Video bitrate is how much encoded video data your stream sends each second, usually measured in megabits per second (Mbps). For YouTube Live, choose the live-ingest recommendation for your resolution, frame rate and encoder codec—then make sure your real upload connection can sustain the total stream bitrate with about 20% headroom. A recommended setting is a starting point, not a guarantee of a stable stream.
What video bitrate means
An encoder compresses your video into data and sends that data to YouTube. Bitrate measures the amount sent each second. A higher bitrate can preserve more detail, but it also requires more upload capacity; setting it higher than your connection can reliably provide can contribute to an unstable stream.
Bitrate is only one part of stream quality. Resolution, frame rate, codec, the movement and detail in the scene, and the viewer’s playback conditions all matter. YouTube transcodes live streams into different playback formats, so the bitrate you send is not a promise of a particular viewer-side quality or buffer-free playback. YouTube’s live encoder guidance explains the ingest settings and its transcoding approach.
YouTube Live bitrate recommendations
The figures below are YouTube’s published recommendations for live ingest, in Mbps, not independent test results or targets for uploading a finished video. Use the column for the codec selected in your encoder and the row matching the resolution and frame rate you send. The lower figure is the listed minimum; the higher one is recommended. | 360p, 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, YouTube’s recommended live-ingest setting for H.264 at 1080p60 is 17 Mbps; its recommendation for AV1 or H.265 at the same mode is 12 Mbps. Those different figures reflect the codec columns in YouTube’s table. They do not establish that every encoder, game scene or connection will perform identically at those rates.
How to choose your bitrate
- Pick a resolution and frame rate. Match what your encoder and connection can support. Higher frame rates can help fast-moving games, but they call for a higher recommended bitrate in many modes.
- Check the encoder codec. Find the H.264 or AV1/H.265 column that matches the codec you will actually send. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as video codec options; availability in your particular encoder and workflow can vary.
- Use the live-ingest recommended value as your target, if your connection supports it. Do not use the upload-encoding table for a live encoder: the two workflows have different settings.
- Budget against measured upload capacity. YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Account for audio and any other streams in your budget, not only video.
- If capacity is inadequate or fluctuates, lower the bitrate and/or resolution, then test again. A sustainable lower setting is more useful than an unsustainable target. Check the stream with similar motion and audio to the planned broadcast.
- Watch stream health during the live session. Respond to encoder or network warnings rather than assuming the pre-stream recommendation guarantees stability.
How much upload speed do you need?
Use outbound upload capacity, not download speed, to judge whether a bitrate is viable. YouTube’s practical guidance is to leave about 20% of available upload bandwidth unused as headroom. As a simple estimate, reserve one-fifth of measured upload capacity and use no more than the remaining portion for the total stream bitrate. The estimate is not a guarantee: a single speed test cannot account for a shared or changing connection.

YouTube recommends testing upload speed and using a reliable connection. A wired Ethernet connection can be a useful connection option, but a cable cannot increase the upload capacity provided by your internet service. On a shared network, other activity may also reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Encoder settings beyond bitrate
Bitrate will not compensate for a mismatched or incompatible encoder configuration. YouTube’s live guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS transport and recommends RTMPS; it recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It lists AAC or MP3 audio, with 128 Kbps stereo and 384 Kbps 5.1 in its advanced settings. Audio uses bandwidth too, but those audio values are separate from the video-bitrate table.

These are YouTube’s compatibility recommendations; check which controls your encoder actually exposes. Details are in YouTube’s encoder settings page.
Resolution, latency and 4K
For 2160p (4K) live streams, YouTube says the “improve for low latency” option is unavailable: 4K is set to normal latency. If reducing delay is more important to your broadcast than sending at 4K, account for that trade-off when choosing a mode. YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives the 4K latency qualification.

Live bitrate is not upload bitrate
A live encoder sends a continuous stream to YouTube, so use YouTube’s live-ingest table and its CBR guidance for this job. Uploading a finished video is a different workflow: YouTube’s upload recommendations cover encoded files and specify variable bitrate, with separate targets by resolution and frame rate. Do not copy an upload target into a live encoder. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for the file-upload workflow.
Common bitrate problems and fixes
- The stream drops frames or reports network trouble: the selected total bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the connection may be fluctuating. Recheck upload capacity, leave headroom, and reduce bitrate and/or resolution before testing again.
- The encoder’s bitrate target does not match YouTube’s table: confirm the incoming resolution, frame rate and selected codec, then compare against the live-ingest column—not the upload table.
- The setting fits on paper but the live session is unstable: account for shared-network use and variability rather than treating one speed test as a guarantee. Repeat a representative test and choose a setting your real connection sustains.
- Picture quality is not what you expected: verify that the encoder is sending the intended resolution, frame rate and codec, and that the correct bitrate mode is configured. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream, and viewer playback conditions also affect what people see.
- 4K latency is higher than expected: YouTube sets 2160p streams to normal latency; choose a lower resolution if the low-latency option is essential.
