To improve HDR live video, preserve real HDR from source to stream: start with a camera or game outputting HDR in PQ or HLG, encode it as 10-bit HEVC/H.265 with correct color signaling, and send it at a bitrate your upload connection can sustain. Then verify the result on an HDR-capable device. These settings below are specific to YouTube Live; other platforms may require different formats and settings.
How to stream HDR on YouTube Live
YouTube’s requirement is straightforward: “You need to produce compatible HDR content and use a compatible encoder.” HDR is a signal chain, not a switch that turns ordinary SDR footage into genuine HDR. YouTube’s guidance for non-gaming camera video calls for an HDR-capable camera using PQ or HLG; check the camera manual to confirm that it can record or output HDR in one of those formats. For games, confirm the game’s HDR output and the capture/display path you use.
- Confirm the source. Ensure the camera output or game capture is genuinely HDR and determine whether its transfer function is PQ or HLG. Keep that information available when configuring the encoder.
- Use a compatible encoding path. YouTube Live HDR uses HEVC/H.265 and 10-bit video. In YouTube’s OBS instructions, the described RTMP workflow requires OBS 30.1 or later and a hardware HEVC encoder. The specified settings are Main 10, P010 (4:2:0), and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG; YouTube recommends HLG in those instructions.
- Preserve the source’s color information. Do not select PQ or HLG arbitrarily: the transfer function must reflect the source. For YouTube HLS HDR, the specification calls for 10-bit YUV 4:2:0, PQ or HLG, Rec. 2020 primaries, and a Rec. 2020 non-constant-luminance matrix.
- Choose delivery settings and test the connection. Match codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, then run an upload speed test. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency, with keyframes no more than 4 seconds apart. It generally recommends RTMPS; for HDR, H.265 over RTMP(S) is recommended. HLS is an option when the encoder does not support HDR over that route.
- Check the stream’s health and playback. Use YouTube’s stream diagnostics, then test playback on an HDR-capable device and look for the HDR label in the quality menu.
For the OBS workflow described by YouTube, the Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors. Do not use that preview alone to decide whether the delivered picture is HDR.
What bitrate do you need for 1080p or 4K live streaming?
YouTube’s recommended bitrate table distinguishes AV1/H.265 from H.264. These are YouTube platform recommendations accessed October 3, 2026, not universal quality thresholds or guarantees; real results depend on the content and whether your connection can sustain the upload. The following figures are in Mbps.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 minimum | AV1 or H.265 recommended | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4K / 2160p at 60 fps | 10 | 35 | 50 |
| 4K / 2160p at 30 fps | 8 | 30 | 42 |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 6 | 24 | 34 |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 5 | 15 | 21 |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 | 12 | 17 |
For HDR, use the AV1/H.265 column only when your HDR path is actually using the supported codec and format; YouTube Live HDR requires HEVC/H.265 and 10-bit video. H.264 figures are included as YouTube’s corresponding recommendations, but H.264 is not the HDR encoding path specified in YouTube’s HDR guidance.
Test upload capacity under realistic conditions, preferably while other household or office network use is occurring. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” If your connection cannot sustain the chosen upload, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, or improve the connection rather than pushing a higher-quality setting that causes unstable delivery.

Why does an HDR live stream look washed out?
A washed-out or otherwise incorrect image can result when the source, encoder, and stream metadata disagree. Check the signal chain in order rather than assuming the platform has simply failed to apply an HDR toggle.
- SDR source presented as HDR: An HDR setting cannot establish that camera footage is genuinely HDR. Confirm PQ or HLG support and output in the camera manual, or verify HDR output from the game and capture path.
- Wrong transfer function: If the source is PQ, do not label it HLG, or vice versa. The encoder’s transfer setting must match the source.
- Incorrect bit depth, codec, or color signaling: For YouTube HDR, check HEVC/H.265, 10-bit, and the appropriate format. YouTube’s HLS HDR specification additionally specifies 4:2:0 YUV, Rec. 2020 primaries, and a Rec. 2020 non-constant-luminance matrix.
- Judging from an unsuitable preview or display: YouTube’s Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors in the described OBS workflow. Confirm on a known HDR-capable playback device instead.
How can you tell if a YouTube live stream is actually HDR?
Check playback on a device known to support HDR and open YouTube’s quality menu. YouTube says supported devices display HDR automatically, and the quality menu shows an HDR badge. Devices that do not support HDR receive the stream in SDR, so SDR playback on an incompatible display does not by itself prove the broadcast was sent as SDR.

For a reliable check, verify both sides: the encoder is sending the intended HEVC 10-bit PQ or HLG signal, and a compatible playback device identifies the received stream as HDR. Treat the Live Control Room preview separately because it does not show HDR colors for the workflow described in YouTube’s instructions.
Use YouTube’s health diagnostics to separate picture problems from delivery problems
HDR format and color handling affect the image; upload capacity and encoder health affect whether viewers receive it smoothly. YouTube’s stream health indicators can report configuration problems such as low bitrate and frame-rate mismatch. Ingestion starvation can lead to buffering. Address the reported fault rather than changing HDR settings when the issue is delivery stability.

- Soft or blocky picture: Check the active codec and bitrate against YouTube’s recommendations for the selected resolution and frame rate. Verify that the encoder is not outputting a lower-quality signal than intended.
- Stuttering or buffering: Check whether the upload is sustainable and whether YouTube reports low bitrate or ingestion starvation. Reduce the target or fix the connection if necessary.
- Frame-rate mismatch: Make the source and encoder frame rates agree, then inspect stream health again.
- Unexpected HDR appearance: Recheck PQ/HLG selection, bit depth, codec, and color metadata, then validate on an HDR playback device.
Choose a setup around your source, connection, and viewers
Before choosing a camera or encoder, compare the capabilities that determine whether the entire path will work. YouTube’s 4K/2160 streams are optimized for quality at normal latency; low-latency optimization is unavailable at that resolution.
- Source and encoder: Confirm PQ or HLG output and HEVC Main 10 support; for camera-based streams, verify HDR support in the camera manual.
- Target: Pick the resolution and frame rate your source, encoder, and upload can sustain together.
- Delivery protocol: Use RTMP(S) where the encoder supports the recommended H.265 HDR workflow. YouTube HLS is an alternative when the encoder does not support HDR there, but it has its own format requirements.
- Latency: Consider the trade-off between latency needs and resolution; YouTube does not offer low-latency optimization for 4K/2160 streams.
- Audience playback: HDR presentation depends on viewers having compatible playback devices; other devices receive SDR.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does HDR help if my viewers use SDR screens?
YouTube serves SDR to devices that do not support HDR; the HDR benefit is visible only on compatible playback equipment.
Can a regular SDR recording become genuine HDR by changing encoder settings?
No. The source itself must contain HDR, and the encoding path must preserve its PQ or HLG signal.
