If your Raspberry Pi plays a YouTube playlist online, the playlist does not need to fit on its SD card. The card stores Raspberry Pi OS and local data, not 24 hours of streamed video. For a browser-based setup, Raspberry Pi recommends at least 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS with desktop.
Choose storage based on what the Pi keeps locally

Raspberry Pi identifies microSD as a common boot medium and says SD cards below 2 TB are supported. That compatibility limit does not mean a 2 TB card is needed for YouTube playback. Raspberry Pi documentation
Online YouTube playback does not save the playlist as a local video library
A browser-based Pi setup plays the playlist over the internet. The playlist’s total runtime therefore does not translate into an equal amount of SD-card storage. The browser may use cache space, but Raspberry Pi’s kiosk tutorial does not quantify cache use or guarantee uninterrupted YouTube playback for a particular 24/7 setup. Its tutorial uses a graphical browser and specifies a Raspberry Pi 3 or newer with at least 1 GB of RAM. Raspberry Pi kiosk tutorial
For that kind of desktop/browser arrangement, use 32 GB as the starting recommendation for the operating system and local data. Actual free space depends on the Pi model, OS release, browser, playback setup, and what else you install or retain.

Calculate capacity for videos stored on the Pi
For a rough estimate, use:
Decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mb/s × duration in hours × 0.45
For example, 24 hours at 1 Mb/s is about 10.8 GB; 24 hours at 5 Mb/s is about 54 GB. These are arithmetic examples, not estimates of a particular YouTube stream or file. Use the actual files’ bitrate and runtime where available, then add storage for the operating system, other local data, and room for updates. The reviewed guidance does not specify a universal free-space buffer.

- Only stream online: choose storage for the OS and your other local use; do not add the playlist’s full duration as if it were stored video.
- Keep video files locally: add the size of the files you plan to retain, using their actual sizes or the estimate above.
- Mix local files and online playback: combine the OS baseline with retained file sizes and leave practical working space.
Do not confuse YouTube offline downloads with a Pi-ready playlist
YouTube’s official offline features depend on eligibility, account, geography, device or browser, and video availability. They do not establish a general method for saving any arbitrary playlist as ordinary local video files for a Raspberry Pi. Common storage questions and pitfalls
- Will 24 hours of streamed playback fill the card? The playlist itself is streamed, not stored as a 24-hour local video. The reviewed official sources do not give a fixed cache-size figure for a Pi browser.
- Is 8 GB enough for a browser kiosk? Eight gigabytes is Raspberry Pi’s minimum for OS Lite, not a guarantee for every browser-based setup. Desktop OS is the more relevant documented starting point for a graphical browser, at 32 GB minimum.
- Should I buy 64 GB just for a YouTube loop? The playlist runtime alone does not require it. Decide based on the OS edition and any video or other files you will retain locally.
- Can I rely on YouTube downloads as local files? No general Pi-compatible workflow for arbitrary playlist downloads is established by YouTube’s offline-help pages; availability is conditional.
