If your upload speed drops during a livestream, lower your encoder’s video bitrate until the connection can sustain it. If that is not enough, reduce resolution or frame rate. A stable, lower-quality stream is usually better than a high-quality stream that drops frames or disconnects.
In OBS, network-related dropped frames mean the connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS suggests 75% of your total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee—especially when speed fluctuates or other devices are uploading. OBS Project’s troubleshooting guide explains the trade-offs and next checks.
First, determine what is failing
Check OBS’s dropped-frame indicator and your streaming platform’s stream-health messages. Network-related dropped frames point to trouble sending video from your setup to the platform’s ingest server; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. The issue may be unstable upload capacity, a congested route, or a bitrate that is too high for the connection at that moment.
Separate broadcaster problems from viewer playback problems. If OBS reports no network drops but viewers say the stream buffers, their device, location, or internet connection may be the cause. A lower bitrate can make playback easier for viewers, particularly when the platform does not provide transcoding, but it does not prove that your upload connection is at fault. See OBS’s stream-buffering troubleshooting guide.

Lower bitrate without ending the stream
Reduce the video bitrate first
In OBS, open Settings > Output, select the streaming output settings, and lower the video bitrate. OBS Project’s 2024 guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. Treat that as a rough ceiling to test, not a safe promise: a speed test is a snapshot, and household uploads, network overhead, and fluctuations can leave less capacity available while live.
For example, if a connection’s measured upload speed is 8 Mbps, 75% is 6 Mbps. That arithmetic does not mean 6 Mbps will remain stable; if dropped frames continue, reduce the bitrate further. Twitch’s FAQ search-result summary has described a different general margin—upload capacity around 30% above configured bitrate—but its current page content was not independently verified. Platform guidance and connection conditions differ, so use the destination platform’s current recommendations rather than treating either rule as universal.

Reduce resolution or frame rate if bitrate alone is not enough
A lower resolution or frame rate reduces the amount of detail and motion you are asking the encoder to send. This can help preserve continuity when the connection cannot sustain the current setting. Choose a combination appropriate to your game, the motion on screen, the platform’s ingest limits, and your audience; there is no one setting that fits every stream.
For YouTube, its live encoder settings list bitrate recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube lists 720p at 30 or 60 fps as 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended for AV1/H.265, and 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for H.264. For 1080p at 60 fps, it lists 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended for AV1/H.265, and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for H.264. These are YouTube ingestion settings, not guarantees that your internet connection can sustain them. Do not apply them to other platforms.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
YouTube also notes that 2160p/4K does not offer its low-latency option. If low latency matters, weigh it against resolution rather than assuming you can always combine the highest resolution with the lowest latency.
Use OBS dynamic bitrate as a fallback
In OBS, open Settings > Advanced > Network and enable Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta), if the option is available in your version. OBS can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which may help avoid network-related dropped frames. It is a continuity measure, not a repair: the stream’s image quality will fall, and the underlying connection problem remains.

Check the connection and the path to the platform
- Pause competing uploads. Stop cloud backups, file uploads, and other heavy upload activity. Check whether other devices on the same connection are sending data, then see whether stream health improves.
- Test before going live. Run an upload test, then test the stream with representative game motion and audio. YouTube advises testing before starting and monitoring stream health during the event; a single speed-test result cannot represent every moment of a fluctuating connection.
- Try a different ingest server. If your software or platform lets you choose one, test another server. If the problem changes, that helps narrow down the route or server path; it does not itself fix a bad route.
- Test Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi. Connect the streaming computer to the router with Ethernet and compare results. Wi-Fi instability can affect streaming even when a speed test looks adequate.
- Check network software and equipment. Temporarily test without a VPN or network-management utility, and check security software, network drivers, cables, and devices for obvious problems. Change one thing at a time where practical so you can tell what made a difference.
- Restart the modem and router. If the problem persists, OBS recommends restarting network equipment. Do not replace a modem or router without evidence it is faulty; ask your ISP if you are unsure.
- Contact your ISP if local checks do not help. Give support the times the issue occurs, symptoms, and checks you have already tried. Congestion along the route or provider-side changes may be outside your control.
Choose continuity over a bitrate target
Use the highest setting your connection can sustain consistently, not the highest setting a platform permits. When upload capacity falls, reducing bitrate first is the quickest adjustment; reducing resolution or frame rate can provide more headroom if needed. Dynamic bitrate may soften a sudden congestion problem, but its quality will vary as it adjusts.
Keep the trade-off in view: higher resolution and frame rate generally require more bitrate, while a lower bitrate can make a stream more robust for both sending and viewing. Test the actual game or content you plan to stream because motion and detail affect how a chosen bitrate looks.
