For OBS itself, the OBS Studio store listing specifies 4 GB of RAM minimum and 8 GB recommended. Those are software-level requirements, not a guarantee that your PC can stream a game smoothly. The right capacity depends on the rest of your workload, and the available official guidance does not establish a universal RAM target for streaming, gaming, or higher-resolution broadcasts.
What OBS’s RAM figures actually mean
The OBS Studio store listing gives 4 GB RAM as the minimum and 8 GB as the recommended amount for its listed Windows and macOS requirements. The listing’s publication date is not shown in the captured result, so treat these as the listing’s stated requirements—not as a current, universal recommendation for every streaming setup.
OBS’s official system requirements page does not specify a RAM capacity. It cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” In other words, meeting a minimum does not show that a particular mix of game, scenes, encoding, and recording will run well.
Is 8 GB enough to stream?
Eight gigabytes matches the OBS store listing’s recommended figure for the software, but that alone cannot answer whether it is enough for your setup. Consider what runs alongside OBS: a game, local recording, browser-based overlays, and other sources may make your workload different from OBS alone. The official guidance does not give measured RAM use or a separate recommended capacity for those combinations.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- OBS alone or a simple scene: compare this with your actual setup rather than assuming the listing guarantees smooth streaming.
- OBS plus a game: the game adds another workload. The cited guidance does not quantify how much additional RAM it requires.
- Streaming and recording at once: this is a different workload from streaming alone; no official RAM figure for the combination is established here.
- Scenes with many sources or browser overlays: include their effect in your decision, but do not treat an unsupported number as a measured requirement.
Why resolution and frame rate do not give you a RAM number
Streaming performance is not determined by system RAM alone. OBS says CPU requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Twitch also notes that x264 encoding can tax the CPU, and that higher resolution and frame rate require more encoding power. These are reasons to assess the whole system—not evidence for a particular RAM amount.
Twitch’s surfaced 1440p guidance names software, GPU, operating system, display resolution, and upstream bandwidth requirements, but does not state a system RAM requirement. Its dual-format guidance discusses supported broadcast software, GPU and driver, upstream bandwidth, and track counts; it likewise does not give a RAM figure. GPU memory (VRAM) is also distinct from system RAM: a GPU requirement cannot be used as a system-memory recommendation.

How to decide whether to upgrade
- Write down your real workload. Note whether you run OBS alone or with a game, whether you record locally while streaming, and how complex your scenes and overlays are.
- Check how the stream behaves under that workload. If the setup struggles, do not assume RAM is the cause just because the OBS listing gives a minimum. Encoding, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity can also affect system demands.
- Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS’s official requirements page points users to the wizard for settings suited to their hardware. It is a starting point for configuration, not a guarantee that every game or production setup will perform well.
- Check upgrade compatibility before buying memory. Match the memory type, form factor, and supported capacity to your computer or motherboard. Desktop DIMMs and laptop SO-DIMMs, as well as different memory generations, are not interchangeable. Without your PC or motherboard model, no particular kit can be recommended.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating a minimum as a performance promise: OBS explicitly warns that compatible hardware may still be unable to stream or record.
- Turning CPU guidance into a RAM prescription: x264 encoding and higher resolution or frame rate can increase encoding demands, but those facts do not establish how much system RAM you need.
- Confusing VRAM with system RAM: they are different resources, and a GPU requirement does not provide a system-memory target.
- Buying memory by capacity alone: verify the supported type, form factor, and maximum capacity for your specific computer.
