You can stream a prerecorded video to YouTube Live without OBS by running a software encoder on a cloud VM in an Indian region and sending its output to YouTube over RTMPS. You will still need an encoder; the difference is that it runs remotely rather than on your computer. YouTube connects the encoder to your broadcast using an ingestion server URL and a private stream key.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus a broadcast created or scheduled in YouTube Live Control Room.
- A cloud VM in the Indian region you select, with your video file available on it and enough resources to encode it.
- A software encoder that can read the video and audio and send a compatible stream to YouTube.
- Outbound network access from the VM to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. For RTMPS, the connection uses port 443.
OBS is optional, not a requirement. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes connecting an encoder with a server URL and stream key; the encoder can run on a remote VM. The fact that the VM is in India determines where your encoder runs, not how YouTube’s ingest configuration works. Verify the provider’s available regions, outbound rules, network route, and sustained throughput yourself before committing to a particular setup. The cited documentation does not verify any specific cloud provider’s Indian region.
Set up the broadcast and connect the encoder
- Enable live streaming and create the broadcast. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream. Check that the channel is eligible and live streaming is enabled before preparing the VM.
- Place the video on the VM. Upload or otherwise transfer the source file, and confirm it is readable and has the audio and video you intend to broadcast.
- Choose RTMPS and copy the YouTube connection details. Use the current server URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. Configure them in the encoder’s protected settings. Keep the key private: it authorizes publishing to your stream. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide explains the secure connection requirements.
- Check outbound connectivity. RTMPS uses port 443 and requires the correct hostname for TLS server-name indication (SNI). Do not assume a VM’s firewall or provider network permits the connection; verify the actual outbound path to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint.
- Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview. Wait for the preview and stream-health status in Live Control Room. Confirm both picture and sound before starting the public broadcast.
- Start and monitor the broadcast. Start the broadcast in Live Control Room when the feed is ready. Watch stream health and check the picture and audio during transmission.
- End the stream deliberately. Stop the encoder and end the broadcast in Live Control Room when finished. Confirm the broadcast has ended rather than leaving a live session open unintentionally.
This workflow describes the connection and operational sequence, not a vendor-specific VM command. Exact encoder commands and VM sizes depend on the software, source media, provider, and intended output; verify those choices for your implementation rather than copying untested flags.
Choose RTMPS for a standard feed; consider HLS for specific needs
RTMPS: the practical default
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary streams. It carries RTMP over SSL/TLS, with the correct endpoint, application path, port 443 connection, and server hostname for SNI authentication. A wrong URL, port, or TLS configuration can cause certificate or timeout errors. YouTube describes RTMPS as a good choice for most ordinary user content, particularly when low latency matters. See its RTMPS documentation.

HLS: evaluate when its format support matters
HLS may suit a workflow that needs supported HEVC or HDR options, but it is not a universal upgrade. YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation requires muxed audio and video in M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOP, and playlist and segment uploads over HTTPS. Because it is segment based, HLS usually has higher latency than RTMP and WebRTC; YouTube’s protocol comparison says it is not suitable for ultra-low-latency streaming. For a typical prerecorded feed, start by evaluating RTMPS unless a specific HLS capability justifies the extra implementation work and latency.
Match YouTube’s encoder settings and test the source
Use the current YouTube encoder settings for your selected resolution and codec; supported details can change. YouTube’s published recommendations include constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), stereo audio at 44.1 kHz, and 128-kbps stereo audio. For SDR, it lists Rec. 709.

- Test a representative part of the video before relying on the stream, including motion similar to the full recording.
- Listen for missing, distorted, or out-of-sync audio, and check that the preview’s image is stable.
- Keep the encoder settings aligned with the chosen resolution and codec instead of assuming one preset fits every file.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health report during the broadcast, not just whether the encoder process remains running.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Its Live Streaming API documentation identifies health issues such as low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio. In addition to YouTube’s report, it is prudent to monitor the encoder process, VM CPU and memory, outbound network stability, and available disk space; these are operational checks, not YouTube requirements.
India-specific network checks
Indian hosting does not remove the need to verify a reliable route from the VM to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Test sustained throughput and confirm outbound access from the actual provider region and VM configuration you plan to use.

The National Informatics Centre’s webcast service checklist asks for an encoder, static public IP, outbound RTMP port 1935 access, and dedicated bandwidth of 2–4 Mbps per stream. Those are requirements in the NIC webcast context, not universal YouTube Live requirements or a bitrate recommendation for this setup. For RTMPS to YouTube, follow YouTube’s endpoint and port requirements instead.
Troubleshoot common connection and stream problems
| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| No connection or a timeout | Confirm the server URL, application path, port, provider outbound rules, and route to the selected ingest endpoint. | Use the current RTMPS details for the broadcast and permit the required outbound port 443 connection. Test from the VM rather than assuming the provider allows it. |
| TLS or certificate error | Check that the connection uses RTMPS and the correct server hostname for SNI. | Correct the endpoint and TLS/SNI configuration using YouTube’s RTMPS requirements; do not switch to an unverified URL. |
| YouTube reports low video bitrate | Review the encoder’s output and the VM’s sustained outbound network performance. | Check the encoder configuration against YouTube’s settings for the selected resolution and codec, then test the route and health report again. |
| Frame-rate mismatch | Compare the source and encoder output with the chosen stream settings and YouTube’s health report. | Align the output configuration with the intended frame rate and retest representative video motion. |
| Missing audio | Check that the source has an audio track, the encoder includes it, and YouTube’s preview receives it. | Correct the audio input or encoding configuration, then verify audible playback before relying on the live feed. |
| Stream key rejected or wrong broadcast receives the feed | Confirm the key belongs to the intended broadcast and has been copied accurately. | Use the current URL and key displayed for that broadcast. Store the key securely and replace it if it has been exposed. |
Copyright and YouTube policy checks for prerecorded video
A video being prerecorded does not make it safe to broadcast. Before streaming, make sure you have the rights needed for every included element—such as music, gameplay footage, images, and other people’s recordings—and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies. A stream key only authorizes a connection; it does not grant rights to the content or guarantee that a stream may remain live. Review the current copyright safety checklist before broadcasting.

If the goal is ongoing or repeated prerecorded programming, distinguish technical continuity from policy and channel eligibility: an encoder can send a feed, but that alone does not establish compliance or monetization eligibility. Check YouTube’s current rules for your channel and content rather than assuming that a continuous or looped feed qualifies.
