To schedule separate media playlists on a VPS, give each YouTube channel its own channel authorization, incoming stream, OBS configuration and playlist, then schedule each broadcast independently. You also need a scheduler or an operator to launch the correct OBS configuration at the right time: OBS provides launch options, but its documentation does not describe a complete per-channel calendar scheduler.
Here, “playlist” means the ordered video files your encoder plays during a live stream—not a YouTube video playlist. A scheduled YouTube broadcast is a separate viewer-facing event, while a YouTube live stream is the incoming audio/video feed. Keep those three pieces distinct as you build the setup.
Plan one isolated setup per channel
For each channel, pair its YouTube authorization and liveStream with its own scheduled liveBroadcast, OBS profile and scene collection, media playlist, and output settings. Google says multiple channels need a different liveStream for each channel. A channel may reuse its own stream for recurring events, but do not reuse one channel’s stream resource as the feed for another channel.
This separation makes it easier to verify which playlist, credentials and encoder settings belong to a broadcast. It also prevents a common conceptual mix-up: YouTube’s ordinary video-playlist feature does not automatically select files for an encoder or schedule different live sources per channel.

Check channel eligibility and stream limits
Before configuring the VPS, confirm that each channel can go live. YouTube Help states that the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube Help, accessed in 2026, also states limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; both limits apply. See YouTube Help on live streaming.
Decide how broadcasts will be scheduled: manually in YouTube Studio, or programmatically using the YouTube Live Streaming API. API requests need authorization for the channel concerned. The content-owner delegation route is intended for eligible YouTube content partners, not as a general shortcut for managing unrelated channels.

Choose how to schedule broadcasts
| Approach | What it does | Best fit | Operational consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio | Lets an operator manage scheduled live streams in the channel’s Studio. | A workflow where a person can create and check each event. | Schedule and associate each event with the correct channel stream; the VPS still needs a process to start its matching encoder. |
| YouTube Live Streaming API | Can create scheduled broadcasts with a title, start time and privacy status, then associate the broadcast with the appropriate stream. | Repeated or unattended event creation where you are prepared to implement and maintain API authorization and automation. | Authorize requests for the relevant channel and handle the association between each broadcast and that channel’s stream. |
Neither approach removes the need to coordinate the encoder. Choose based on how many channels and events you manage, whether scheduling must be unattended, and whether you can operate API authorization and recovery logic. The available documentation does not establish a universally better option.
Build the channel-specific OBS configurations
- Install OBS and VLC on the VPS. OBS’s VLC video source requires VLC to be installed; without it, the source may not appear. Use a VPS environment that can run the chosen encoder continuously and access the local media files.
- Create a separate profile and scene collection for each channel. Set that channel’s stream credentials and output settings in its own configuration. OBS supports selecting a profile and scene collection at launch, which provides building blocks for isolating channels.
- Add that channel’s media playlist. Add an OBS VLC video source, select the channel’s files in the intended order, and set loop or shuffle behavior as needed. For a source that plays an individual local file rather than a playlist, OBS’s Media Source is an alternative.
- Set and verify output settings for the actual stream. Match the output resolution and bitrate to your intended broadcast and the available host capacity. The official material here does not prescribe universal bitrate, resolution, CPU, memory or GPU values for a multi-channel VPS; they depend on the number of simultaneous feeds and whether the host encodes or relays the media. Do not treat an arbitrary VPS specification as a tested sizing recommendation.
- Keep each channel’s stream key and feed matched. Check that the active OBS configuration sends its feed to the stream belonging to the intended YouTube channel. Store credentials carefully and avoid selecting the wrong profile when launching an event.
OBS documents launch options including --startstreaming and options to select a profile and scene collection. Use an external scheduler or orchestration layer to launch the correct configuration at the scheduled time; the OBS launch options are not themselves a per-channel calendar scheduler. Refer to OBS documentation for source and launch-option details.

Connect each encoder run to its YouTube event
- Create or select a live stream for each channel. In Studio or through the API, work in the account and channel that should receive that feed.
- Schedule the broadcast separately. Create the event with the correct title, start time and privacy status. Associate it with that channel’s stream.
- Configure the scheduler. At the event time, have your external scheduler start the matching OBS profile and scene collection with streaming enabled. Keep the event-to-profile mapping explicit—for example, in a maintained schedule that identifies channel, broadcast, profile and playlist.
- Confirm the YouTube preview and ingest state. Before relying on the schedule, verify the incoming feed appears on the intended event and that video and audio are present.
Test each channel, then test simultaneous runs
- Run a test for every channel separately. Confirm the event, stream key, OBS profile and playlist all belong together.
- Check file order, loop or shuffle behavior, audio, and the expected video format in YouTube’s preview.
- Test the scheduler’s start behavior and what happens if an encoder process stops or YouTube interrupts the feed. Define how an operator or orchestration layer detects and restarts a failed run; do not assume a calendar entry alone handles recovery.
- Run the number of streams you expect to operate at the same time, then check host load and feed stability. YouTube’s active-stream limits apply alongside the VPS’s own capacity.
Use HLS only when your encoder and workflow require it
The usual workflow described here does not require HLS. If you deliberately use YouTube HLS ingestion, the encoder must support HLS and meet YouTube’s protocol requirements: HTTPS, TS segments, segment durations from 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and no byte ranges. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The live source does not appear in OBS. | VLC is not installed on the VPS. | Install VLC and reopen OBS, then check for the VLC video source. |
| A broadcast gets the wrong playlist or channel feed. | The scheduler launched the wrong profile or the broadcast is associated with the wrong stream. | Check the event-to-channel mapping, selected OBS profile and scene collection, stream key, and YouTube preview. |
| The feed arrives but the playlist order or repeat behavior is wrong. | The VLC source list or its loop/shuffle settings do not match the intended playback. | Open the channel’s OBS configuration and verify the file list, order, loop and shuffle controls. |
| A channel cannot start a live stream. | The channel may not meet YouTube’s eligibility rules or may have a live-stream restriction. | Check verification and the channel’s restriction status in YouTube, including the preceding 90-day eligibility condition. |
| A stream cannot be started despite a valid setup. | An active-stream limit may be reached, or the VPS may not sustain the concurrent workload. | Check active streams for the channel and stream key, then test host load with the expected simultaneous streams. |
| An HLS feed is rejected or delayed. | The encoder may not meet YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements; HLS also has higher latency than RTMP. | Verify HTTPS, TS segments, 1–4 second segment duration, rolling playlist limit, and absence of byte ranges. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining a VPS, scheduler and separate encoder configurations is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; your computer does not need to stay on. It plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
