Does YouTube Live Accept AV1 for 4K at 60 fps?

YouTube accepts AV1 for SDR 4K/60 live streams, with published bitrate bounds of 10–40 Mbps. Here are the settings and limitations to check.

Yes. YouTube Live accepts AV1 ingestion for SDR streams, including 4K (2160p) at up to 60 fps. YouTube’s published bitrate range for 4K/60 AV1 is 10–40 Mbps. AV1 is not supported for HDR in YouTube’s guidance, and 4K streams use normal latency rather than the low-latency improvement option.

AV1 4K/60 requirements at a glance

Setting YouTube’s published guidance
Stream protocol RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
Video codec AV1 is a supported ingestion codec. YouTube also lists H.264 and H.265/HEVC for RTMP/RTMPS encoder streaming.
Resolution and frame rate 4K/2160p at up to 60 fps.
AV1/H.265 bitrate at 4K/60 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum. These are YouTube’s published bounds, not a promise that a particular encoder or connection will be stable.
Bitrate mode CBR.
Keyframes Recommended every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
AV1 tiling At 3840×2160 and above, use at least two tile columns.
Latency at 4K Normal latency. The low-latency improvement option is unavailable for 4K/2160.
HDR AV1 is not supported for HDR in YouTube’s guidance; the cited guidance specifies H.265/HEVC for HDR.

These settings come from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings guidance. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains that a live encoder may be software or standalone hardware. The cited help pages do not display publication dates, so check the current guidance before an important broadcast.

Configure an SDR AV1 stream

  1. Confirm the encoder can output AV1 at 3840×2160 and 60 fps. Check its codec, resolution and frame-rate support, along with RTMP/RTMPS output and AV1 tile settings. YouTube’s guidance does not certify specific encoder models.
  2. Set the output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps. Choose SDR if you intend to use AV1. Do not configure AV1 4K/60 HDR on the assumption that YouTube’s cited settings support it.
  3. Select RTMPS if available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streaming. Use the stream key and server details provided in YouTube Live Control Room; keep the key private.
  4. Set a constant bitrate (CBR) from 10 to 40 Mbps. The range is YouTube’s published 4K/60 AV1/H.265 guidance. A value inside the range is not a guarantee of stability: the encoder and upload connection must sustain the chosen bitrate, including during complex motion.
  5. Set keyframes every 2 seconds. YouTube recommends this interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  6. Set AV1 tile columns to at least two. This applies at 3840×2160 and above.
  7. Expect normal latency. YouTube says the low-latency improvement option is not available at 4K/2160.
  8. Test the complete setup before the event. Send representative movement and audio, then check stream health and messages in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming that a settings match guarantees a successful stream.

When AV1 is the wrong choice

You need HDR

YouTube’s encoder guidance states, “AV1 is not supported for HDR.” Its cited guidance specifies H.265/HEVC for HDR. If HDR is required, use the codec and settings in YouTube’s current HDR guidance rather than treating AV1’s SDR support as HDR support.

Your encoder cannot meet the full configuration

Codec support alone is not enough: the encoder must handle 4K at 60 fps, the selected bitrate, the required AV1 tiling and RTMP/RTMPS output. YouTube’s documentation establishes its ingestion guidance, not compatibility for every device, application, stream key or account.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

You require low latency at 4K

YouTube’s published guidance says the low-latency improvement option is unavailable for 4K/2160, which is optimized for quality at normal latency. Consider whether 4K is essential if your broadcast depends on a lower-latency mode.

Troubleshoot an AV1 4K/60 stream

  • YouTube does not accept or recognize the stream: Confirm the encoder is actually sending AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS and that it is using the current server details and stream key from Live Control Room.
  • The stream is unstable or reports poor health: Check that the connection can sustain the configured bitrate, keep CBR enabled, and test with representative movement. The 10–40 Mbps range is YouTube’s published bound, not a network-capacity guarantee.
  • Video does not meet the 4K/60 target: Verify the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate as well as the source media; a codec setting by itself does not ensure 3840×2160 at 60 fps.
  • AV1 tiling causes a configuration issue: At 3840×2160 and above, check that at least two tile columns are configured.
  • HDR is missing or rejected: AV1 HDR is outside the support described by YouTube’s cited guidance. Use a supported HDR workflow, for which YouTube specifies H.265/HEVC.
  • You cannot enable low latency: At 4K/2160, the low-latency improvement option is unavailable; YouTube uses normal latency.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube rather than operate an encoder yourself, StreamNeo runs an uploaded recording or playlist from the cloud. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video and YouTube streaming, not a live camera feed. Start the free first day.
