To show alerts and widgets on a YouTube Live broadcast, configure them with an overlay provider, then add the provider’s overlay URL to OBS as a Browser source. YouTube is the destination, OBS is the broadcast canvas, and the provider supplies the alert and widget content. You do not need an OBS plugin for this basic setup.
What you need before setting up alerts
- A YouTube channel that can livestream. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the creator must be at least 16.
- Broadcast software such as OBS Studio, configured for an encoder stream. YouTube describes encoder streaming as a common choice when a broadcast needs overlays and production equipment.
- An overlay provider that supports the events and widgets you want. OBS’s official alert tutorial names StreamElements and Streamlabs as examples, not as the only options.
If Live Control Room is unavailable to your channel, resolve YouTube’s eligibility requirements before troubleshooting OBS or an overlay.
Choose an overlay workflow
For a typical setup, the workflow is provider → overlay URL → OBS scene → Browser source. Compare providers by whether they support the events you want to display on YouTube, what built-in widgets they offer, how you customize alert appearances, and how easily you can test and reuse overlays. StreamElements documents an editor that can combine alerts, chat, labels, goals, and custom widgets into one overlay rendered by a single Browser source.
Provider features and editor layouts can change. Check the provider’s current documentation for the exact controls in its interface. This guide uses StreamElements as a documented example, not a requirement.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create an overlay in StreamElements
- Open the Overlays area. Create a new overlay and choose a canvas resolution. Match your broadcast canvas if you want the overlay to fill it; choose a smaller canvas if you plan to position the overlay as a smaller element in OBS.
- Add the elements you need. Add an AlertBox for event alerts, or add widgets such as chat, labels, goals, or a Custom Widget. Multiple elements can be grouped into the same overlay.
- Configure the appearance and events. Set the alert or widget appearance and the events it should respond to using the provider’s editor. Check provider settings for any alert sounds, animations, or event variations you want.
- Copy the overlay URL. Keep it private if it grants access to a personal overlay; use the provider’s sharing controls rather than posting it publicly.
StreamElements also documents a YouTube-oriented setup through its SE.Live add-on: connect the YouTube account, choose a YouTube theme, configure AlertBox settings, copy the overlay URL, and add it to a Browser source. That specific SE.Live tutorial, published May 8, 2025, describes OBS v31.x or newer. Its version requirement applies to that add-on workflow, not to the general OBS Browser-source method below.
Add the overlay to an OBS scene
- Select the target scene. In OBS, choose the scene where the alerts or widgets should appear. If you use different scenes for gameplay, intermission, or other layouts, add the source to each scene where it is needed.
- Add a Browser source. In the Sources panel, select +, choose Browser, and create a new source.
- Paste the overlay URL. Enter the URL copied from the provider. Set the Browser source width and height to fit the overlay design and canvas. For a 1080p canvas, 1920 × 1080 is an example—not a universal requirement.
- Place it in the scene. Position and resize the source as needed. In the Sources list, move it above any background layers that would otherwise cover it.
- Check source visibility. Make sure the source’s visibility is enabled in the scene and that the scene is the one you intend to use on air.
The overlay Browser source is part of your OBS production scene; it is not the same as YouTube’s watch-page live chat. YouTube says Live Chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players.

Test the overlay before going live
- Use the provider’s test-alert feature, if available, to generate a preview event.
- Confirm the alert or widget appears in the intended OBS scene, at the right size and position.
- Check that the Browser source is visible and sits above the relevant scene layers.
- Review the provider’s alert state and any event filters so the events you expect are not muted or paused.
Do this display check before starting the broadcast. A correctly configured overlay in the provider’s editor can still be hidden, incorrectly sized, or placed in the wrong OBS scene.
Troubleshoot missing or broken overlays
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing appears in OBS | The overlay URL, its resolution, and the source’s visibility in the selected scene. | Verify the URL in the provider, check the overlay resolution, and confirm the Browser source is visible in the scene. StreamElements also recommends checking whether alerts are muted or paused in the activity feed. |
| Alerts do not trigger | The provider’s alert state and event configuration. | Check that the relevant events are enabled and that activity-feed alerts are not muted or paused. Use a provider test alert if available. |
| The overlay is clipped, too large, or too small | The overlay canvas dimensions and the OBS Browser source width and height. | Set dimensions that fit the overlay and broadcast canvas, then reposition or resize the source in OBS. |
| The overlay stutters or renders incorrectly | The OBS Browser Source hardware-acceleration setting. | StreamElements’ troubleshooting guidance suggests trying the Browser Source hardware-acceleration setting in OBS. Change it, then check the overlay again. |
| The overlay appears in one scene but not another | Whether the Browser source was added to the scene currently being shown. | Add or reuse the source in the scene where it is needed, and check its visibility there. |
Keep YouTube features separate from overlay setup
Super Chat, Super Stickers, channel memberships, and ads are YouTube live-stream revenue features subject to YouTube eligibility and channel settings. They are not prerequisites for displaying an overlay or widget. Likewise, a visual alert in OBS and a YouTube platform feature are distinct: the overlay is rendered in your production scene, while access to a YouTube monetization feature depends on the channel.

Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo serves a different purpose from an alert provider: it keeps an uploaded video or playlist streaming to YouTube, rather than generating alerts or widgets. You can still use an overlay provider and OBS for a broadcast you produce yourself. For an always-on prerecorded stream, StreamNeo’s steps are upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card.
