For a quick game or app clip on Windows, start with Xbox Game Bar. Choose OBS Studio when you need more control over capture and are willing to tune its settings. Bandicam is another option, but check its system requirements for your PC before installing. None is guaranteed to record smoothly on every low-end computer: the result depends on the hardware, encoder, resolution, frame rate, capture method, and what is happening on screen.
Which recorder should you choose?

Why “low-end PC” does not identify a universal winner
A minimum requirement only indicates a compatibility floor; it cannot promise smooth recording of a specific game, desktop, or scene. OBS explains that CPU demands vary with the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A demanding game may already be using most of the computer’s available resources, leaving less capacity for recording.
The official OBS Windows requirements page lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as basic requirements. Those requirements do not establish a minimum frame rate or guarantee performance for a specific PC or game. See OBS Studio’s system requirements.
Set up Xbox Game Bar for a quick clip
- Open the game or app you want to record in Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Press Win+Alt+R to start recording. Press the same shortcut to stop.
- Find the resulting MP4 in VideosCaptures.
This is a practical first try when you only need a clip and the app works with Game Bar. If the recording is choppy or the capture workflow does not suit the app, try another method rather than assuming a different recorder will automatically solve a hardware bottleneck. Configure OBS Studio for a modest workload
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use it as a starting point, then judge the result by recording the actual game or app you intend to capture.
- Begin with a lower resolution and frame rate. Higher output settings require more work; increase them only if the PC records reliably and the result needs more detail or motion smoothness.
- Choose an encoder the PC can handle. Hardware encoding may be available through an integrated or discrete GPU, but support depends on the hardware and whether OBS can use it. Do not assume a hardware encoder is available or automatically selected.
- Keep scenes and overlays simple. Extra sources and effects add complexity. Start with only the capture source you need and add elements one at a time.
- Make a test recording under real conditions. Capture the same game, scene, and workload you plan to record; check playback for dropped or uneven frames before committing to a long session.
OBS says encoder choice, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity all affect CPU requirements. Its compatibility guidance also cautions that meeting system requirements does not guarantee the PC can record a particular workload. OBS system requirements and guidance.
Check GPU assignment on laptops
Some laptops have integrated and discrete GPUs. OBS documents that capture or performance problems can occur when OBS and the game are assigned to different GPUs. Check Windows graphics settings and verify that the game and OBS are assigned appropriately for your setup; then test capture again. OBS laptop troubleshooting guidance.

What Bandicam’s requirements do—and do not—tell you
Bandicam’s published system-requirements page lists a dual-core processor or better and 4 GB RAM in its minimum column. Its recommended configuration lists at least 20 GB of storage and an SSD. These are Bandicam’s vendor-published requirements, not results from a controlled comparison with OBS or Game Bar, and they do not promise smooth recording on a given PC.
Bandicam’s guidance suggests lowering resolution or trying windowed mode where appropriate to reduce lag. Check the current requirements against your particular PC and workload before choosing it. Bandicam system requirements and downloads.

Troubleshoot lag, stutter, or failed capture
- Recording is choppy: Lower resolution and frame rate, remove unnecessary overlays or sources, and test again. If the game itself is demanding, reduce its workload as well.
- Full-screen capture performs poorly: Where the app supports it, try recording a window instead. Bandicam also suggests trying windowed mode.
- OBS cannot capture the game reliably on a laptop: Check whether Windows has assigned OBS and the game to different GPUs. Adjust their graphics settings and retest.
- The recording drive is nearly full: Free space or select a drive with adequate capacity. Storage capacity and drive performance affect saving recordings; an SSD does not, by itself, fix an overloaded CPU or make an unsupported hardware encoder usable.
- A settings change makes things worse: Return to a modest resolution and frame rate, simplify the scene, and change one setting at a time. Keep a short test recording after each adjustment so you can identify which change helped.
Compare the workload, not just the software name
Before settling on a recorder, consider what you need to capture and what your PC can sustain. A short game clip has different demands from a long tutorial with several sources or a layered scene.
- Task: Decide whether you need a quick game or app clip, a longer desktop recording, or a multi-source setup.
- Control: Game Bar offers a simpler built-in workflow; OBS provides configurable sources and scenes that require more setup.
- Encoding: Check whether your integrated or discrete GPU has a usable hardware encoder and whether the recorder can access it.
- Workload: Resolution, frame rate, overlays, scene complexity, and the game’s own demands all affect recording load.
- Compatibility: Confirm Windows and graphics support, GPU assignment, and whether the game or app permits the capture method you plan to use.
- Storage: Make sure the recording destination has enough room. Storage is a separate concern from whether the PC can encode video smoothly.
