How to Use OBS Replay Buffer for a Church’s Prerecorded YouTube Stream

Replay Buffer saves recent OBS output; it does not play or schedule a prerecorded service. Learn both setups, the rehearsal checks, and common fixes.

OBS Replay Buffer and a prerecorded YouTube service do different jobs: Replay Buffer temporarily keeps recent OBS output so you can save a short clip after the fact; it does not play, schedule, or start the service. To broadcast a prerecorded service as a scheduled YouTube live event, send the prepared video through OBS to the event, check YouTube’s preview, then go live. Set up and test both workflows separately.

What Replay Buffer does—and what it does not do

Replay Buffer retains a rolling portion of OBS’s recent output. When you trigger Save Replay Buffer, OBS writes that recent segment to a file. You must enable and start the buffer before the footage you want to save occurs; it cannot recover footage from before it was running. OBS’s Overview Guide documents enabling the buffer in Output settings and assigning its save hotkey.

It is not the same as Start Recording, which begins a continuous recording, and it is not a playout system for your prerecorded program. Use Replay Buffer for short, retrospective clips; use ordinary recording when you need a continuous local file. OBS forum guidance also distinguishes these two outputs.

Set up and test Replay Buffer

  1. Choose the output settings. In OBS, open Settings → Output, enable Replay Buffer, choose a replay duration, and set a recording path you can locate after the service. A longer window retains more material and places greater demands on system resources. Test the duration on the church’s actual computer instead of assuming one setting suits every system.
  2. Assign a save hotkey. Open Settings → Hotkeys and assign an easy-to-remember combination to Save Replay Buffer. Pick one unlikely to be pressed accidentally during worship or media playback. OBS also lists start- and stop-buffer actions among its hotkey options.
  3. Start the buffer before the moment you may need. Start Replay Buffer from the OBS controls. Saving a replay only captures material retained since the buffer was started. OBS documents --startreplaybuffer as a launch parameter for automatic startup; test it with the church’s actual shortcut or launch method before relying on it.
  4. Save a test clip and inspect it. Trigger the hotkey, then check that the file appears in the chosen folder and contains usable picture and audio. If the operator needs a full continuous recording, use Start Recording separately.

Send a prerecorded service to a scheduled YouTube live event

This is a separate workflow from Replay Buffer. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting an encoder such as OBS to a scheduled event, inspecting its preview, and going live; they do not establish one universal OBS media-source setup for unattended playback or looping.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Confirm channel access early. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so verify access well before the service.
  2. Create or select the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and schedule an event or select the one already scheduled. Scheduling lets viewers receive reminders and gives you a chance to check the event details before the service.
  3. Prepare the OBS scene and source. Load the prerecorded program in the scene intended for the service. Confirm that the video is visible and that its audio reaches the stream mix. Rehearse how the file starts and ends, whether it needs manual restarting, and whether looping behaves as intended in your particular OBS setup.
  4. Connect OBS to the correct event. Copy that event’s stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into OBS’s stream settings. Verify you selected the intended event before starting the OBS feed; a feed going to the wrong event will not fix itself through Replay Buffer.
  5. Check YouTube’s preview before going live. Start streaming from OBS, wait for the scheduled event’s preview, and check the picture, sound, title and date, privacy setting, and event selection. When ready, click Go live in Live Control Room.
  6. End the event deliberately. At the end of the service, end the event in Live Control Room and stop OBS from sending the feed, following YouTube’s encoder workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Rehearse the full path before the service

  • Run a private or unlisted rehearsal using the intended OBS scene, source, stream key, event, and audio routing. Do not assume a media source will start or loop unattended as expected.
  • Test Replay Buffer independently: start it, capture a clip, and confirm the file and sound. A replay-save hotkey does not substitute for starting the buffer.
  • Check the event preview and verify that the correct scheduled event is selected before clicking Go live.
  • If you keep distinct rehearsal and service output configurations, OBS Profiles can store most output settings and can be switched between. Profiles do not store Scenes; pair them with the appropriate Scene Collection.
  • For a separate ordinary recording, OBS recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop will not corrupt the entire file, and documents a built-in remux process to MP4. That recommendation concerns ordinary recordings; it does not make a Replay Buffer clip a backup of a failed live stream.

Protect the service’s music and other material

YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If YouTube identifies third-party content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the material remains, the live stream may be interrupted or terminated. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner needs to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived live streams can also receive Content ID claims after the event ends.

Before broadcasting, confirm that the church has the necessary rights for music, video, and other third-party material in the prerecorded program. Where applicable, coordinate with the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting. A rehearsal can confirm the technical path, but it does not establish that the program’s material is cleared.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Save Replay Buffer produces no clip The buffer was not enabled or started, or the save hotkey was not assigned to the intended action. Check Settings → Output, start Replay Buffer, and verify Settings → Hotkeys assigns Save Replay Buffer. Test again and inspect the configured recording folder.
The clip misses the moment you wanted The buffer was started too late, or its chosen duration did not retain enough recent output. Start the buffer before the relevant part and test a longer window if needed, accounting for the computer’s resources.
The YouTube preview has no video or audio The wrong scene or source may be selected, or the program’s sound may not reach the stream mix. Check the active OBS scene, source visibility, audio routing, and the event preview during rehearsal.
The prerecorded program does not start or loop as expected Media-source behavior depends on the OBS setup; there is no universal unattended-playback configuration established by the encoder workflow. Rehearse the exact scene and file through the scheduled-event path, including the beginning, ending, restart, and any loop behavior required.
The event is not ready when the service is due Live streaming may not yet be enabled for the channel. Check verification and live-stream access in advance; first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours.
The stream is interrupted despite having music permission YouTube may identify third-party material and interrupt the live stream; the rights owner may need to allowlist the channel in Content ID. Confirm rights and coordinate allowlisting with the rights owner where applicable. Review any archived stream for later claims.

Optional: use a physical hotkey controller

A programmable controller such as a Stream Deck can map a button to an OBS hotkey, which may be convenient at a volunteer desk. It is optional: an OBS keyboard hotkey is enough to save a replay. Community instructions for particular controllers and software can become outdated, so verify the mapping with the church’s current setup before using it during a service.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving a church computer on, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home or at the church; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera livestream service. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
