Build a chicken cooker by combining an egg-collecting hopper, a dispenser, a chick-sized holding space, lava above a non-flammable slab, and a hopper-and-chest collection point. Adult chickens lay eggs; the dispenser launches them into the chamber, where hatched chicks can grow below the lava and mature chickens contact it and drop cooked chicken for collection. Exact block placement can vary by edition and game version, so follow a layout made for your target version.
How the cooked chicken farm works
This automatic cooked chicken farm combines five stages: egg collection, egg dispensing, hatching, chick growth, and adult processing. Chickens lay eggs into a hopper, which feeds a dispenser. The dispenser fires eggs into an enclosed chamber. Chicks that hatch are short enough to remain beneath the lava while they grow; once grown, chickens reach the lava and are cooked. A hopper below the chamber routes drops into a chest.
This mechanism is described in the Minecraft Wiki animal-farming tutorial and its egg-farming tutorial. Treat the layout as a design to adapt, not a guarantee that identical block placement works in every Java and Bedrock release.
Materials and layout
The exact number of blocks depends on the chosen layout. Gather the components below, then use a diagram or video that names the Minecraft edition and version it targets.

- A chest and hopper for collecting cooked chicken and other drops.
- A hopper to collect eggs and route them to a dispenser.
- A dispenser, plus the redstone power arrangement required by the selected layout.
- A non-flammable slab to form the standing surface and separate the chick space from the lava.
- Lava and non-flammable blocks for an enclosed cooking chamber.
- Chickens or eggs to seed the farm.
The hopper is the key item mover: it can gather chicken eggs and transport items, and redstone can pause its operation. See the official Minecraft hopper guide.
Build and start the chicken cooker
- Place the collection chest. Set it where you can reach it, then connect a hopper so the hopper’s output feeds into the chest.
- Form the chicken chamber. Build a non-flammable enclosure over the collection area. Put the non-flammable slab where chickens will stand, with the chick-sized space below it arranged according to the version-specific layout.
- Add the lava above the slab. The design relies on chicks being small enough to wait below the lava as they grow, while adults reach it. Ensure the chamber confines the lava and that the collection hopper is positioned to receive the drops.
- Set up egg delivery. Place a hopper where it can collect eggs and feed them into the dispenser aimed at the chamber. Add the redstone power arrangement shown for your chosen layout; a comparator or another redstone setup may be used depending on the design.
- Introduce chickens or eggs. Seed the egg-producing area with chickens, or feed eggs into the dispenser. Confirm eggs are being collected and launched into the chamber before leaving the farm running.
Choose an egg supply and manage output
A self-sustaining setup combines egg production and cooking in one build. A separate egg farm can instead supply the dispenser, which makes the breeder and cooker easier to inspect independently. The Minecraft Wiki egg-farming tutorial describes both the broader egg loop and using a lower slab to keep water or lava from flowing downward while allowing taller grown chickens to be killed.

The same tutorial reports that a chick takes about 20 minutes to grow and that eggs are laid every 5–10 minutes. These are tutorial-reported timings, not a guaranteed production schedule: edition, game version, and server settings may affect behavior. Output is gradual, so do not expect an immediate chest full of cooked chicken.
Keep the chicken population controlled. The egg-farming tutorial warns that a large unmanaged population can cause lag, potentially before entity cramming becomes the limiting factor. Avoid treating unlimited breeding as a harmless way to increase output.

Check edition, lava, and collection behavior
Java and Bedrock can differ in redstone timing, entity positioning, and item collection behavior; the cited tutorials do not establish that one exact arrangement works unchanged across current releases. Before building, check that the instructions identify your edition and version. If eggs are not reaching the dispenser, verify hopper direction and whether redstone is pausing the hopper. If drops do not reach the chest, check the collection hopper position and the slab-and-chamber arrangement against the layout you are following. If adults are not being cooked as intended, recheck the height relationship between the chick space, slab, and lava rather than assuming the same geometry applies to another edition.
