If the Wowza application requires source authentication, enter its source username and password. Start streaming and confirm that the incoming stream is active in Wowza Streaming Engine Manager.
What you need from Wowza
Before configuring vMix, have the connection details for the Wowza live application:
- The Wowza server host name or IP address.
- The RTMP port configured for the server’s VHost. Wowza’s default is TCP 1935, but the server configuration is authoritative.
- The live application name.
- The incoming stream name, which vMix will use as its stream key.
- The source username and password if source authentication is enabled.
Wowza documents the application connection URL pattern as rtmp://[wowza-ip-address]:[port]/[application-name]. Replace each bracketed value with the actual server details; do not include the stream name in this URL when entering it separately in vMix. Configure vMix to publish to Wowza
- Open the Streaming window. In vMix, select the cog beside the Stream button.
- Choose the destination type. Select Custom RTMP Server.
- Enter the Wowza application URL. Put the URL containing the Wowza host, configured port, and application name in the URL field.
- Enter the incoming stream name. Put the stream name supplied for the Wowza application in Stream Key. This field may also be called stream name or stream in other documentation.
- Set authentication if required. If source authentication is enabled, provide the Wowza source account username and password in the authentication fields available in your installed vMix release. These are publisher credentials, not viewer or playback credentials. Wowza says RTMP source credentials are required by default; check the application’s actual authentication settings.
- Choose the encoding profile and start. Select a quality profile appropriate to your production, available upload bandwidth, and receiving application, then start streaming.
vMix documents Wowza as a supported dedicated streaming server. The exact available fields can differ by release; check the installed version’s interface against the vMix Getting Started guide and vMix Streaming Settings documentation.

Choose encoding settings that fit the connection
There is no universal bitrate for every vMix-to-Wowza setup. Set the profile to suit the actual production and the receiving application’s requirements, while keeping the bitrate within the available uplink capacity. vMix exposes resolution, video bitrate, audio bitrate, codec, audio format, keyframe frequency, and other advanced options.

| Resolution | Use the production resolution the receiving application can accept and the upload connection can sustain. |
| Video bitrate | Choose a value appropriate to the resolution, motion, and available uplink; the correct value depends on the specific workflow. |
| Audio bitrate and format | Match the receiving application’s requirements. vMix’s guide identifies AAC as the audio option for FFMPEG. |
| Codec | H.264 is vMix’s default format in the documented settings. |
| Keyframe frequency | vMix recommends a two-second keyframe frequency. Treat this as its documented recommendation, not a guarantee that it is correct for every receiver. |

Confirm the stream is arriving
- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open the live application’s Incoming Streams view.
- Check that the published stream appears with Active status. Open its details to view uptime and network throughput.
- Use Wowza’s documented Test Playback option if you also need to check delivery.
- In vMix, open View Status for technical information about the outgoing stream.
These checks show both sides of the connection: vMix’s encoder status and Wowza’s received stream. Wowza’s RTMP encoder guide describes the Incoming Streams and playback checks; vMix’s settings guide documents View Status.
Troubleshoot a failed or inactive connection
- Connection is refused or times out: Confirm the host and configured RTMP port, then check that TCP traffic to that port is allowed through the firewall and network path. TCP 1935 is Wowza’s default, not a substitute for checking the deployed VHost configuration.
- Wowza does not show the stream: Recheck the application name in the URL and the stream name in vMix’s Stream Key field. Compare the URL pattern and application details with the connection information in Wowza Manager.
- Authentication fails: Verify that vMix has the Wowza source account credentials and that they are valid for the application. Do not substitute viewer or playback credentials.
- Wowza shows no active incoming stream after vMix starts: Compare vMix’s View Status information with the application’s Incoming Streams view. Recheck the URL, stream name, credentials, configured port, and network access.
- The stream connects but delivery is unsuitable: Review resolution, video and audio bitrates, codec, audio format, and keyframe frequency against the receiver’s requirements and your actual uplink. The sources do not establish one bitrate profile that fits every installation.
