Use each platform’s built-in automated moderation to catch or filter risky chat, then have trusted human moderators review ambiguous cases and respond to context. YouTube and Twitch can hold messages for moderator review; TikTok LIVE offers keyword filtering. These tools reduce the volume of chat people need to inspect, but they do not replace human judgment or guarantee that every harmful message will be caught.
How AI moderation works during a live stream
On the platforms covered here, automated moderation is best treated as a first-pass filter—not an autonomous judge. Depending on the platform, it may hold potentially risky messages for review or filter comments that match terms you have chosen. People still need to decide what to allow, remove, or escalate, especially when meaning depends on context.
Before choosing settings, consider five practical questions:
- Action: Does the tool hold a message for review, hide or block it, or filter based on keywords?
- Oversight: Who can review a held message, and what happens if nobody responds?
- Controls: Can you adjust sensitivity, block terms or links, or slow the rate of chat?
- Capacity: Can your moderators review the volume you expect?
- Availability: Are the controls available to your account and region now?
There is no single cross-platform setting: configure moderation on the service where you are streaming, and check your own account for current availability.

Set up YouTube Live chat moderation
YouTube offers a blocked-words list, a setting that holds potentially inappropriate messages, and slow mode. The held-message setting has two levels: Basic holds potentially inappropriate messages, while Strict holds a broader range. A channel owner or managing moderator can show or hide held messages. If nobody acts, they remain hidden. YouTube cautions that “No system is perfect,” and describes the feature as help with moderation rather than a complete solution. Before you go live
- Open YouTube’s live-chat moderation settings and add channel-specific terms to the blocked-words list.
- Choose Basic or Strict according to how much review your moderator team can handle and how willing you are to hold borderline messages for human review. Neither level is a universal best choice.
- Assign a trusted managing moderator who can review held messages and make show-or-hide decisions.
- If chat is moving too quickly for useful conversation or review, enable slow mode to limit how often viewers can comment.
YouTube also advises creators to moderate live chat and use trusted moderators in its guidance on avoiding restrictions on live streaming.

Turn on Twitch AutoMod and add chat controls
Twitch AutoMod catches potentially risky messages and holds them for moderator review before they appear to others. Twitch recommends reliable human moderators and warns that automated systems cannot catch everything or be fully accurate. Its setup guidance also describes warnings, timeouts, bans, blocked terms and phrases, link restrictions, slow mode, follower-only or subscriber-only modes, chat clearing, and Shield Mode. A practical setup sequence
- Enable AutoMod and select a level your moderators can keep up with; held messages need timely review.
- Choose reliable moderators who understand your community rules and can make context-sensitive decisions.
- Add channel-specific blocked terms and phrases, and decide whether to restrict links.
- Use slow mode when chat is too fast to manage. During a sudden surge or raid, consider more restrictive chat modes or Shield Mode, using the controls available to your account.
- Use warnings, timeouts, or bans to respond to behavior that warrants action under your rules. Clear chat when needed to remove a flood of messages.
Twitch notes that third-party chat bots can fill gaps, particularly in fast-moving chat or during malicious raids. Treat one as an optional addition: check its current platform support and features before relying on it. Twitch’s Community Guidelines provide the policy context for channel safety.

Filter comments on TikTok LIVE
TikTok LIVE lets hosts and moderators use keyword filtering to limit comments they consider inappropriate or potentially against its Community Guidelines. TikTok’s guide documents a limit of up to 500 words in the LIVE keyword list. Because the broadcast is real time, you cannot edit it during the stream. Prepare the host, moderators, and guests
- Build the keyword list before going LIVE, focusing on terms relevant to your community and the risks you expect.
- Brief moderators on what to flag and who should act when a comment needs attention.
- Set expectations with guests before they join, including who will respond if guest content creates a safety issue.
- Check the account’s current controls and eligibility. TikTok says access requirements can vary by market and some features may not be available when a creator first starts using LIVE.
Keep human moderators in the loop
Automated filters can miss harmful messages or hold harmless ones. A human moderator adds context: they can distinguish a slur directed at someone from discussion of the word, recognize a targeted harassment pattern, and decide whether a guest or viewer needs intervention. On YouTube and Twitch, held messages require a human decision if you want them reviewed; on YouTube, they stay hidden if nobody acts.

Agree on a short set of channel rules and an escalation plan before the broadcast. Decide who reviews held messages, when to use a warning versus a timeout or ban, and who takes over if chat surges. Match the level of automation and rate controls to the number of people available to moderate; turning on stricter filters without enough review capacity can leave legitimate messages waiting.
