One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo stream 4K at 60 fps from a video file on Ubuntu 24.04, use FFmpeg to send a real-time FLV stream over RTMPS to the ingest endpoint shown in YouTube Live Control Room. For H.264, YouTube recommends 50 Mbps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. First inspect the file: if it already matches your intended output, stream copy may avoid an unnecessary encode; otherwise, transcode it with an encoder supported by your installed FFmpeg build.
What you need for a 4K60 YouTube Live stream
- Ubuntu 24.04 with FFmpeg installed. Check the installed version and available encoders before choosing an encode path.
- A video file with suitable picture and audio. Inspect its resolution, frame rate, codecs, pixel format, and bitrate before streaming.
- A YouTube live stream configured in Live Control Room, where you can retrieve the current ingest endpoint and stream key.
- A stable upload connection with capacity for the selected video bitrate plus audio and network overhead. YouTube’s published bitrate is an ingest recommendation, not a guarantee that your source, encoder, or connection will sustain the stream.
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists two codec paths for 4K/2160p at 60 fps:
| Video codec | YouTube minimum ingest bitrate | YouTube recommended ingest bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC or AV1 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube Help’s published guidance, accessed in 2026. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest up to 60 fps. It recommends H.265 for HDR and does not support AV1 for HDR. For SDR, YouTube specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit; for HDR, 10-bit. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the current requirements and supported formats.
Inspect the input and Ubuntu FFmpeg build
Check the video file
Use ffprobe, which is included with many FFmpeg packages, to inspect the source before deciding whether to copy or re-encode:

ffprobe -hide_banner -i input.mp4
Record the video codec, dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, bitrate, and audio streams. A 4K60 file is not necessarily suitable to pass through unchanged: its codec, keyframe cadence, bitrate, or audio format may not match the intended YouTube ingest configuration.
Check FFmpeg and available encoders
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders
Confirm the installed binary provides the encoder you intend to use. FFmpeg options vary with version and build configuration. Ubuntu 24.04 documentation lists VAAPI and QSV hardware acceleration, but that does not mean a particular computer, driver, decoder, or encoder supports the required path. Do not assume hardware encoding is available or that a system can sustain 4K60 without verifying its capabilities. See the Ubuntu 24.04 FFmpeg manual.

Get YouTube’s ingest endpoint and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the current ingest server URL and stream key from the stream’s settings. Use the endpoint YouTube provides rather than guessing a server URL.
- Use RTMPS when supported by your workflow. YouTube recommends the encrypted ingest option.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, repository, shell history, or log. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls.
In the examples below, replace rtmps://INGEST_HOST/live2/STREAM_KEY with the exact RTMPS endpoint and key provided for your stream. The placeholder is illustrative, not a usable YouTube address.
Choose stream copy or re-encoding
Use stream copy only when the source already fits
If the input is already 3840×2160 at 60 fps, uses the intended supported video codec, and has suitable bitrate and keyframe cadence, FFmpeg may be able to copy its streams without re-encoding. Stream copy preserves the existing encoded media; it does not resize, change frame rate, improve bitrate, or fix an unsuitable keyframe interval. Confirm the source properties before choosing it.

A starting pattern for sending a file in real time as FLV over RTMP is:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c copy -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_HOST/live2/STREAM_KEY'
FFmpeg documents -re for reading a media file at its native rate and FLV output for an RTMP server; RTMPS is a documented protocol variant. This is a command pattern, not a tested end-to-end command for every file, FFmpeg build, or YouTube stream. If YouTube rejects the stream or reports incompatible media, inspect the source and consider transcoding.

Transcode to an illustrative H.264 4K60 configuration
When conversion is needed and your FFmpeg build supports libx264, this example sets a 3840×2160, 60 fps H.264 output with a 50 Mbps target, a two-second GOP, and AAC audio:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
-vf 'scale=3840:2160,fps=60'
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-b:v 50M -maxrate 50M -bufsize 100M
-g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_HOST/live2/STREAM_KEY'
The 50 Mbps video rate follows YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 4K60. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds between keyframes. At 60 fps, a 120-frame GOP represents two seconds. The command is an illustrative starting point, not a universal preset: inspect the input, check encoder support, and adapt scaling, pixel format, profile, and audio mapping to the actual file and YouTube’s current guidance. The audio options shown are one example; they do not establish that every source has an audio stream compatible with this mapping.

If you select H.265/HEVC or AV1 instead, use the applicable YouTube bitrate recommendation and verify that your FFmpeg build, encoder, and ingest workflow support the codec. Do not simply retain the H.264 example’s rate and assume the other codec path is configured correctly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Start the stream and verify it in YouTube
- Run the chosen FFmpeg command in a terminal. Keep the terminal open while FFmpeg is sending the file.
- Wait for the incoming stream to appear in YouTube Live Control Room. Check that the reported resolution, frame rate, and stream health match your intent.
- Before the real broadcast, test with representative movement and audio. YouTube specifically advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
- Monitor the Live Control Room during the broadcast and respond to warnings or dropped input. A successful FFmpeg start alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving the expected quality.
YouTube notes that 4K streams are optimized for normal latency rather than receiving its low-latency improvement option. Choose latency expectations with that limitation in mind.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect ingest endpoint or stream key, or a connection problem | Copy the current endpoint and key again from Live Control Room, check the FFmpeg output for connection errors, and confirm the connection can reach the ingest service. |
| YouTube reports an unsupported or incorrect resolution or frame rate | The source was copied with properties different from the intended 4K60 output, or the transcode filter did not produce the expected output | Recheck the file with ffprobe and inspect the incoming stream in Live Control Room. Use a suitable transcode configuration if the source does not match. |
| Stream health warns about bitrate or instability | The upload path may not sustain the selected bitrate, or the encoder may not be producing steadily | Check FFmpeg’s live output and the connection’s sustained upload capacity. Test with representative content before relying on the stream. |
| The encoder is unavailable | The installed FFmpeg build does not include the requested encoder or hardware support | Review ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -encoders; select an encoder actually present in the build rather than assuming GPU acceleration. |
| Video works but audio is missing or rejected | The input’s audio streams may not match the example’s assumed mapping or codec settings | Inspect audio streams with ffprobe and adjust mapping and encoding for the actual source. Test both sound and picture before the event. |
| The stream stops when the local machine or connection stops | This FFmpeg workflow depends on the computer, process, and network connection continuing to run | For this DIY method, keep the machine powered, the process running, and the connection stable; or use the cloud option below for uploaded-video looping. |
