To go live on YouTube, verify your channel, make sure it has no live-streaming restrictions from the past 90 days, and enable live streaming before your event. Then choose the simplest route for your content: mobile for quick updates, a webcam for a simple computer-based stream, an encoder for gameplay or screen sharing, or a supported console for console gameplay. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so don’t leave setup until the last minute.

What do you need to go live on YouTube?

Start with a YouTube channel in good standing for live streaming, a device suited to your content, and an internet connection with enough upload capacity. You do not need expensive equipment to begin: YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” An external microphone or webcam can improve a particular setup, but neither is a universal requirement.

  • Channel eligibility: verify the channel and check that it has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  • Age: YouTube’s general live-streaming help page sets a minimum age of 16.
  • Internet: check upload speed, not just download speed, and leave bandwidth headroom for the stream.
  • Time: enable live streaming in advance; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.

Requirements can depend on the streaming method and account circumstances. Check YouTube Studio and its current live-streaming guidance for your channel’s status before planning an event.

Choose the right way to stream

Method Best for What you need to know
Mobile Vlogging and quick updates from your phone Mobile streaming has additional eligibility requirements, including at least 50 subscribers, plus channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
Webcam A straightforward talking stream from a computer Use a computer with a webcam. YouTube describes this as a quick way to stream from a computer.
Encoder Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external audio/video gear Encoder software or hardware sends your audio and video to YouTube. Plan and test the setup before the event.
Console Gameplay from a supported modern console YouTube says modern PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles can stream directly. Follow the console maker’s instructions.

For a first stream, pick the least complicated option that supports what you want to show. A webcam is enough for a simple computer-based conversation; gameplay capture, screen sharing, and layered production are reasons to use an encoder instead.

Prepare your channel and stream

  1. Verify your channel and check eligibility. Confirm the channel has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s official starting point is Get started with live streaming.
  2. Enable live streaming ahead of time. Follow YouTube’s current steps for your chosen method. First activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned start.
  3. Choose visibility deliberately. Select public, unlisted, or private as appropriate. For a personal stream where privacy matters, YouTube recommends private or unlisted settings.
  4. Connect and check your devices. If you are using an encoder, select the intended camera, microphone, and other inputs. Incorrect device or encoder setup can cause technical problems.
  5. Do a representative test. Include the movement and audio you expect in the real stream. Check the preview and stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room before you start.

How do I stream gameplay or share my screen?

Use an encoder when your stream needs gameplay or desktop capture, overlays, or external audio/video hardware. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to create a stream with an encoder. Set up your inputs, confirm the correct microphone and video source are selected, and test the finished signal before the event.

For a custom encoder setup, YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. The recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult the live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the mode you plan to use.

For example, YouTube currently lists 14 Mbps as its H.264 recommendation for 1080p at 30 fps, compared with 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at that mode. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular encoder or internet connection can sustain the stream.

How much upload speed do you need?

Your stream’s total bitrate must stay below the upload bandwidth actually available to it. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom beyond the stream’s bitrate needs. Available capacity may be lower than your plan’s advertised speed, may fluctuate, and may be shared with other devices or people. Upload speed can also be lower than download speed, so check the right measure.

Use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate as a starting point, then test on the connection you will use. If stream health is poor or the picture breaks up, reduce the stream’s bitrate or resolution, reduce competing network use, or move to a more reliable connection.

Test the viewer experience before going live

  • Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before starting.
  • Test sound as well as picture; confirm the selected microphone is the one you intend to use.
  • Use movement and audio representative of the real stream, rather than testing only a static screen.
  • Verify that the event appears and can be opened from the expected channel or watch page, including on a mobile device.
  • During the stream, keep an eye on audio and video quality and respond to stream-health problems.

Protect your privacy and follow YouTube’s rules

Before going live, check what your camera can see and what your microphone can pick up. Avoid revealing personal information on-screen, aloud, or in live chat. Give channel administrative access only to people you trust, and use YouTube’s tools to report or block chat users who make viewers uncomfortable. Community rules apply to live video and live chat.

Copyright and other policy issues can affect live content. Use material you have the rights to stream, and check YouTube’s current rules rather than assuming that a recording, game soundtrack, or other on-screen content is automatically permitted. If your channel has an active live-streaming restriction, check YouTube Studio and the official restrictions guidance for the account-specific explanation; do not try to evade a restriction by switching to another channel.

Troubleshooting common first-stream problems

Problem Likely cause What to try
You cannot start a live stream The channel is not verified, has a live-streaming restriction, or live streaming has not finished activating. Check channel status and YouTube Studio, then enable live streaming in advance. Initial activation can take up to 24 hours.
The mobile live option is unavailable The channel may not meet mobile eligibility requirements. Check YouTube’s current mobile requirements, including its 50-subscriber threshold, verification, and restriction status. See Create a live stream on mobile.
The video stutters or stream health is poor The stream bitrate may be too close to available upload capacity, or the network may be busy or unstable. Check upload bandwidth, leave the recommended headroom, reduce competing network traffic, or lower bitrate or resolution. Re-test before the event.
The stream has no sound or the wrong picture The encoder may be using the wrong microphone, camera, or capture source. Check the selected input devices and confirm the desired audio and video appear in the preview before starting.
Viewers cannot find or open the event Visibility may be set to private or unlisted, or the event may not be appearing where expected. Check the visibility setting and verify access from the channel or watch page, including on a phone.
