The VPS can keep the encoder running without a church computer staying on, but you remain responsible for setup, monitoring, transfer costs, rights, and recovery if something stops.
Before you start: channel, recordings, and rights
- Check YouTube eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and says streamers must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your intended launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Choose the programming. Decide whether the channel will repeat one sermon, rotate a set of recordings, or use scheduled blocks. Prepare and test the files before going live, and retain local copies.
- Confirm permissions. Your church must have the necessary rights for the live content and any archived version, including music licenses. YouTube’s terms place that responsibility on the provider; a sermon recording may include hymns, backing tracks, photographs, or other material with separate rights. Read YouTube’s terms and clear each item before broadcasting.
Create a YouTube Live stream and get its connection details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open the Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select the event you intend to use. YouTube supplies an ingestion server URL and a stream key for the encoder connection.
- Copy those values into the encoder configuration on the VPS. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public command or screenshot, or share it with people who do not need access. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Start with a private or unlisted test if appropriate for your church. Check the preview, picture, audio, and YouTube stream health before directing viewers to the stream.
YouTube documents the encoder connection process in its live encoder setup guide. Choose RTMPS where supported; YouTube recommends it, and it encrypts the feed in transit to Google.
Choose video settings that match the source and connection
Use a stable configuration the encoder can sustain. For broad compatibility, H.264 is a practical baseline. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. The settings must agree with what your encoder actually supports.
| Example H.264 output | YouTube minimum video bitrate | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 360p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are video bitrate figures from YouTube’s current encoder guidance; configure audio separately using settings supported by your encoder and YouTube’s current requirements. YouTube transcodes live feeds for different playback formats, so the outgoing encoder bitrate is not the same as each viewer’s playback bitrate. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and recheck them when configuring your stream.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prepare Lightsail and the encoder
- Select a Linux instance for the actual workload. Lightsail bundles vary in compute, memory, storage, transfer allowance, region, and availability. No single bundle is established as suitable for every sermon-streaming setup. A process that relays an already encoded file and one that encodes video using the CPU can have very different resource needs. Measure CPU, memory, disk use, and stability with your chosen method before relying on it.
- Make media available to the instance. Keep enough storage for the active file or playlist, allow room for logs and updates, and keep independent backups of original recordings. Confirm that the playlist references files that exist at the paths used by the encoder.
- Secure administration and the stream key. Allow only the inbound firewall access needed to administer the VPS. The stream itself is sent outbound; Lightsail permits outbound traffic. If a stable public address is useful after stopping and starting an instance, AWS says an attached static IP has no charge. See Lightsail firewall and networking guidance.
- Run the encoder under supervision. Configure an operating-system-appropriate service manager or restart mechanism so the encoder can be restarted after a process failure or reboot. Keep the stream key out of readable public files and command history where possible, and restrict access to the configuration containing it. The exact service and playlist implementation depend on your Linux distribution and encoder; YouTube does not prescribe them.
- Verify before announcing the channel. Start the encoder, inspect the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators, and confirm the video and audio are correct. Check disk space and transfer consumption while the stream runs.
Estimate transfer use and total cost
The encoder’s upload bitrate is a major driver of Lightsail transfer use. A useful decimal estimate is:
Monthly upload in GB ≈ bitrate in megabits/second × active seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000.

At a constant 5 Mbps for 30 days, the estimate is about 1,620 GB of encoder upload before overhead; at 10 Mbps, about 3,240 GB. These are calculations based on the assumed bitrate and continuous operation, not AWS usage statistics. Compare the result with the current transfer allowance for the plan and region you choose. Lightsail counts inbound and outbound data toward its allowance, and qualifying outbound use above the allowance can incur regional charges. Check AWS Lightsail data-transfer rules before deployment.
AWS’s Lightsail bundle documentation lists a Linux/Unix Nano IPv4 example at $5 per month, with 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB storage, and 1 TB transfer. This is a documented example, not a recommendation that it can run your encoder; availability, price, and plan details can vary. Verify current figures for your region in AWS’s Lightsail bundles documentation.

Plan for long-running streams and archives
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous 24/7 feed will be saved as one complete video. Keep source recordings independently, and consider publishing individual sermon recordings separately if viewers need dependable on-demand access. You can also plan a controlled schedule of shorter live events, but confirm how that affects your programming and audience before changing the format.
Monitor failures and troubleshoot
A VPS does not remove the need to watch the encoder, instance, and YouTube status. Establish who will respond if the stream stops and what viewers should see during an interruption.

| Symptom | Likely check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the feed | Check that the encoder uses the current server URL and stream key, and that the process is running. | Copy the current connection details from the intended Live Control Room stream; replace any exposed key and update the VPS configuration. |
| Preview is unstable or stream health is poor | Check outbound bandwidth, encoder load, and whether the configured bitrate matches the instance’s capacity. | Test at a lower resolution or bitrate, then monitor the health indicator before returning to the intended setting. |
| Video plays but audio is missing or distorted | Check the source file’s audio track and the encoder’s audio input and codec configuration. | Test the file locally and verify audio in YouTube’s preview before continuing the broadcast. |
| Feed stops after an instance restart or encoder failure | Check whether the encoder starts automatically, whether the media path is available, and whether the service logs show an error. | Use a suitable supervisor or restart policy, verify file paths and permissions, and confirm the stream reconnects in YouTube. |
| Transfer allowance is reached sooner than expected | Compare actual bitrate and operating hours with your monthly estimate; account for other inbound and outbound traffic. | Check current regional Lightsail transfer pricing and allowance, then adjust the plan or stream configuration if appropriate. |
