YouTube Live Resolution Drops on BSNL Broadband: OBS Settings to Check

A YouTube Live quality drop does not always mean OBS changed resolution. Use OBS and YouTube stream-health indicators, then test bitrate, encoder settings, and your BSNL network path.

If your YouTube Live picture seems to drop in resolution on BSNL broadband, first check whether OBS is actually losing network frames. An encoder’s output resolution, the stream reaching YouTube, and the quality a viewer receives are different things. Use OBS’s dropped-frame counter and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages to identify which part needs attention; there is no established BSNL-specific OBS setting that fixes every case.

First identify what “resolution drops” means

OBS’s configured output resolution does not automatically change just because a viewer sees a softer picture. YouTube creates different playback formats from a live stream, and a viewer’s device or connection may buffer or select a lower rendition while the encoder remains healthy. Start with the indicators at the source and on YouTube, rather than treating one viewer’s playback selector as proof that OBS changed settings. See the OBS Help Portal and YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

  • OBS network dropped frames rise or the stream disconnects: troubleshoot bitrate and the network path. OBS says dropped frames indicate a connection problem between the computer and remote ingest server; they are not proof of a resolution-setting change. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
  • YouTube Live Control Room reports stream-health problems: use those messages to check what YouTube is receiving and whether the encoder settings meet its ingest guidance.
  • OBS and YouTube look healthy, but one viewer sees buffering or lower quality: check the viewer’s playback separately. The viewer’s device, location, and connection can affect playback. See OBS Stream Buffering Troubleshooting.

Run a representative test before changing settings

Make a short private or unlisted test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream. Watch OBS’s connection indicator and network dropped-frame counter, and check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube explicitly advises testing before a live stream and monitoring stream health. A static test image may not reveal problems that appear during gameplay, fast movement, or busier audio.

  1. Start the test and note its time, OBS’s output resolution and bitrate, and whether dropped frames increase.
  2. Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health messages during the same interval.
  3. If OBS reports network dropped frames, test delivery stability and reduce the stream’s demand on the connection.
  4. If OBS and YouTube remain healthy while only a particular viewer has trouble, compare playback on another device or connection before changing encoder output.

Choose bitrate for stable upload, not a peak speed test

A speed test is a useful starting measurement, not proof that an upload rate will hold throughout a live event. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality the connection can sustain. OBS’s 2024-09-30 troubleshooting guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a general starting point for setting bitrate; it is neither a YouTube requirement nor a guarantee for a BSNL line. Other devices uploading at home and moment-to-moment variation can leave less capacity for OBS.

If network dropped frames rise, lower OBS’s video bitrate first. If the stream still cannot sustain it, reduce output resolution or frame rate as needed. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations below are platform guidance, not measurements of any BSNL connection; the minimum is not a guarantee of the target quality. Do not mix these values with the separate AV1 or H.265/HEVC columns in YouTube’s encoder table.

H.264 output YouTube recommended bitrate YouTube minimum bitrate
720p30 8 Mbps 2 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 6 Mbps

These are the H.264 entries in YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table. The difference between 1080p30 and 1080p60 is a useful reminder that resolution alone does not determine the upload demand: frame rate and codec matter too.

Check OBS and YouTube encoder settings

For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; supports up to 60 frames per second; recommends constant bitrate (CBR); and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Use RTMPS where supported. These settings help the platform ingest the stream correctly, but cannot make an unstable connection deliver a bitrate it cannot sustain.

  • Bitrate: set a rate your upload can hold, then repeat the representative test. Reduce it if OBS’s network dropped frames increase.
  • Resolution and frame rate: if lowering bitrate alone is not enough, try a lower output resolution or frame rate and test again. Choose based on the motion and detail your stream needs.
  • Rate control: use CBR for YouTube ingest, as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframe interval: use two seconds as the recommended setting and do not exceed four seconds.
  • Stream resolution detection: YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate automatically. With a custom stream key, manual selection is available under Stream Resolution in Live Control Room.

For exact codec-specific settings, use the relevant codec column in YouTube’s current encoder guidance; do not apply H.264 values to AV1 or HEVC by assumption.

Test the local network path

If the streaming computer is on Wi-Fi, make one comparable test over wired Ethernet. OBS recommends wired connectivity because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If the wired test improves, the wireless segment may be contributing; it does not prove that the rest of the BSNL route is healthy. A Cat6 cable is one practical way to run this test, provided the computer has an Ethernet port or suitable adapter and the cable reaches the router.

OBS also lists VPNs, firewall or antivirus interference, network-prioritization software, outdated drivers, modem/router connectivity, and faulty network hardware as possible contributors. Change reversible settings one at a time and retain OBS logs so you can compare results. Avoid replacing a router or computer based on the symptom alone.

Try OBS network options as controlled experiments

OBS’s connection guide documents additional options, but they are troubleshooting experiments rather than universal presets. On Windows, you can test network optimizations and TCP pacing; keep Bind to IP at Default. If appropriate, test IPv4-only, then return to the IPv4 and IPv6 default if the change does not help.

OBS also offers “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta).” It can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, potentially avoiding dropped frames at the cost of picture quality. OBS cautions that dynamic bitrate does not fix the underlying connection issue. See OBS’s documented network troubleshooting steps before changing options.

Know what BSNL evidence can and cannot tell you

BSNL’s plans and network conditions vary by circle, plan, access type, and local conditions. A BSNL Chennai Telephones Bharat Fibre sheet marked updated 2025-10-01 is regional and lists speeds as “up to FUP” and “after FUP”; it cannot establish an individual subscriber’s upload speed or sustained route quality. BSNL’s plan portal asks users to select an area, so check your own circle and plan rather than applying one regional figure nationwide: BSNL Chennai Telephones Bharat Fibre plans and BSNL plan portal.

The available official information does not establish a current nationwide BSNL fault, a plan-independent upload rate, or a BSNL-only encoder prescription. If the stream still loses network frames after a wired test and a lower sustainable bitrate, BSNL is the provider to contact about the subscriber’s access service or route—not a reason to assume every resolution drop has the same cause.

Escalate with useful evidence

Before contacting BSNL, gather the details that help separate a line problem from an encoder or viewer issue:

  • Times when the dropped frames or stream-health warnings occurred.
  • OBS logs and the video bitrate, output resolution, and frame rate used for the test.
  • YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages from the same period.
  • Speed-test results taken during the problem, plus whether other household devices were uploading.
  • Your BSNL plan and circle, and whether the test used Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet.

OBS recommends contacting the ISP if its troubleshooting steps do not resolve persistent dropped frames. BSNL’s customer-care page lists 1800-4444 for Bharat Fiber, broadband, and landline support; confirm the relevant channel on BSNL Customer Care. BSNL Self Care also describes a broadband speed-test feature in its app privacy information; that offers another way to measure your connection, not a diagnosis of a particular line.
