Choose the kind of opening you need: edit an intro into an uploaded video, build an opening scene for a live broadcast in OBS, or add a trailer to the watch page of a scheduled YouTube livestream. They are different workflows. A useful opening quickly identifies the show when needed, tells viewers what this video or stream will deliver, and moves into the content.
Choose the right kind of YouTube intro
| Approach | Where viewers see it | Best for | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intro edited into an uploaded video | At the beginning of that finished video | A tailored spoken or visual opening, or repeatable branding | It must be included in the edit for each video or applied through your editing workflow. |
| OBS opening scene | During the live broadcast | A host welcome, waiting slate, rendered clip, or scene-based show opening | You need a working encoder setup and a reliable transition to the main scene. |
| YouTube scheduled-stream trailer | On the scheduled stream’s watch page before the event | Introducing an upcoming livestream before it begins | The feature has eligibility, duration, and rights requirements. |
A YouTube scheduled-stream trailer is not an intro automatically applied to every video, and it is not an OBS scene. YouTube’s trailer setup and requirements describe a separate feature for scheduled livestreams.
Write the opening before making graphics
Start with the promise of the specific video or event. A compact opening can cover three things:
- Identity: Say the channel or show name if it helps a new viewer know where they are.
- Value: State what this video, demonstration, or event will deliver.
- Transition: Begin the first useful step, scene, or conversation.
For example: “Welcome to [channel/show]. Today we’re [specific outcome]. I’ll show [the first step], then we’ll [what comes next]. Let’s start.” This is a writing template, not a required YouTube formula. For a livestream, Google’s Live Streaming Guide recommends opening remarks that establish the stream’s purpose and structure, then maintaining a structure that helps the community follow along.

Keep branding in service of the content
A logo animation, sound sting, montage, or title card is optional. Use one only if it helps viewers recognize or understand the show. The official sources cited here do not establish a universal ideal intro length or show that animated branding improves retention, so treat timing as an editorial choice rather than a proven performance rule.
Make an intro for an uploaded video
- Choose what the opening needs to say or show. It might be a voice line, relevant gameplay or footage, a title card, or a simple logo treatment. Avoid promising material the video does not deliver.
- Record or create the elements. Use your existing editing workflow; no special hardware or animated graphics are required.
- Place the intro at the start of the finished edit. Listen for clean audio transitions and narration that is easy to understand.
- Preview it at different viewing sizes. Check that the text is legible on a small screen as well as at your intended viewing size.
- Move into the subject promptly. Make sure the opening helps viewers orient themselves rather than delaying the promised content.
YouTube’s scheduled-stream trailer feature can use a normal uploaded video as its trailer asset, but it has separate eligibility and duration requirements; it is not a general channel-wide intro setting. See YouTube’s trailer instructions.

Make a live opening in OBS
In OBS, use a distinct scene for the opening and a separate scene for the main program. A scene can contain a rendered intro video or a combination of sources such as an image, text, webcam, and other media. The OBS Quick Start Guide covers adding sources and encourages testing before a first stream.
- Create an opening scene. In OBS, add a scene for your welcome, waiting slate, or intro clip.
- Add the sources you need. Add a video source for a rendered clip, or combine image, text, webcam, and other sources for a live opening.
- Create the main-program scene separately. This makes it straightforward to switch from the opening to gameplay, discussion, or the event itself.
- Check sound and picture. Confirm the selected audio devices and watch the audio meters while testing your sources.
- Rehearse the transition. Make sure you can switch scenes cleanly and that the main scene is ready when the opening ends.
- Test before broadcasting. OBS recommends a short test recording or stream before your first show. Google’s streaming checklist also advises checking the connection, camera framing, audio capture, and lighting in advance, including with a private stream.
When you speak, greet viewers, explain what is planned and the order of any segments, then start the promised activity. If you are new to livestreaming, check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance before choosing a broadcast route. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console options; an encoder is useful for layouts with gameplay or overlays and equipment such as microphones, cameras, and preamps. Its current guidance also describes horizontal and vertical live formats, so check the latest Live Control Room behavior if your layout depends on a particular format.

Add a trailer to a scheduled YouTube livestream
A trailer plays for viewers on the scheduled stream’s watch page before the event starts. It is a separate YouTube feature, not a clip that OBS automatically plays at the start of a broadcast.
- Upload the trailer as a regular YouTube video. The trailer must be between 15 seconds and 3 minutes.
- Schedule the livestream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and use the Manage tab to schedule the stream.
- Edit the scheduled stream. Open its settings, choose Customize, add the trailer, and save.
- Check the watch page and asset. YouTube recommends matching the scheduled event’s aspect ratio and resolution. Make sure you have the rights to the trailer’s audio and video.
YouTube’s current trailer guidance says this feature requires more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. Platform eligibility and interface labels can change, so verify the Help page when setting up an event. Do not confuse this trailer feature with a historical channel-wide “branding intro” described in a 2014 YouTube Blog post; that old post does not establish that its feature remains available.

Check rights before using music or footage
Use music, clips, graphics, and other audio or video only when you have the appropriate rights. YouTube explicitly notes rights requirements for scheduled-stream trailers in its trailer guidance. This matters whether the material appears in an uploaded-video intro, an OBS opening clip, or a trailer.
Troubleshoot a weak or broken opening
- The opening feels disconnected from the video. Rewrite the value statement around the actual subject and promised outcome, then remove unrelated montage or branding.
- Text or graphics are hard to read. Preview the edit at a small-screen size and simplify the title card or increase the clarity of its text.
- OBS audio is missing or unclear. Confirm the chosen audio device and watch the OBS meters during a test; check capture and levels before going live.
- The live transition is awkward. Keep the opening and main program in separate scenes, then rehearse switching between them before the broadcast.
- The YouTube trailer option is unavailable. Check whether the channel meets YouTube’s stated eligibility requirements and whether the stream is scheduled. Recheck the current Help page for changes.
- A trailer is rejected or unsuitable. Check the permitted duration, match the scheduled stream’s aspect ratio and resolution as YouTube recommends, and confirm rights to both audio and video.
- The stream setup is not ready for viewers. Test the connection, framing, audio, and lighting in advance; OBS and Google both recommend testing before the first broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your live content is a pre-recorded video or playlist that should keep running on YouTube, StreamNeo handles the continuous playback from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot includes 24/7 looping and playlists, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. The service streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not live camera footage.
