How to Set Up a Nonstop YouTube Stream with OBS on a Windows Cloud PC

A practical guide to running OBS for a continuous YouTube stream on a Windows cloud PC, from channel eligibility and stream keys to bitrate, testing, and reconnection.

You can keep OBS sending a continuous YouTube stream from a Windows cloud PC by preparing the channel and machine, configuring an event and stream key, choosing settings the instance can sustain, and testing recovery before relying on it. “Nonstop” is an operating goal, not an uptime guarantee: neither OBS nor an unspecified cloud PC provider can prevent every interruption.

1. Make sure your YouTube channel can go live

Check eligibility before setting up the cloud PC. YouTube requires a verified channel, live streaming enabled, and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until broadcast day. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips for computers.

2. Choose and prepare a Windows cloud PC

OBS lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 support and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic Windows requirements. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee that a particular machine can encode and stream successfully. Performance depends on the actual instance, encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and network conditions. OBS’s system requirements page makes this distinction.

Before paying for or configuring an instance, confirm with its provider what Windows version, GPU or hardware encoding support, sustained outbound bandwidth, persistent storage, reboot behavior, and remote-session audio devices are available. Those details vary by provider and plan; there is no single cloud-PC performance or availability figure that applies to all instances.

3. Install OBS and build the stream scene

  1. Install OBS Studio on the cloud PC, then launch it. If the Auto-Configuration Wizard does not appear automatically, open Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard. Choose the option for streaming and follow the prompts; OBS uses intended use, computer resources, and network conditions to suggest a starting configuration.
  2. Add the content source. In the Sources panel, use the plus button to add the source or sources needed for your broadcast. For prerecorded video, verify that the media source behaves as intended in the remote session, including whether it loops and whether the file remains accessible after a restart.
  3. Check audio. Watch the audio meters while the video plays. Select the intended desktop or microphone devices manually if needed. A remote Windows session may expose different devices from a local PC, so confirm what the chosen provider makes available rather than assuming a microphone or desktop-audio device exists.
  4. Preview the scene. Check framing, playback, overlays, and transitions before connecting to YouTube. Keep the scene simple if the instance struggles to render or encode it.

OBS’s Quick Start Guide explains the wizard, sources, audio, and test-stream workflow.

4. Create a YouTube live event and connect OBS

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream or select the event you intend to use. If the stream is scheduled, confirm the correct event is selected.
  2. In the event’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the event’s stream URL and key. If using a service option that does not populate the server automatically, use the URL YouTube supplies.
  4. Save the settings and return to the main OBS window. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.

YouTube’s live-stream settings guide covers the stream URL, key, and event controls. Choose latency, DVR, and auto-start or auto-stop settings according to the broadcast: latency affects how quickly viewers see the stream, DVR determines whether viewers can rewind, and auto-start/stop determines whether encoder actions control event start and stop. Verify these options on the event before going live.

5. Set a quality the cloud PC can sustain

Use YouTube’s published H.264 settings as a starting point, not a promise that a particular cloud instance will handle them. The figures below are YouTube’s current Help-page values; no publication year is stated there.

Output Minimum H.264 bitrate Recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

For a first continuous broadcast, start conservatively: choose a resolution and frame rate the instance can encode consistently, then increase only after testing. YouTube lists separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC, so do not apply the H.264 figures to those codecs. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the applicable codec guidance.

  • Rate control: Use CBR as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Protocol: Use RTMPS where supported.
  • Network headroom: YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload headroom. If configuring a backup stream, account for primary bitrate, backup bitrate, and headroom together against available upload capacity.

These recommendations do not establish the cloud PC’s sustained encoding or network capacity. Test the actual instance at the chosen settings and watch YouTube’s stream health. YouTube’s streaming tips cover network reliability and headroom.

6. Test the event before depending on it

  1. Start with a short private or unlisted test event if appropriate, rather than making the first attempt your actual broadcast.
  2. Use motion and audio similar to the intended content. A static screen may not reveal the same encoding load as gameplay or other moving video.
  3. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health status. Confirm the event appears on the intended channel or watch page and can be opened on a phone.
  4. If OBS is also recording an archive, confirm that the file is being written and can be opened. Do not assume that an active stream automatically means a usable local recording.
  5. Repeat relevant checks periodically during a long-running broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring but does not prescribe a monitoring cadence for a 24/7 stream; choose an interval that fits the importance of the stream and your ability to respond.

7. Configure reconnection and plan for failure

OBS includes automatic reconnect controls in its streaming settings. They can help OBS retry after a dropped connection, but reconnect is a recovery feature, not a guarantee that the broadcast will remain uninterrupted or resume in every failure mode. For more on the setting, see the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

If the stream drops frames or disconnects, OBS identifies an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain as possible causes. Reduce bitrate if necessary, investigate the network path, and use a wired connection where that is relevant and under your control. With a cloud PC, the provider controls much of the network path, so contact its support if the instance’s outbound connection is unstable. OBS documents these steps in its stream connection troubleshooting guide.

  • After a reconnect, check OBS’s connection status and the YouTube preview and stream health; do not assume viewers see a healthy feed simply because OBS has retried.
  • If the event is no longer live, inspect YouTube’s event controls and restart the encoder or event as appropriate.
  • If the cloud PC rebooted or disconnected from the remote session, reconnect and verify that OBS, the media file, scene, and stream settings persisted before restarting.
  • If the problem repeats, lower output demands and run another test before restoring the intended quality.
