Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFirst find out where the mismatch begins: in the prerecorded file, in your streaming software’s output, or only in YouTube playback. Test the exact file locally, then make a recording or private test from the same scene you use for the continuous stream. Correct the source or the specific capture path that fails; changing unrelated encoder settings—or switching protocols just because playback is delayed—may not fix synchronization.
Identify whether the problem is a fixed offset or growing drift
Choose a clear cue that pairs sound with a visible event, such as a mouth movement and spoken word or an impact and its sound. Check it near the beginning and again near the end of the file or test output. If the mismatch is about the same at both points, it appears to be a fixed offset. If it becomes larger, it is growing drift. These observations narrow the investigation, but neither pattern alone proves a particular cause.
- Use the exact file, scene, audio track, and playback settings used by the continuous stream.
- Record the operating system, OBS version if applicable, selected audio track, ingest protocol, and what changed between tests.
- Change one relevant setting at a time and keep a known-good configuration to return to.
Check the prerecorded file before changing stream settings
Play the exact source file locally in a reliable media player. Check the synchronization cue near both the start and end. If the file is already out of sync, repair or replace that source before adjusting live-stream controls. A live encoder setting cannot be assumed to repair a mismatch already present in the media.
If the file plays correctly locally, test it through the actual streaming scene and inspect the resulting recording or stream output. That comparison helps distinguish a source-file fault from a problem introduced or exposed by the streaming setup.

Check playback sources in OBS
The following controls are specific to OBS Studio; exact labels can vary by version. OBS Media Source supports common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Its playback options include looping, restarting playback when active, hardware decoding, playback speed, and end-of-playback behavior. Review that the selected media file and playback properties are the ones you intend to use. OBS: Media Sources.
For a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source can play a list of files and requires VLC to be installed. Confirm the playlist order and the properties of the source being tested; do not assume that a playlist setup behaves identically to a single Media Source file. OBS: Media Sources.

Compare OBS output with local playback
- Run the normal scene. Use the same source, track selection, and playback mode as the continuous stream.
- Make a local recording. Inspect the resulting file in a media player rather than relying on OBS audio monitoring alone. OBS’s mixer guidance recommends recording as usual and playing the recording back before publishing. OBS: Audio Mixer Guide.
- Test YouTube privately or with an unlisted test. Include representative movement and audio, then check the stream output and YouTube stream health. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Compare the same synchronization cues. Check early and late points in both the local OBS recording and YouTube playback so you can see whether the mismatch is in the output or appears only later in delivery or playback.
Use a control that matches the failing audio path
If the source file itself is out of sync
Fix or replace the source file, then repeat the local playback check. Do not rely on a live-stream offset control to correct a problem embedded in prerecorded media unless you have confirmed that the particular control affects that source in your setup.
If a separate audio device is out of sync in OBS
Inspect that device’s source configuration. On Windows, OBS provides “Use Device Timestamps” for audio input and output capture and describes it as an attempt to prevent desynchronization. This is a device-capture option, not a universal fix for audio already embedded in a prerecorded Media Source. OBS: Audio Sources.

Do not assume Advanced Audio Properties’ “Sync Offset” will fix a prerecorded Media Source’s embedded audio timing. The available official OBS documentation does not establish that as a correction for this case. An OBS forum post from 2021 describes one user’s imported WAV source not responding to an offset; that single report is not definitive for other versions or configurations. OBS forum report.
If the local output is in sync but YouTube playback seems late
Distinguish audiovisual alignment from delivery latency. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. That means viewers may receive the program later; by itself, it does not show that sound and picture are misaligned within the program. Compare the actual stream output and ingest mode before changing protocol. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for HLS ingestion.

Keep YouTube encoder settings in context
YouTube’s published encoder guidance is useful for a stable, compatible ingest, but it is not a specific cure for a prerecorded-file sync fault. Its current Help guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant-bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Audio guidance is 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1, with recommended bitrates of 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Check the current YouTube Help page before publishing, since platform guidance can change. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
For HLS specifically, YouTube’s setup instructions specify segments of one to four seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. These are HLS setup parameters, not evidence that HLS causes internal A/V desynchronization or that switching away from HLS will repair a source file. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for HLS ingestion.

Troubleshoot common outcomes
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The file is out of sync in local playback | Repair or replace the source, then retest before changing live controls. |
| The file is in sync locally, but an OBS recording is not | Check the OBS scene, media source or playlist, selected audio track, and any separate captured audio device. Test one relevant change at a time. |
| The OBS recording is in sync, but YouTube playback is not | Compare the actual stream output and YouTube stream health. Determine whether sound and picture are misaligned or whether the whole stream is simply arriving later. |
| The mismatch grows between the beginning and end | Record this as drift, not merely a fixed offset. Compare the same early and late cues in the source, local recording, and test stream before choosing a correction. |
| An OBS audio offset appears to have no effect | Confirm whether the affected audio is a separate captured source or is embedded in a Media Source. The available official guidance does not establish that the offset corrects embedded prerecorded audio. |
