If it still does not persist, check the account and setting-specific limits below; YouTube does not document one universal cause or a guaranteed update delay.
Change the playlist’s visibility in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio using the account that owns the playlist.
- Select Content, then Playlists.
- Find the playlist and open Details.
- Under Visibility, choose Public, Private, or Unlisted.
- Click Save.
- Reopen the playlist details and check the selected Visibility option. This is a practical confirmation step, not a separate troubleshooting procedure prescribed by YouTube.
YouTube also documents editing in its regular interface. On desktop, open the You tab, choose Playlists, open the full playlist, and select the privacy option below its title. On Android, tap your profile picture, go to Playlists and View all, select the playlist, tap Edit, choose its privacy setting, and tap Save. Labels and paths can vary by platform and interface version. See YouTube’s playlist privacy instructions.
Check what the selected privacy setting actually does
A playlist can appear unchanged when it is behaving as the chosen setting intends. YouTube’s documented distinctions are:

For example, an unlisted playlist is meant to be reached by link, not found through normal search. A public playlist may still be accessible by link even if you do not immediately see it in the place you expected. Check the selected setting against YouTube’s privacy-setting descriptions before making another edit.

Work through the likely account or setting mix-ups
Make sure you own the playlist
YouTube says playlist owners can change a playlist’s privacy. Confirm that the account shown in Studio is the one that owns the playlist; being able to view or share a playlist does not by itself establish that you can edit its visibility.
Check whether you are changing playlist visibility or channel privacy
A playlist’s Visibility control is separate from your channel’s Privacy setting for saved playlists and activity. If your concern is that saved playlists or likes appear on your channel, change the channel Privacy controls instead of editing the visibility of a playlist you own. YouTube explains these separately in its playlist privacy guide and channel privacy settings.

Check for a supervised account
YouTube warns that playlist privacy features may not be available for supervised accounts. If the visibility control is missing or unavailable, account supervision may explain why you cannot make the change.
Separate editing an existing playlist from creating a new one
YouTube documents a daily limit on how many public playlists a channel can create across YouTube, YouTube Music, and the YouTube API; access to advanced features can increase that limit. This concerns creating public playlists. YouTube’s help material does not say that the limit prevents changing the privacy of an existing playlist, so it is not an established explanation for an edit that will not save.

Consider a legacy unlisted playlist only if its history fits
YouTube says it made unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017 private beginning July 23, 2021, unless the creator opted out, and notes that some older unlisted playlists were created in the old system. This historical change may explain an unexpected state for legacy content; it is not evidence of a general current saving problem. Details are in YouTube’s unlisted-content update information.
If the playlist still will not save
- Identify whether you are editing the playlist itself or changing who can see saved playlists and activity on your channel.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the playlist owner’s account.
- Try the documented Studio route: Content > Playlists > Details > Visibility, then click Save.
- Reopen Details and inspect which Visibility option is selected.
- If the control is unavailable, check whether the account is supervised. If you are creating a new public playlist rather than editing an existing one, consider YouTube’s documented daily creation limit.
- Check whether the playlist’s actual behavior matches its selected setting: public can be discoverable, unlisted requires a link, and private is restricted.
If the selected setting still does not persist after those checks, YouTube’s current help material does not identify a universal cause or promise a particular propagation interval. Do not assume that waiting, clearing a cache, or switching browsers will fix it. Consult YouTube Help or current Creator support channels, and describe exactly what happens after you click Save.
