Before you announce a move, check the destination’s eligibility rules and both services’ terms, then test the new setup and give viewers a clear date, link, and fallback plan.
What moves—and what usually does not
Think of a provider switch as several separate jobs: configuring the broadcast, preserving content, rebuilding production tools, and bringing your audience along. Do not assume followers, subscriptions, channel history, chat, or monetization transfer automatically. The official platform materials discussed here describe service-specific accounts and features; they do not establish a general channel-migration process.
Make an inventory before changing anything:
- VODs, clips, recordings, descriptions, and metadata
- Profile text, panels, schedules, emotes, overlays, alerts, and chat rules
- Moderator contacts, bots, integrations, and community links
- Partner, sponsorship, exclusivity, or other contractual commitments
Use the inventory as a checklist, not as a promise that each item can be copied to another service.
Choose the destination and a realistic move date
Compare the destination against the reason you are leaving. Check audience discovery and notifications, moderation tools, archive and clip behavior, monetization access, content rules, encoder compatibility, quality limits, accessibility, and support. Read current terms for both providers, plus any partner or sponsor agreement that applies to you. Simulcasting or directing viewers elsewhere may be subject to account-specific conditions.

Confirm that you can use the destination channel, meet its current live eligibility requirements, and configure your encoder before telling viewers the switch is final. For YouTube, live-streaming eligibility includes channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days; its Help guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. Requirements can change, so check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance before scheduling.
Preserve VODs and other content
Save local recordings when available and permitted. Download or export important archives with the old provider’s current tools, and open a sample file before relying on a bulk export. Keep source files and useful metadata separately where practical. Before reposting material, check whether you have the necessary rights and whether the destination’s policies allow it.

- Kick: its streaming guide says a VOD is saved to the channel page after a broadcast ends. That does not mean every past stream is downloadable or transferable.
- Twitch: Twitch Help search-result guidance describes past broadcasts and an export option to YouTube for linked accounts. Verify the current workflow in your account before relying on it; this is not evidence that all archives or metadata transfer.
Neither archive behavior moves followers, chat history, or channel identity to a new provider.
Configure the new provider and encoder
- Create or prepare the destination channel and stream. Set the title, category, privacy, schedule, and latency in the destination’s dashboard. A scheduled stream may appear in YouTube subscribers’ feeds, where viewers can opt into notifications; discovery and alerts are provider-specific.
- Copy the destination’s stream URL and key. In YouTube, the Live Control Room provides the stream key. YouTube describes keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” An owner or manager can reset a key there; after a reset, update the encoder with the replacement.
- Enter the destination credentials in your encoder. For OBS using Kick, Kick’s May 22, 2026 guide specifies Settings > Stream > Service > Custom…, then pasting the dashboard’s Stream URL and Key. Kick lists OBS, XSplit, Streamlabs Desktop, and MELD among supported applications; exact interface labels can change.
- Check output settings against the destination. Confirm resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe settings in the encoder and compare them with the provider’s current requirements. Kick advises keeping bitrate within your maximum upload speed; consult its current guide for applicable limits rather than assuming a fixed value.
- Test the full viewer experience. If the service supports a private, unlisted, or otherwise low-risk test, check picture and sound, chat, overlays, alerts, moderation access, VOD creation, and the intended horizontal or vertical output. Verify the stream from a viewer’s perspective as well as in the encoder.
- Prepare a fallback. Keep a backup of the destination configuration, a way to contact viewers independent of the old channel, and a short notice explaining where the broadcast will resume if setup fails.
Treat stream keys as credentials: do not show them in screenshots or chat. If a key is exposed, reset it at the provider and replace it in the encoder. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance explains its key controls.

Tell viewers where to find you
- Announce the move in advance on the old channel and on communication channels you control independently. Include the exact destination name and link, plus the first-stream date and time with a time zone.
- Repeat the notice near your final broadcast on the old service. Update profile panels, social profiles, community servers, overlays, and scheduled-event descriptions where you can.
- Publish a schedule or upcoming event on the destination if available. On YouTube, scheduled streams may surface in subscribers’ feeds and viewers can select “Notify me.”
- Leave a “where to find me now” notice on the old profile if its features and rules allow it. Do not count on the old provider to redirect followers or notifications automatically.
Can you stream to both providers during the transition?
Check the terms that apply to your specific accounts before simulcasting. The rules are not interchangeable between providers. Kick’s May 22, 2026 guidance says multistreaming is available only to Kick Partner Program streamers; for long-form destinations such as Twitch or YouTube, the creator must enable the Multistreaming toggle. Kick also says payout is reduced by 50% for the duration of a multistreaming session. This is a Kick-specific partner condition, not a general rule for other services. Confirm your eligibility and current terms before relying on it.
Common switching problems and fixes
- The encoder will not connect: confirm that you selected the destination’s correct service or custom-server option and copied both its current URL and key. If you reset a key, replace the old one in the encoder.
- The stream drops or buffers: compare encoder bitrate with the destination’s current limits and your available upload speed. Reduce output demands if the connection cannot sustain them, then test again.
- Viewers cannot find the new stream: check that the destination event is public or otherwise set to the intended visibility, share the direct link, and include the time zone in announcements. Do not assume old followers will be notified automatically.
- A VOD is missing or incomplete: check the provider’s archive settings and account-specific retention or availability in its current dashboard. Keep local recordings when possible; an export feature on one provider does not guarantee a complete archive transfer.
- Alerts, chat tools, or moderation access fail: reconnect integrations to the destination where supported, check their permissions, and test with moderators before the first public stream.
- A partner or revenue feature changes: review the destination’s eligibility and your old provider’s partner or exclusivity terms directly. Do not infer that monetization status follows your audience to another service.

Cost and time planning
A provider switch does not inherently require new hardware: the documented setup is an account, encoder configuration, and audience communication. Budget time for eligibility checks, content preservation, integration changes, testing, and announcements. Any software or services you choose for extra production or simulcasting should be checked for current compatibility, terms, and cost; those details vary and are not established here.
