If YouTube Live tops out at 1440p when you expect 4K at 60 fps, first check what your encoder is actually sending and what YouTube detects. A 4K camera or game capture does not guarantee a 4K stream. Confirm the encoder’s output is 3840×2160 at 60 progressive frames per second, then check the ingest codec, bitrate, upload stability, and stream health. YouTube’s automatic detection is normally sufficient; its custom stream-key settings also allow manual resolution selection.
Find where the resolution drops
Trace the video through the chain: source or capture device, encoder output, then YouTube’s received stream. Compare the encoder’s configured output with the resolution YouTube reports receiving in Live Control Room. If the encoder is sending 2560×1440, YouTube cannot display that ingest as 3840×2160 simply because the original source was 4K.
- Check the source and capture chain. Confirm that the game, camera, capture device, and any intermediate processing support the intended 3840×2160 at 60 fps. A limitation anywhere in that chain can reduce the signal before it reaches the encoder.
- Check the encoder’s output settings. Set the output resolution to 3840×2160 and the frame rate to 60 fps (progressive), then verify the encoder’s live output or status display while streaming.
- Check YouTube’s received resolution. In Live Control Room, compare the detected ingest resolution and frame rate with the encoder output. This helps distinguish an encoder or capture issue from an ingest configuration issue.
- Check the ingest codec and bitrate. Use the recommendation for the actual codec and resolution; the figures differ for H.264 and AV1/H.265.
- Rehearse over the connection you intend to use. Use representative gameplay or other fast-moving content, then watch stream health and messages while checking upload performance.
YouTube’s recommendations below concern live-stream ingestion, not prerecorded video uploads. The official encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
Match bitrate to codec and resolution
YouTube publishes separate minimum and recommended ingest bitrates for each resolution and codec combination. Use the row that matches the stream your encoder sends, rather than assuming that one target applies to all 4K encoders.

| Ingest format | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps, AV1/H.265 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps, H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps, AV1/H.265 | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps, H.264 | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s current live-encoder figures, accessed in 2026. A bitrate below the recommendation may compromise the stream’s ability to deliver the intended quality, but changing bitrate alone will not turn a 1440p encoder output into 4K. Confirm the resolution and codec first, then set CBR and the corresponding bitrate target.
Use automatic detection or set resolution manually
Live Control Room normally detects the resolution and frame rate automatically. If you need to select them manually, YouTube documents doing so with a custom stream key.

- In Live Control Room, open Stream settings and create or select a custom stream key.
- Under Stream Resolution, select Turn on manual settings.
- Choose the resolution and frame rate that match the encoder’s actual output. A manual selection cannot compensate for an encoder or capture chain that sends a lower-resolution signal.
Keep the stream-key workflow separate from image-quality diagnosis: the key and stream URL tell your encoder where to send its feed and let YouTube accept it. YouTube explains key management in Manage live stream settings.
Test upload capacity during a real rehearsal
YouTube recommends testing your upload bitrate. Measure performance on the same connection the stream will use, and rehearse with similar motion and audio so the test resembles the real broadcast. Leave room for other traffic on the connection; that is practical planning, not a fixed YouTube speed guarantee. YouTube does not establish a single household upload-plan threshold for every 4K60 stream in the cited guidance.

- If upload performance varies or stream health reports problems, reduce competing network traffic and test again.
- If the actual connection is unstable over Wi-Fi, try Ethernet and repeat the rehearsal. A cable can help with wireless instability, but it cannot fix an encoder set to 1440p, an insufficient frame rate, or an incorrectly configured bitrate.
- Do not treat a single speed-test result as proof that a sustained live stream will remain stable; monitor stream health during a representative test.
Confirm RTMPS and stream-key setup
YouTube recommends RTMPS. In Live Control Room, open Stream settings and reveal the RTMPS stream URL using the lock icon, then enter that URL and the stream key in your encoder. If the encoder reports a connection error, check that it is using the RTMPS URL. For an SSL error, YouTube says port 443 can be tried. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance.
Treat a connection failure separately from a 1440p ceiling: incorrect URL or key details can prevent the feed from connecting, while an encoder that successfully sends 1440p still needs its output configuration corrected to send 4K.

What 4K latency does—and does not—explain
YouTube says 4K/2160p streams do not offer the low-latency option and are optimized for quality at normal latency. This is a separate stream-behavior limitation, not evidence that latency causes a 1440p resolution ceiling.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube detects 1440p | Encoder output resolution or an earlier capture-chain limit | Verify the full path and set encoder output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps. |
| Encoder is set to 4K60, but stream health is poor | Codec-specific bitrate or upload instability | Match the target to YouTube’s 4K60 recommendation for the active codec, test upload performance, and rehearse while monitoring stream health. |
| Encoder cannot connect to YouTube | Stream URL, RTMPS protocol, or key | Verify the RTMPS URL and key in Live Control Room; if troubleshooting an SSL error, YouTube says port 443 can be tried. |
| 4K stream does not offer low latency | 4K latency behavior | Use normal latency for 4K; do not treat the latency option as the cause of a 1440p ceiling. |
| Wi-Fi tests are inconsistent | Wireless upload stability | Try Ethernet as a network-stability test, then repeat the rehearsal. It will not correct video-output settings. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded-video YouTube stream that should stay live around the clock, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so your home computer and connection do not have to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not live camera feeds. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
