Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo put a name, topic, or social handle on the livestream image, add a text source or overlay in your streaming encoder, position it in the scene, and preview it before going live. YouTube video tags and Shopping product tags are different: they affect metadata or shopping features, not the words drawn over your video.
First, decide what you mean by “stream labels”
- On-screen label: Text viewers see in the video, such as your player name, game title, or social handle. Add this in your encoder or an overlay tool.
- YouTube video tags: Descriptive keywords entered in stream settings. They are metadata, not visible text; YouTube says tags generally play only a minimal role in discovery, except for common misspellings. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Shopping product tag: A product viewers may be able to shop from a live stream, subject to YouTube Shopping eligibility and setup. It is not a text overlay. Read YouTube’s product-tagging instructions.
Add informational text in your encoder
- Choose the wording and where it should appear. Keep it short enough to read at your stream’s output size.
- In your encoder, add a text source or a supported overlay source to the scene you plan to broadcast.
- Position and size the label so it remains legible without covering important gameplay, faces, captions, or other on-screen information.
- Preview the scene at the intended stream resolution and check it on a smaller display if possible. Confirm that the text is readable and not clipped before you go live.
The exact menu names differ across encoders and versions, so use the text-source or overlay controls in your software rather than assuming one universal click path. You do not need a particular camera, microphone, or headset just to add a label.
Use YouTube’s browser-source overlay for its break slate
YouTube’s documented browser-source instructions apply to its specific “Take a Break” break overlay in Live Control Room. They are not a general YouTube label generator. For that feature:
- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the relevant overlay settings and copy the overlay URL.
- In your encoder, add a browser source and paste the URL.
- Set the browser source’s width and height to match your stream resolution.
- Enable “Shutdown source when not visible.”
- Test the break overlay in the scene before broadcasting.
Browser-source support and behavior can vary by encoder. YouTube’s instructions note that not all encoders support browser sources in the same way. See YouTube’s overlay setup instructions.

Choose between a basic text source and a packaged overlay tool
| Approach | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Text source in your current encoder | A fixed name, topic, or handle with straightforward placement. | Editing controls, readability, and whether the source appears in the scene you are broadcasting. |
| Packaged streaming or overlay tool | More elaborate scenes or labels that may update dynamically. | Current feature availability, encoder compatibility, setup complexity, customization, and whether the feature is included in your current plan. |
YouTube’s streaming-tools directory lists Streamlabs and describes support for on-stream notification popups and adding labels to scenes. Treat it as one possible software route, not a guarantee about current menus, plan terms, or availability. Check YouTube’s tools directory.
