Put the countdown in the video program that OBS sends to YouTube. The most reliable simple setup is a rendered countdown clip placed between each video in OBS’s VLC Video playlist—for example: video, countdown, video, countdown. YouTube’s viewer-side playlist loop does not insert countdowns into a live encoder feed.

Why the countdown has to be in your live program

In a YouTube Live broadcast, an encoder sends audio and video to YouTube; the broadcast is the event viewers watch. That is distinct from YouTube’s repeat control for a video or playlist a viewer is watching. To show a countdown between prerecorded segments in a live stream, include it in the program feed before that feed reaches YouTube. YouTube Live Streaming API overview and YouTube’s HLS stream setup guidance describe the encoder-to-YouTube stream workflow. YouTube’s playlist loop instructions concern playback by viewers, not inserting segments into a live feed.

The cited YouTube Live documentation does not describe a Live Control Room setting that automatically inserts a countdown between prerecorded items in an incoming encoder feed. Build the interstitial into the source program instead.

Recommended method: put countdown clips in the OBS playlist

A countdown video is an ordinary playlist item. Placing it between videos makes its position and duration explicit, and is straightforward to preview and rehearse.

1. Prepare and order the media

Choose the video order and countdown duration, then create or obtain a countdown clip supported by your playback setup. Add one countdown item after every video that needs an interstitial. For a two-video sequence, the order might be video A, countdown, video B, countdown. Include the final countdown if you want one before the sequence returns to its first video.

2. Add the sequence as an OBS VLC Video source

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video source will not appear without VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
  2. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will carry the program.
  3. Add the local media files in the exact intended order, including each countdown clip.
  4. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence.
  5. Enable Loop Playlist if the complete sequence should restart after its final item.

OBS documents VLC Video as a playlist source with playlist looping. Its Media Sources guide does not document Loop Playlist as a trigger for switching to a separate countdown scene at every clip boundary.

3. Decide what viewers see and hear during the countdown

Choose whether the countdown clip is silent, has its own audio, or is intended to carry sound from the preceding segment. Check that the timer is readable at your stream resolution and that transitions do not show an unintended blank or frozen frame. These outcomes depend on your scene and media files; do not assume that an overlay hides or pauses the video underneath it.

4. Connect OBS to the YouTube live event

Select or create the event in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then configure OBS with the stream details provided for that event. YouTube distinguishes the incoming audio-video stream from broadcast metadata, so confirm that OBS is sending the intended program to the correct event before going live. The YouTube Live Streaming API overview explains the stream and broadcast concepts.

5. Rehearse the complete cycle

  1. Preview each video-to-countdown handoff and confirm the countdown is visible for its intended duration.
  2. Listen to the audio across every transition, including whether unwanted silence or overlapping sound occurs.
  3. Check the last countdown-to-first-video boundary to confirm the playlist restarts as intended.
  4. Verify that the next video starts after each countdown and that the visible image is not blank or frozen.

Check the actual scene and media files before relying on the setup live; a playlist loop does not guarantee frame-accurate handoffs.

Alternative: use a separate countdown scene

A separate OBS scene can give you more control over the countdown’s appearance, and OBS sources can be layered. But putting a timer source above a video controls visual layering; it does not, by itself, define when the timer starts at each playlist-item boundary.

You must arrange the scene transition separately, either with operator action or an automation workflow, and verify how it behaves with your actual playlist. OBS’s documentation covers media sources and playlist controls, but does not specify an automatic playlist-item-to-countdown-scene trigger. This method is more flexible when countdown appearance or placement varies, but it requires a separately arranged transition. A rendered countdown item is simpler when the same interstitial should appear at known positions in a fixed sequence.

One repeating countdown file versus a multi-file sequence

For a single repeating media file, OBS’s standard Media Source has a Loop setting. For multiple videos and countdown clips in a sequence, use VLC Video and its Loop Playlist setting. Neither control should be treated as proof of an automatic transition to a separate scene after every item. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.

What YouTube’s live break feature does—and does not do

YouTube documents a Take a Break feature for live ad breaks and away slates. Its help page says a break does not automatically end when its countdown reaches zero. That is a different workflow from arranging countdown clips between prerecorded segments in a looping program. See YouTube’s live monetization guidance.

Troubleshooting countdown transitions

  • VLC Video is missing in OBS: install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, OBS’s guidance says to install 64-bit VLC.
  • The playlist plays videos in the wrong order: turn off Shuffle Playlist and check the item order, including the position of each countdown clip.
  • The sequence stops at the final item: enable Loop Playlist if you want it to restart from the beginning.
  • The timer does not appear between clips: confirm a countdown file is actually present at that position in the VLC playlist. Loop Playlist repeats the sequence; it is not documented as a per-item scene-change trigger.
  • A separate timer scene does not start at the clip boundary: arrange the transition or automation independently, then rehearse it. A layered timer source alone does not specify when it starts.
  • Audio or picture behaves unexpectedly at a handoff: inspect the media files and scene configuration, then preview the transition. Do not assume an overlay pauses the underlying video or that the handoff will be seamless.
  • The countdown appears in YouTube playback only when expected on the live stream: distinguish the incoming encoder program from a viewer’s YouTube repeat control. Put the interstitial in the OBS program feed.

Rights still apply to every item in the loop

Using a countdown between videos does not grant permission to rebroadcast the videos, music, or countdown artwork. Make sure you have the necessary rights for all material in the stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to loop uploaded videos without leaving OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the uploaded videos from the cloud, not a live camera feed.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, once per account.
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month.
