Both paths require Docker and a valid Wowza license or trial key; you also need to select an image tag, provide access credentials, publish the ports your protocols need, and plan for persistent data.
Choose a Docker setup
| Option | Best for | How it is configured | License and persistence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Linux container | Operators who want to set container options themselves. | Pull the Engine image and start it with docker run flags and environment variables. |
Bring your own subscription or perpetual license key; Wowza recommends bind-mounting logs. |
| Docker Compose trial | Trying a bundled setup from one YAML file. | Compose defines separate Engine and Manager services, their ports, variables, and optional volumes. | Use a trial key or paid key; mount configuration, applications, and content you need to retain. |
The direct procedure below follows Wowza’s Linux Docker setup guide. For the bundled route, see the Docker Compose setup guide. Both setup pages were updated October 2, 2026.
Before you start
- Docker: Install Docker on the target machine, then run
docker versionand confirm it returns both client and server information. - License: The direct container path is BYOL: have a Wowza subscription or perpetual key ready. Compose can use a trial key obtained by signing up for a trial, or a paid key. The direct guide says an absent or invalid key causes the software to operate in Trial mode.
- Architecture and tag: Wowza documents AMD64 (x86_64) and ARM64 (aarch64) images. Its Docker instructions identify WSE 4.12.0 as the latest software image in their October 2, 2026 update; check the repository for current tags before pulling. The
latesttag is controlled by the repository owner and is not guaranteed to identify the newest software. - Ports: Decide which management and streaming protocols you intend to use. Check that their host ports are available and that firewalls or network rules permit the traffic.
- Credentials: Choose a Manager username and strong password. Do not use the guide’s default credentials for an exposed service.
Run the direct Linux container
1. Pull the image for your platform
The image is published in the wowza/wowza-streaming-engine Docker Hub repository. Choose an explicit version tag if you need repeatable deployments. For example, substitute the tag you selected for [version]:
docker pull wowza/wowza-streaming-engine:[version]
Docker selects a supported architecture variant for your platform. Wowza also documents an ARM-specific pull example. On Apple Silicon, when using an ARM image, Wowza cautions against configuring Docker to use Rosetta 2 for Intel emulation.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Start the container with access, credentials, and storage configured
The basic form documented by Wowza is:
docker run -it --name [container-name] --entrypoint /sbin/entrypoint.sh [repository]:[version]
Replace the bracketed values; they are placeholders, not literal arguments. The -it option attaches a pseudo-terminal. Use -d instead of -it to run in the background. A container name makes later stop and start commands easier.
For a deployment that publishes the example management and RTMP ports, restarts automatically, sets credentials and a license, and mounts logs, use this expanded pattern. Replace every placeholder with a value appropriate to your host and license:

docker run -d --name [container-name] --restart always --entrypoint /sbin/entrypoint.sh -p 1935:1935 -p 8086:8086 -p 8087:8087 -p 8088:8088 -v [host-log-directory]:/usr/local/WowzaStreamingEngine/logs -e WSE_MGR_USER=[manager-user] -e WSE_MGR_PASS=[manager-password] -e WSE_LIC=[wowza-license-key] -e WSE_IP_PARAM=[host-ipv4-address] wowza/wowza-streaming-engine:[version]
The ports shown are the direct guide’s example, not a universal requirement: publish the ports needed for your chosen protocols, and confirm the host ports are free. The guide warns that Manager will not be accessible if ports are not exposed. Set WSE_IP_PARAM to the appropriate IPv4 address; this Docker configuration does not support IPv6 addresses. The guide says the default, when no IP is supplied, is localhost, which may not suit remote access.
Mounting the log directory keeps logs from filling the container’s primary disk. The direct guide says logs and libraries persist when a container is stopped, but data that must survive container replacement should be stored in appropriately mounted host directories or volumes. Secure the host paths and credentials as you would for any service.

3. Open Wowza Streaming Engine Manager
Once the container is running and the required ports are published, open the Manager interface through the host address and the published Manager port. The direct guide’s environment variables are WSE_MGR_USER and WSE_MGR_PASS. If omitted, both username and password default to wowza; replace them with operator-chosen credentials, especially if the service is reachable beyond a trusted local network.
Supply a valid license in WSE_LIC. If the key is missing or invalid, the direct guide says the software operates in Trial mode; confirm the licensing status in your deployment rather than assuming the key was accepted.
Use Docker Compose for the trial stack
Wowza’s Compose path is a different deployment option, not just a shorter spelling of the direct command. Its YAML file defines two services: the Engine backend and the browser-based Manager. Obtain a Wowza trial key for the trial setup, or configure a paid key.

- Download or create the Compose YAML using Wowza’s Compose instructions.
- Set the image tags, license key, and optional Manager admin credentials in the YAML. Avoid leaving sample credentials in a deployment you expose.
- Review the port mappings against your actual protocols and host firewall. The guide’s example maps ports for REST API, web delivery, secure streaming, RTMP-family protocols, and SRT over UDP; mappings alone do not guarantee a protocol is enabled or reachable through your network.
- Configure volume mounts for configuration, applications, and content that must remain beyond a container lifecycle. Check that the host directories exist and that Docker can write to them.
- From the directory containing the YAML file, start the stack with
docker compose up.
The sample Manager URL in Wowza’s guide is http://localhost:8088/login.htm?host=http://wse.docker:8087. It is an example for that Compose configuration; if you change service names or port mappings, use the corresponding values in your own setup.
Stop, restart, and preserve the deployment
Direct container
Use the container name chosen at launch:
- Stop:
docker stop [container-name] - Start it again:
docker start [container-name]
Stopping and starting an existing container is different from removing and recreating it. Keep important configuration, applications, content, and logs in mounted storage when they need to outlive that container.
Compose stack
Manage the Compose services from the directory containing the YAML, using Docker Compose commands appropriate to your installed Docker version. Keep the YAML and any mounted host directories backed up; the mounts are what preserve data outside the containers.

Troubleshoot common startup and access problems
- Image pull fails or the container exits immediately: Check that the image repository and tag exist, and that the selected image supports the host architecture. On Apple Silicon, use the ARM image path without enabling Rosetta 2 Intel emulation as Wowza cautions.
- Manager page will not load: Confirm the Manager port is published, the host port is not already in use, the container is running, and host firewall or cloud network rules allow access. The direct guide specifically warns Manager is inaccessible without exposed ports.
- Streaming or a protocol endpoint is unreachable: Publish the ports for the protocol you intend to use, verify the service’s protocol configuration, and check host/network firewall rules. Compose examples include several protocol families, but a mapping by itself does not enable or expose a protocol through every network.
- License is not accepted or the service is in Trial mode: Check the value supplied to
WSE_LICor the Compose license field for accuracy and validity. The direct guide says a missing or invalid key puts the software in Trial mode. - Cannot reach the service from another machine: Verify
WSE_IP_PARAMis set to the intended IPv4 address, not an IPv6 address, and that the relevant ports are published and allowed through the network. Without an IP value, the direct guide says the default is localhost. - Data disappears after replacement: A stopped container retains its logs and libraries according to the direct guide, but replacement is a separate lifecycle event. Add and verify bind mounts or Compose volumes for any data that must survive container removal or recreation.
- Host disk fills up: Bind-mount logs to host storage as Wowza recommends, and monitor the capacity of that storage as well as the container host.
