YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings control broadcast start and stop behavior; they are not encoder reconnect settings.
1. Point the playout service at the right YouTube broadcast

In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select the scheduled stream for the service, or create one if needed.

Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s stream settings into the destination settings of the church’s playout service. YouTube describes the key as what tells the encoder where to send its feed and lets YouTube accept it. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Confirm the service is connected to that scheduled broadcast—not merely configured for the church’s channel in general. Treat the stream key like a password: keep it out of screenshots, volunteer handouts, and public chats. If it is exposed or reset, reset it in YouTube and update the key in the playout service.

2. Enable reconnection in the encoder or playout service
Find the service’s reconnect, retry, or automatic recovery option and enable it if available. Its location, retry interval, and exact behavior depend on the specific product and version, which are not identified here; check that product’s current documentation rather than relying on a universal menu path.
If the church uses OBS, its connection troubleshooting guide helps diagnose disconnections and dropped frames, but it does not document the reconnect setting details. Do not assume an OBS instruction applies to another playout service.
3. Choose YouTube’s broadcast start and stop behavior
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls are distinct from the encoder’s reconnect feature. YouTube says that when these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from the encoder. Check them in the selected stream’s settings, especially when preparing a new service from reused stream settings: YouTube says reused settings copy the auto-start and auto-stop selections.
For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then select Go live. With auto-start enabled, streaming can be started from the encoder. Confirm the chosen behavior in rehearsal so volunteers know whether a manual Go live action is required after the feed returns. Set auto-stop deliberately as well. It governs whether encoder actions stop the broadcast; it does not by itself promise that an interrupted feed will reconnect or that the broadcast will remain active while the encoder is offline.
4. Rehearse interruption and recovery before a service

In a non-public or otherwise controlled test, start the playout service and verify that the expected preview, picture, and audio appear in Live Control Room.

Briefly interrupt the encoder’s network connection, then restore it. Check whether the encoder resumes sending and whether the intended scheduled broadcast remains available.

Check both Live Control Room and the viewer-facing broadcast. Note whether a volunteer must click Go live or take another action before viewers see the restored feed.

Test the planned shutdown too: YouTube’s scheduled workflow says to click End Stream and stop encoder output. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this is an archive threshold, not a reconnect guarantee.
This rehearsal is a practical validation step, not a guarantee that every future outage will recover unattended.
5. Troubleshoot a feed that does not return
Check connection quality and bitrate
OBS Project says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames may disconnect the encoder. Its troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, recommends checking that bitrate against stable upload speed, trying another ingest server where applicable, reviewing network-related settings, removing VPN or security software interference, and checking network drivers and hardware. These are OBS-specific suggestions; use only those that fit the software and setup in use.
If the stream relies on Wi-Fi and a suitable port and cable are available, test a wired Ethernet connection. OBS recommends wired connectivity for streaming. A cable is an optional troubleshooting measure, not a universal requirement or a guarantee of reconnection.

Verify the destination and key
Make sure the service still targets the intended scheduled stream. If the YouTube stream key was reset or replaced, enter the new key in the playout service; a reset key will not work until the encoder is updated.
Do not treat lower quality as a network repair
OBS notes that dynamic bitrate adjustment may reduce stream quality, but it does not fix the underlying network problem. If instability continues, address the upload connection or other network-path issue and repeat the controlled recovery test.
