlisted test. Check both the incoming feed in YouTube Live Control Room and the playback on a separate device. YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup and monitoring stream health.

  • Test the actual source file or camera, including its motion, aspect ratio, and audio.
  • Confirm that the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval match the intended output.
  • Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and check for dropped frames, unstable bitrate, audio problems, or ingest errors.
  • Run long enough to expose problems that do not appear in a brief test, and confirm that the Mac mini, FFmpeg process, and network remain stable under the intended workload.
  • Decide how you will notice a stopped process or lost connection and how you will restart it. Do not assume FFmpeg or YouTube will recover in every failure case; test your own recovery procedure.

FFmpeg mailing-list posts can show that users have attempted similar workflows, but they do not establish reliability for your setup. A separate 2021 camera-relay discussion reports a different user’s experience on Raspberry Pi systems; it is not a Mac mini performance result. See the camera relay discussion.

Plan for a long stream’s archive

A 24/7 broadcast is longer than YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the footage matters, make and verify a local recording rather than relying on YouTube’s archive alone. See Archive live streams.

Troubleshoot common failures

YouTube does not receive the stream

  • Check the URL and key: copy both again from the selected stream in Live Control Room. A wrong or reset key, missing URL component, or accidental whitespace can prevent connection.
  • Check the protocol: use the RTMPS server URL supplied by YouTube when supported, and ensure the output URL is formed from the exact server URL and key.
  • Check the output muxer and codecs: confirm FFmpeg is sending a format YouTube accepts and that the selected encoder is available in the installed build.

The stream starts but has poor health or playback

  • Bitrate fluctuates or frames drop: test a lower bitrate within YouTube’s recommended range for the chosen codec and output, and verify sustained upload capacity rather than relying on a brief speed test.
  • Video stutters or the process falls behind: reduce workload—such as resolution, frame rate, or filters—and check whether the chosen encoder is available and suitable. Re-test the full chain.
  • Audio is missing or out of sync: verify the input’s audio stream, the selected audio encoder, and playback during a test broadcast. Remove audio options only when the source genuinely has no audio.

The stream stops after running unattended

  • Inspect the Terminal output and YouTube stream health to distinguish an FFmpeg exit, source failure, network interruption, or YouTube ingest problem.
  • Test the restart and reconnection behavior rather than assuming it. Keep the Mac mini and network equipment powered and prevent routine sleep or disconnection from interrupting the stream.
  • If the stream key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the local configuration.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube stream of uploaded video without leaving the Mac mini running, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists. The steps are upload, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Learn more at StreamNeo or start the free day.

Copyright and channel policy still apply

Sending a file through FFmpeg does not grant permission to stream it. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules before going live. A looping stream also does not guarantee that content meets YouTube’s monetization or reused-content requirements; assess the channel and material against YouTube’s current policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can FFmpeg loop one video continuously?

Yes. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option repeats an input indefinitely while the process runs; it does not restart FFmpeg if the process exits.

Does a 24/7 stream guarantee a YouTube archive?

No. YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; keep a local recording if you need an archive.
