You first schedule a YouTube Live event, then connect an encoder or hosted playback service that sends the sermon playlist to that event. For a church that needs the feed to continue when no one is at the building, a cloud service can play uploaded videos without leaving a local computer on.
Decide what “continuous” means for your church
A scheduled service and a 24/7 channel are different jobs. For one service, schedule an event, start the prerecorded feed, and end the broadcast after the closing slate. For a continuous channel, decide whether you mean one long-running live event or a sequence of separate scheduled broadcasts. YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer, uninterrupted feed will be archived as one complete video. Plan how the stream, archive, and any restart or handoff will work. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance explains scheduling and starting an encoder-based event.
Choose how the sermons will play
YouTube provides the event and stream destination; a separate encoder or service plays the media and sends it to YouTube. Choose based on who will operate it, whether the computer and internet connection can remain on, and how the system handles playlist looping, interruptions, and reconnection.

Prepare and check the sermon playlist
Before scheduling, put the recordings in the intended order in the playback tool you chose. YouTube Studio does not supply a loop setting for a scheduled event; looping and sequential playback must be configured in the encoder or hosted service.

- Play every file through once and confirm the picture, sound, and ending are correct.
- Check speaking and worship audio levels, transitions, title cards, and closing slate. Avoid an abrupt cut or silence if the playlist is intended to repeat.
- Prepare captions where available and verify that any title, description, thumbnail, and schedule accurately describe a replay rather than a live-from-camera service.
- Keep a record of the exact playlist order and who is responsible for checking the stream.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- Enable live streaming if needed. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to activate. Do not leave this until shortly before a service. YouTube Help covers eligibility and setup.
- Open the scheduling workflow. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream.
- Create the event. Start a new stream or reuse settings. Enter the title, description, thumbnail, date and time, visibility, and audience details. Check the time zone and whether the event should be public, unlisted, or private.
- Share the event page. Give the congregation the scheduled watch-page URL so people can find the event and set reminders.
- Review start behavior. Stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop options. Check the settings on this event instead of assuming reused settings are appropriate; whether you need to press Go live depends on the event configuration.
Connect the playlist to the event and test it
- In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event.
- Enter those details in your encoder or hosted service. Treat the stream key as a password: anyone with it may be able to send content to your channel. If you reset the key, update the playback system with the replacement.
- Start the playlist early enough to check the incoming preview. Confirm that both video and audio are arriving, the right event is selected, and the playback begins at the expected point.
- When the event is ready, start the broadcast in Live Control Room if its configuration requires a manual start. YouTube’s documented flow is to wait for the incoming preview and then start the scheduled event.
- For a one-time service, monitor through the final sermon and closing slate, then end the stream deliberately. For an ongoing feed, verify how the selected tool behaves at the end of the playlist, during a network interruption, and after a restart.
Clear rights for every part of the replay
The church is responsible for having the rights needed to livestream the content. Check the sermon recording, pastor and guest contributions, worship performances, backing tracks, lyrics, photographs, video clips, and graphics. Confirm that permissions cover the intended YouTube livestream and any archived replay, including territory and use conditions. YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility for necessary rights, including music licensing, on the content provider.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. A matched stream may be replaced with a placeholder, interrupted, or terminated if the material continues. A license does not necessarily prevent a live interruption: YouTube says the rights holder may need to add the church’s channel to its Content ID allowlist. An archived stream can also receive a Content ID claim after the live broadcast ends. Ask the rights administrator to confirm the exact license, covered use, territory, and channel allowlisting where applicable; do not assume a worship or performance license automatically clears YouTube Content ID.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The event is scheduled but nothing is playing: Scheduling creates the watch page; it does not transmit the playlist. Start the encoder or hosted playback system and confirm it is sending to the event’s stream URL and key.
- YouTube has no incoming preview: Check that the encoder is running, the correct stream key and URL are entered, and the computer or service has a working internet connection. If the key was reset, replace the old key in the encoder.
- Preview appears, but viewers cannot watch: Check the scheduled event’s start configuration and press Go live in Live Control Room if manual start is required. Verify the event’s time, visibility, and selected stream.
- The playlist stops after one pass: Looping is controlled by the playback tool, not the scheduled YouTube event. Enable looping in the chosen service or set up an explicitly managed restart, then test the end-of-playlist behavior.
- The live feed is interrupted during worship music: Review the matched material and rights. Ask the relevant rights holder about channel allowlisting and verify that the license covers livestream and archive use.
- A continuous archive is incomplete or split: YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. For a longer-running feed, establish an archive plan rather than relying on one event to create a complete recording.
