Windows Task Scheduler can start your streaming encoder automatically when Windows boots or when you sign in. It does not make a stream truly nonstop: the PC, network, encoder, YouTube connection, and stream key still need to work, and Task Scheduler alone does not guarantee recovery after a failure.
To set it up safely, first create and test the YouTube stream and encoder manually, then make a scheduled task that launches the same tested encoder configuration. Choose a startup trigger if the encoder can run at boot; choose a logon trigger if it needs your interactive user session.
What Task Scheduler can—and cannot—do
Task Scheduler runs a program in response to a trigger. Microsoft documents both a system-start trigger and a user-logon trigger, but a scheduled launch is not a continuous-service guarantee. It does not by itself restore power, reconnect a failed internet connection, repair an invalid stream key, restart an encoder after every crash, or ensure YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
The practical goal is to have Windows start the encoder with a configuration you have already tested. You must still plan for interruptions and verify that the stream is live after launch.

Prepare the YouTube stream and encoder first
Enable live streaming for the channel
Confirm that live streaming is enabled on your YouTube channel. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until the planned start time to enable it. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Get the stream URL and key
In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. Enter both in the encoder’s streaming settings, following the encoder’s own instructions. YouTube explains that the stream key identifies the feed it should accept. Treat it as a secret: YouTube Help says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not expose a real key in a script, screenshot, or log. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. See Manage live stream settings.

Test the encoder manually
Start the encoder yourself with the exact profile, media, and YouTube destination you intend to use. Confirm that the encoder connects and YouTube Studio receives the feed before automating anything. Installing an encoder does not configure YouTube automatically, and there is no universal OBS command line or unattended setting that applies to every encoder and Windows setup. Use the encoder’s current documentation for executable arguments and configuration.
Create a scheduled task in Task Scheduler
Choose startup or logon
- At startup: Select this when the encoder can run as Windows starts, without depending on a signed-in desktop session.
- At logon: Select this when the encoder needs an interactive session, visible desktop, or user-loaded profile. Test using the same Windows account and session conditions you expect during operation.
Microsoft identifies these trigger types as ONSTART and ONLOGON. The right choice depends on how the particular encoder runs; the available documentation does not establish one universal setting. See Microsoft’s schtasks create reference and Task Scheduler triggers.

Build the task with the tested encoder action
- Open Task Scheduler and create a task with a name that makes its purpose clear.
- Add either an At startup trigger or an At log on trigger, matching the encoder’s session requirements.
- Add an action to start the encoder’s actual executable. Set any required arguments and working directory according to the encoder’s documented configuration. Do not copy a generic OBS path or untested command line: executable locations and launch options vary.
- Configure the task to run under the Windows account and conditions you intend to use, then save it.
Microsoft’s command-line example for a startup-triggered program is schtasks /create /tn MyApp /tr c:appsmyapp.exe /sc onstart. This illustrates syntax only; replace the example executable with your encoder’s correct path and add only arguments you have tested.
Run the task and verify the result
- In Task Scheduler, select the task and use its run function.
- Check that the encoder opens or starts as expected, loads the intended media and configuration, and connects to YouTube.
- Confirm in YouTube Studio that the feed is arriving. A task that reports a launch is not proof that YouTube is receiving a usable stream.
- Test the actual trigger you plan to use—restart Windows for startup, or sign out and back in for logon—and verify the same results.
Plan for long streams, security, and interruptions
YouTube’s automatic archive threshold
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a continuous stream longer than 12 hours becoming one complete automatic archive. If you need complete recordings, plan stream segments or make a separate local recording and verify it independently.

What scheduled launch does not recover
A trigger starts the encoder when its configured event occurs; it does not establish a complete monitoring or recovery system. Power loss, Windows shutdown, network outages, encoder crashes, a bad key, or a YouTube-side interruption can still stop the stream. Test reconnect behavior using your encoder’s supported settings, and arrange separate monitoring or recovery if uninterrupted operation is important.
Protect the key and media rights
Keep the stream key private and reset it if exposed. Also make sure the video and audio you stream are cleared for live use. A scheduled task does not change YouTube’s copyright rules or prevent a rights claim or interruption.

Alternatives for keeping a YouTube stream running
Software or standalone hardware encoder
YouTube lists software and hardware encoder options and notes that the listed products are not made by YouTube. A standalone hardware encoder is a different operating approach from software launched on a Windows PC; check the specific product’s stated capabilities, including whether it explicitly supports continuous streaming. YouTube’s list is not an independent performance comparison.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is #1 for a managed way to keep a YouTube stream running: it loops uploaded video from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free with no card. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from its cloud service.
The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting a task that does not start or stream
- Nothing launches at boot: Check that the task uses an ONSTART-equivalent trigger and that its action points to the actual encoder executable. Test the task manually, then test with a Windows restart.
- The task runs but the encoder does not connect: Recheck the stream URL and key in the encoder, confirm the channel’s live-streaming access is enabled, and test the encoder manually. If the key was reset, update the encoder configuration.
- The encoder only works after sign-in: It may depend on an interactive desktop or user profile. Try a logon trigger and test under the intended account rather than assuming it can run at startup without a session.
- YouTube receives no feed even though the task launched: A successful program launch does not confirm a successful stream. Check the encoder’s connection status and YouTube Studio’s incoming feed, then troubleshoot the encoder’s configuration or network separately.
- The stream stops after an outage or crash: Task Scheduler’s trigger alone does not guarantee recovery from these failures. Check the encoder’s documented reconnect options and use a separately tested monitoring or recovery approach if needed.
- A long stream is missing from the archive in full: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed complete archive for longer continuous streams. Use planned segments or a separate recording when completeness matters.
