YouTube Live Bitrate for 1080p 30fps Pre-Recorded Video

For YouTube Live at 1080p30, use 14 Mbps with H.264 or 10 Mbps with H.265/HEVC or AV1. Learn the minimums and the key encoder settings for prerecorded video.

For a 1080p, 30 fps YouTube Live stream, set the outgoing video bitrate to 14 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1, following YouTube’s en-US encoder guidance. These are recommended ingestion rates, not guarantees of identical picture quality. The fact that the video was prerecorded does not call for a different bitrate: use the rate for the stream’s outgoing resolution, frame rate, and codec.

Recommended bitrate by codec

YouTube’s en-US encoder settings distinguish the recommended bitrate from the minimum. The figures below are for the outgoing stream at 1920×1080 and 30 fps; choose the row matching the codec actually sent to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder settings may change, so check the live guidance when configuring a stream.

Outgoing video codec Minimum at 1080p30 Recommended at 1080p30
H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
H.265/HEVC 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
AV1 4 Mbps 10 Mbps

Treat the minimum as a lower bound, not the target when you can sustain the recommended rate. YouTube’s figures concern the stream it receives; they are not a requirement for the prerecorded file’s export bitrate. A source file encoded at a high rate cannot restore detail that was not present in the original, and a live bitrate setting alone does not determine final viewer quality.

Set up the outgoing stream

  1. Set resolution and frame rate: configure the encoder output to 1920×1080 at 30 fps. The stream output settings—not just the file’s properties—determine which YouTube table row applies.
  2. Choose the video codec and bitrate: use H.264 at 14 Mbps, or H.265/HEVC or AV1 at 10 Mbps, if the encoder and your workflow support that codec. YouTube lists all three for RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings. If you need to use a lower rate, the cited minimums are 5 Mbps for H.264 and 4 Mbps for H.265/AV1.
  3. Use constant bitrate (CBR): YouTube recommends CBR for encoder streaming. Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  4. Check upload capacity: test the connection’s upload rate, not its download rate. YouTube says total streaming bitrate should remain within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Account for audio and any additional stream data when checking capacity.
  5. Send securely: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Add the stream key in the encoder or service that sends the stream; keep it private and do not include it in a public post or recording.
  6. Test and monitor: run a test with representative audio and motion before the intended broadcast. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages during the stream; a configured bitrate does not by itself prove that the connection is stable.

YouTube describes encoder streaming as a way to broadcast, and an encoder may be streaming software or standalone hardware. The bitrate guidance does not require a particular brand or product. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance for testing and stream-health recommendations.

What prerecorded video changes—and what it does not

For bitrate selection, prerecorded footage is treated according to the outgoing stream’s resolution, frame rate, and codec; YouTube’s cited table does not specify a separate rate for prerecorded material. Do not assume that a file’s export bitrate should be copied directly into the live encoder. If a streaming workflow decodes and re-encodes the file, use the bitrate for that outgoing encode. If a cloud service sends the uploaded video as a live stream, confirm which output settings it applies rather than inferring them from the source file alone.

Bandwidth, latency, and stream health

Leave upload headroom

The chosen video bitrate must fit within the available upstream bandwidth along with audio and other stream data. YouTube recommends 20% headroom, so a connection that only barely matches the video target leaves no room for variation. If the connection cannot sustain the recommended rate reliably, improve the upload path or lower the output rate while staying mindful that a lower setting is below YouTube’s recommendation.

Latency is a separate setting

Latency is the delay between capture at the encoder or camera and playback for viewers. YouTube notes that choosing lower latency can mean more buffering. It is a separate decision from the bitrate table; changing latency does not change which codec-specific bitrate row applies. See YouTube’s latency guidance.

Common problems and fixes

  • Stream health warns about bitrate or drops: check upload speed and stability, confirm that total stream bitrate fits available upload capacity with headroom, and verify the encoder is using the intended output settings.
  • The encoder’s bitrate does not match the source file: this is not necessarily a problem. The table applies to outgoing ingestion settings, not the prerecorded file’s export rate. Confirm the stream output codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  • You are using the minimum and expecting the recommended setting: minimum and recommended figures are different. For 1080p30, the recommended rate is 14 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for H.265/AV1.
  • Viewers report buffering despite a suitable bitrate: inspect stream health and connection stability, and consider whether the selected latency mode is contributing to buffering. A bitrate recommendation does not eliminate network or playback issues.
  • The keyframe interval is longer than YouTube’s guidance: set it to two seconds and do not exceed four seconds.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo streams the uploaded video at the quality it was made, up to 4K 60fps, with one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers; it does not re-encode. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
