To keep a YouTube podcast’s episode order consistent, set its Default Video Order in YouTube Studio: open Content → Podcasts, edit the podcast, choose the order, and save. Choose newest to oldest for episodes that stand alone; choose oldest to newest for a story listeners should follow from the beginning.
This guide covers a podcast playlist that you update with new episodes. YouTube’s official help describes podcasts as playlists of episode videos; it does not establish “live playlist” as a feature or explain whether these settings control a playlist during an active livestream.
Choose the order that fits the show
Decide how listeners should enter the series before changing the setting. YouTube’s podcast guidance recommends different orders for episodic and serial shows.

The recommendation is about the listening experience, not which episode was uploaded most recently. YouTube’s guidance for Shows describes non-serial episodes as newest to oldest and serial episodes as oldest to newest.

Set the podcast’s default video order
- Decide whether the show is episodic or serial and note the display order you want.
- In YouTube Studio, open Content → Podcasts.
- Open the podcast for editing.
- Choose the intended option under Default Video Order.
- Save, then check the displayed episode sequence against your intended order.
YouTube describes a podcast show as a playlist and its episodes as videos. The podcast playlist should contain full-length episodes in the order viewers should consume them. An MP3 file by itself cannot be a YouTube podcast episode; an episode is represented by a video.
Keep episode numbers and seasons aligned
If you use YouTube’s Show features, check season and episode numbers after changing the playlist order. YouTube says manually specified playlist order determines assigned episode numbers. Without manual ordering, it assigns numbers by publication date from oldest to newest.

Changing or deleting an episode’s number or season can automatically update numbers on other episodes. Review the full sequence after edits rather than assuming only the item you changed is affected.
When to use a regular playlist instead
If the collection is not a podcast, edit the saved playlist in YouTube Studio. Playlist creation on a computer offers a video arrangement choice, and the saved playlist can be reordered by dragging videos up or down.

Dragging items in the playlist panel on a watch page is a temporary reorder. It does not replace editing the saved playlist order, so use the Studio editing workflow when you want the channel’s intended sequence to persist.
Keep the podcast playlist focused
- Use the podcast playlist for full-length episodes.
- Keep separate season or clips playlists distinct rather than assigning them podcast features.
- Shorts made to support a podcast do not appear in YouTube Music, according to YouTube’s podcast setup guidance.
Check the sequence as the show grows
When adding episodes in batches, revisit the saved order and confirm the new videos appear where you intend. Treat this as an editorial check: the available guidance does not establish that every later upload will automatically preserve a particular order in every configuration.
