How to Keep OBS at 60 FPS During a 4K YouTube Live Loop

A practical 4K60 OBS troubleshooting guide: distinguish a changed setting from dropped frames, separate network trouble from local overload, and check YouTube’s encoder recommendations.

To keep a 4K YouTube Live loop at 60 fps, first check whether OBS has actually changed its configured frame rate—or whether it is still set to 60 fps but dropping frames or struggling to render or encode them. Check Settings > Video, then compare OBS Stats with the resolution, frame rate and stream-health messages shown in YouTube Live Control Room. These checks point to different causes, so changing the frame-rate setting before diagnosing the symptom can make the stream look worse without fixing the problem.

Tell a changed setting from frames the stream fails to deliver

OBS’s selected frame rate and the frames it successfully sends are separate things. If Settings > Video still shows 60 fps, that alone does not mean OBS is delivering every frame to YouTube. The OBS guidance reviewed explains dropped frames and rendering or encoding overload; it does not say OBS automatically changes the selected frame-rate setting during a live loop.

  • Configured value changed: The frame rate shown in OBS Settings > Video is no longer 60 fps. Check that setting directly and confirm the output resolution there too.
  • Dropped frames: OBS Stats shows the dropped-frames counter increasing, often alongside a yellow or red connection indicator. This points toward an unstable connection to YouTube or an upload connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
  • Rendering or encoding overload: The output looks choppy or laggy, or OBS reports “encoding overloaded.” This points toward local system resources, the scene, rendering or encoding—not necessarily the internet connection.
  • YouTube reports a stream problem: Read the message and check the received stream details in Live Control Room. Compare what YouTube is receiving with OBS’s configured output rather than relying on one display alone.

YouTube says it detects encoder settings automatically by default. If you need to select the resolution manually in Live Control Room, YouTube’s instructions call for a custom stream key and manual settings enabled under Stream Resolution.

Diagnose the stream in this order

  1. Confirm OBS output: Open Settings > Video. Check the output resolution and frame rate. If the target is 4K at 60 fps, verify that those are the values currently selected.
  2. Check OBS Stats while the loop is live: Note whether the dropped-frames counter is increasing and what the connection indicator shows. A connection warning with rising dropped frames points to delivery over the network; it is not, by itself, proof that the configured frame rate changed.
  3. Look for local overload separately: Check for “encoding overloaded,” choppy output or lag. OBS’s performance guidance recommends freeing system resources. On Windows, its suggestions include running OBS as administrator, closing GPU-heavy applications, capping a game’s frame rate or enabling V-Sync, lowering game graphics settings, and simplifying scenes, sources, browser sources and filters. The game-specific steps matter when a game is running alongside OBS; for a video loop, focus on unnecessary applications and scene complexity.
  4. Compare YouTube’s received stream and health: Check Live Control Room for the received resolution and frame rate and review stream-health messages. If OBS remains configured for 60 fps but YouTube reports a different received result, use both the OBS counters and YouTube messages to narrow down whether the issue is local processing or stream delivery.
  5. Change one thing at a time: If the evidence points to local load, simplify the scene or free resources, then check Stats and YouTube again. If it points to dropped frames and connection status, investigate whether the connection can sustain the bitrate. This makes it easier to tell which change helped.
  6. Preflight before relying on the loop: Test with audio and movement similar to the actual stream, then monitor OBS Stats and YouTube stream health. YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream.

Set up YouTube’s 4K60 encoder settings accurately

YouTube’s encoder guidance accessed in 2026 lists different bitrate recommendations for 4K (2160p) at 60 fps depending on the codec. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer can render and encode a scene or that a particular internet connection can sustain the stream.

Setting YouTube guidance for 4K / 2160p at 60 fps
AV1 or H.265 bitrate 10 Mbps minimum; 35 Mbps recommended
H.264 bitrate 14 Mbps minimum; 50 Mbps recommended
Bitrate mode CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds
Frame rate Up to 60 fps
Ingestion protocol RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS
Latency at 4K Low-latency mode is unavailable for 4K; YouTube sets 4K streams to normal latency, optimized for quality

Use the bitrate recommendation for the codec you are actually sending: 35 Mbps is the recommended figure for AV1 or H.265, while 50 Mbps is recommended for H.264. A bitrate that is too demanding for the available upload connection can contribute to delivery trouble; lowering it may help a connection symptom, but it does not correct a local rendering or encoding overload. There is no single bitrate that fixes every OBS frame-rate problem.

Choose whether to preserve 60 fps or reduce the load

Keep 60 fps when the system can sustain it

If OBS is not reporting local overload and the connection can sustain the selected bitrate, keep the 60 fps target and investigate the specific symptom shown by Stats and YouTube. Frame rate affects rendering and encoding performance, so a stable configured value does not guarantee the computer has enough headroom to produce the output smoothly.

Use 30 fps or lower resolution as a fallback for local overload

OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. This reduces load, but it does not preserve a 60 fps target. Reducing output resolution is another way to reduce system load. Choose either change only if the need to keep 4K60 is less important than a stable stream, and verify the result in OBS and YouTube after the change.

Consider a compatible hardware encoder only when the evidence supports it

A hardware encoder can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component and often has minimal performance impact. Older hardware-encoder generations may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate. Check the encoder options already available on your system and whether OBS shows an encoding bottleneck before considering a hardware change. The available guidance does not establish a universal hardware recommendation.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 loop problems

What you see Likely area to investigate Next step
OBS still shows 60 fps, but Stats shows rising dropped frames and a yellow or red connection indicator Connection to YouTube or insufficient upload capacity for the set bitrate Check the stream-health messages and whether the connection can sustain the bitrate. Do not treat the symptom as proof that OBS changed its frame-rate setting.

60 fps remains unstable after scene and resource adjustments System may not sustain the target workload Test 30 fps or a lower output resolution as a deliberate quality trade-off, then verify the received stream.
Problem appears only when starting a long loop Unverified conditions during the actual stream Preflight with similar audio and movement, and monitor stream health and OBS Stats after going live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube loop rather than keeping OBS and a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.

The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream live camera footage. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
