Why OBS Shows a Black Screen When Streaming a Prerecorded File to YouTube Live

A black YouTube stream can originate in OBS’s scene, file playback, encoding, or delivery. Compare OBS preview, a local recording, and YouTube output to find the failing stage.

If OBS’s preview is black, start with the scene and its local video source: confirm the intended scene is active, the Media Source is visible, the right file is playing, and no higher source covers it. If the OBS preview and a local recording look correct but YouTube Live is black, check the encoder output, YouTube’s live dashboard, and your outbound connection instead. The goal is to find where the picture disappears before changing settings.

First, identify where the picture disappears

Compare three views: the OBS preview, a short local recording made in OBS, and YouTube’s live preview. OBS’s preview shows what its scene is compositing; the local recording helps check what OBS produced; YouTube’s preview shows what arrived at the platform. This comparison is a diagnostic method based on YouTube’s recommendation to inspect the encoder and a local archive, not proof of any single cause.

  • OBS preview is black: investigate the selected scene, source, visibility, layering, transform, and file playback first.
  • OBS preview is right but the local recording is black: investigate OBS’s output and encoding path.
  • OBS preview and local recording are right, but YouTube is black: inspect YouTube’s live dashboard for encoder errors and check CPU load and the outbound connection.

YouTube Help advises: “Check the look and sound of your stream directly in the encoder.” It also recommends reviewing a local archive and testing the outbound Internet connection when the encoder output looks healthy. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide has the platform’s checks.

Use the right OBS source for a prerecorded file

For a video stored on your computer, add a Media Source to the scene. OBS describes the source this way: “Media Sources Add audio/video files to a scene.” A display, window, game, or video-capture source is for capturing a screen, application or game, or external device; it is not inherently required to play a local file. See the OBS Project’s Sources Guide.

Setup path Use it for First checks
Media Source A prerecorded local video or audio file File selection and playback, visibility, source order, position, and crop
Display, Window, Game, or Video Capture source A screen, application or game window, or external video device Correct capture type and target; on some multi-GPU laptops, GPU assignment may matter

Check the scene and Media Source

Confirm the active scene and source

  1. In OBS, select the scene you intend to send to YouTube and inspect its preview. A different active scene can produce a black output even if another scene contains the video.
  2. In the Sources list, confirm that the Media Source containing the file is present and enabled. The eye control toggles source visibility.
  3. Select the Media Source and verify that the expected file is selected and playback is advancing. If the audio meter moves but the picture stays black, that narrows the fault toward the visual source or rendering path; it does not by itself identify the cause.

Check layering, position, size, and crop

  1. Look at the order of sources. A source higher in OBS’s Sources list is drawn above lower sources and can cover them. Temporarily hide other sources to see whether the video appears.
  2. Select the Media Source and inspect its bounding box in the canvas. It may be outside the visible area or reduced to an unusable size.
  3. Inspect its transform and crop. A crop or position that removes the useful part of the picture can make a working source look blank. OBS documents source ordering, visibility, and transform controls in its Sources Guide.

Verify the file and playback

Check that OBS is pointed at the intended file and that playback is active. If the file is not advancing, select the correct file and start or restart playback as appropriate for the source’s settings. Do not assume a codec incompatibility from a black picture alone; check the file and OBS log before settling on that explanation.

If OBS looks correct but YouTube does not

  1. Make sure the encoder software is current, then inspect picture and sound directly in OBS.
  2. Review the YouTube live dashboard for reported encoder errors and check whether the computer is under heavy CPU load.
  3. Review a local recording of the stream. If it is also wrong, continue investigating OBS or its output; if it looks right, focus on delivery from the computer to YouTube.
  4. Test the strength and stability of the outbound Internet connection, as YouTube recommends when the encoder output is healthy.
  5. If a third-party encoder reports an error starting the stream, YouTube suggests trying a new stream key. This is guidance for that start-error situation, not a universal fix for a black picture.

Follow the checks in YouTube Help’s troubleshooting guide; changing a stream key before locating the failure can distract from a local scene or playback issue.

When GPU assignment is relevant

GPU selection is worth considering when the problem involves capturing a display, game, or application window on a laptop with more than one GPU. OBS’s laptop guidance says Display Capture may call for OBS to use the integrated GPU, while Game or Window Capture may call for the discrete GPU. That guidance was last modified on 2019-11-23 and concerns capture methods; it does not establish GPU reassignment as a general fix for a local Media Source. See the OBS Project’s laptop troubleshooting guide for that bounded case.

Common black-screen symptoms and what to check

What you see What it points toward Next check
OBS preview is black Scene, source, visibility, layering, transform, or playback Confirm the intended scene and Media Source, then check eye control, stacking, canvas position, crop, and file playback
The source is enabled, but another image covers it Source order Hide higher sources temporarily or move the Media Source above them
Audio is present but video is not Visual source or rendering path; the symptom alone does not isolate a cause Check the file, source state, transform, and OBS log
OBS preview is right, but local recording is black OBS output or encoding path Check OBS output and encoding rather than changing YouTube settings first
OBS preview and local recording are right, but YouTube is black Encoder-to-platform delivery or a YouTube-reported error Inspect the dashboard, encoder errors, CPU load, and outbound connection
Only a display, game, or window capture is black on a multi-GPU laptop Potential capture-method/GPU assignment mismatch Apply OBS’s laptop guidance to that capture method; do not generalize it to file playback

Do you need to buy anything?

A local prerecorded-file black screen is not, by itself, a reason to buy a capture card, GPU, cable, or standalone media player. OBS assigns Media Sources to local files and capture devices to video-device capture; its and YouTube’s documented troubleshooting is diagnostic. OBS’s Help Portal says OBS is open source under GPLv2, free for any use, usable commercially, and has no advertisements or bundled adware: OBS Help Portal.
