Deploy Wowza Streaming Engine on GCE from Google Cloud Marketplace, then configure storage and restrict firewall access to the protocols your workload needs.

The simplest documented way to run Wowza Streaming Engine on Google Compute Engine (GCE) is to deploy Wowza’s Linux image from Google Cloud Marketplace. The image includes a Wowza license; Google Cloud bills for the running instance and bandwidth. Configure the VM’s storage and firewall for the protocols you actually use, then open its deployment details to reach Engine Manager. Wowza’s setup guide, updated July 22, 2026, identifies the image as Streaming Engine 4.11.3; verify the live Marketplace listing before deployment because image versions and console steps can change.

What you need before you deploy

  • A Google account with access to a Google Cloud project. Create a project or select one where you can create VM instances and access the required cloud resources.
  • Permissions sufficient for the deployment method you choose. Google Cloud requirements can vary; check the current IAM guidance for your project rather than assuming a fixed role applies.
  • A plan for the workload: live delivery only, or also recording, DVR, or VOD. This determines the storage choice and which network protocols and ports are necessary.
  • A decision about administrator access. Engine Manager is for trusted administrators; do not make management ports broadly reachable unless you have a specific need and have secured access.

Wowza recommends the Google Cloud console as the more user-friendly provisioning route. Installing the gcloud CLI is optional for this Marketplace workflow.

Deploy the Wowza Marketplace image

  1. Open the product listing. In the Google Cloud console, find Wowza Streaming Engine in Google Cloud Marketplace and select Launch.
  2. Review the current offer. Check the listing’s version, pricing, support terms, and deployment options before confirming. Wowza’s guide says the preconfigured image runs Streaming Engine 4.11.3, but that version is specific to the guide updated July 22, 2026, not a promise that every later listing will use it.
  3. Configure the deployment. Choose the project and VM options offered by the current deployment flow. The Wowza material does not prescribe a universal machine size or disk capacity; base these on your expected traffic, media workload, and retention needs.
  4. Review networking and storage. Enable only the firewall rules needed for your delivery and management paths. Choose storage based on whether the server will record or serve stored media.
  5. Deploy. After you submit the deployment, check its status under Solution deployments on the Resources tab.
  6. Open Engine Manager. From that deployment’s Details tab, use the site URL and the login instructions shown for your instance. URLs and credentials are deployment-specific; do not reuse examples from another VM.
  7. Arrange Wowza support access if needed. For a first Marketplace deployment, follow the Suggested next steps on the Details tab to register in Wowza’s support portal. Wowza says registration is needed for email support and to request StreamLock SSL certificates.

Under the Marketplace offering described by Wowza, the license is embedded in the image and Google manages billing for running instance time and bandwidth. Charges begin after deployment completes. The guide says there is no separate monthly Wowza invoice for Streaming Engine usage under this offer. Check the live Marketplace listing for current charges; no universal price is stated here.

Choose storage for the job

Workload Storage approach What to consider
Live applications without server-side recording Wowza says a standard hard drive can be sufficient. Estimate capacity and performance from the actual workload; the guide does not prescribe a disk size.
Recording, DVR, or VOD Wowza suggests SSD storage for caching or direct server recordings. Plan for bitrate, recording duration, retention, and concurrent work rather than relying on a universal capacity figure.
Media Cache using cloud storage Wowza Media Cache can use Google Cloud Storage to store and retrieve content. Configure it for the content and access pattern your application requires.

Open only the ports your workflows require

Wowza’s Marketplace guide lists these commonly selected Google Cloud firewall rules. The protocol and port must match the application and delivery method you configure:

Traffic or service Port and protocol When it is relevant
RTMP TCP 1935 RTMP ingest or delivery workflows that use this endpoint.
HTTP and HTTPS TCP 80 and TCP 443 HTTP-based delivery and other configured web access. Wowza’s port guidance also lists TCP 80 for HLS, MPEG-DASH, and RTMPT.
RTSP TCP 554 RTSP workflows. Wowza says this rule can be disabled if RTSP is not used.
Engine Manager TCP 8086–8088 Wowza Streaming Engine Manager access. Restrict these management ports to trusted administrator addresses or keep them private.
RTP over UDP UDP 6970–9999 Wowza’s general specification lists this range for RTP UDP streaming; open it only if your workflow needs it.

Wowza cautions that “Creating certain firewall rules may expose your instance to the internet.” Expose only required streaming endpoints to their intended audiences, and limit management access. Wowza’s port guidance says inbound HTTP allows its licensing server to confirm license validity; check current licensing and network guidance before changing firewall rules, including outbound access.

Test the deployment before relying on it

  • Confirm the deployment reaches a completed status in the console.
  • Open the instance-specific site URL and sign in to Engine Manager using the instructions provided for that deployment.
  • From a client configured for your chosen protocol, test the ingest and playback paths you intend to use.
  • Check that the firewall permits those paths and no others than necessary. If a path fails, verify protocol, port, VM/network configuration, and any relevant Google Cloud firewall rules.
  • If you plan to record or use DVR/VOD, verify that media is written to the intended storage and that capacity is adequate for your retention policy.

When one VM is not enough

Wowza documents a Google Cloud topology with one origin VM and multiple edge VMs in a repeater configuration. A Dynamic Load Balancing AddOn runs on an edge server to distribute connections among the edge instances. Wowza presents this approach for cases where a single origin cannot handle audience load or delivery across regions is desired. It is a separate architecture and configuration effort, not a prerequisite for a first or small deployment. The documentation cited here does not provide a universal viewer-capacity threshold or performance benchmark.
