Live captioning displays spoken audio as text while a YouTube livestream is playing. You can use YouTube’s automatic captions if your channel and stream are eligible, or supply captions through compatible encoder settings or professional captioning software. Automatic captions are documented for English-language streams at normal latency; they are not available to every channel, and live captions do not necessarily carry over to the replay.
How YouTube Live captions work
Closed captions are the visual display of a program’s audio. In a livestream, the text appears as the event happens, helping viewers follow speech when they cannot hear it clearly or prefer to read along.
YouTube supports two broad approaches: captions generated automatically by YouTube, and captions supplied by the creator through an encoder or a captioning workflow. Automatic captions are simpler to set up, but offer less control and depend on feature availability and audio conditions. Supplied captions require compatible equipment, software, or a captioner, but let you plan a dedicated caption workflow.
Turn on YouTube’s automatic live captions
YouTube’s documented live automatic-caption workflow is English-only, requires normal latency, and must be enabled for each stream. The feature is being rolled out gradually, so the controls may not appear for every channel. Check the current settings in your own Live Control Room rather than assuming your channel is eligible.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In YouTube Studio, open Go live and select Stream.
- Open the stream settings and turn on Closed captions.
- Choose Automatic captions as the caption source.
- Select the video language, then check the preview to confirm captions appear.
YouTube’s current Help guidance mentions channels with more than 1,000 subscribers in its troubleshooting information about the gradual rollout. That detail is not a guarantee that every channel above that threshold has access; the setting in your Studio account is the practical check.
When automatic captions may not appear or may be inaccurate
- The feature is not available to your channel yet: rollout is gradual. Check Studio’s stream settings.
- The stream uses low or ultra-low latency: YouTube’s documented automatic-caption workflow requires normal latency.
- The spoken language is unsupported: the documented live automatic-caption option is English-only.
- Audio is unclear or speech is difficult to recognize: poor sound can interfere with recognition. Check the audio in the stream preview and improve the capture if needed.
- People speak over one another: overlapping speakers can make captions unreliable.
- Multiple languages are spoken at once: simultaneous languages can prevent useful automatic captions.
Choose the latency that fits the event
Latency is the delay between the camera capturing an event and viewers seeing it. The right setting depends on whether interaction or a dependable viewing experience matters more. YouTube’s figures below describe what most viewers typically experience, not guaranteed service levels.

| Latency setting | Typical use and trade-off |
|---|---|
| Normal | Best for non-interactive streams; provides the least buffering and supports all resolutions and live features. Required by YouTube’s documented automatic-caption workflow. |
| Low | For limited interaction; most viewers experience less than 10 seconds of latency, with potentially more buffering than normal latency. |
| Ultra-low | For highly interactive streams; most viewers experience less than five seconds of latency, but buffering may increase. |
Webcam and mobile streams are set up for interactivity and do not let the creator choose a latency setting, according to YouTube’s guidance. If live automatic captions are essential, account for the normal-latency requirement before choosing an interactive mode.
Use supplied captions for more control
YouTube documents two supplied-caption routes: embed EIA 608/CEA 708 captions in the video, or send a caption feed from supported software to a signed HTTP ingestion URL. These approaches involve more setup than automatic captions, so test the complete workflow before the event.

Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
- In the stream setup, turn on Closed captions and choose Embedded 608/708.
- Configure your encoder to provide EIA 608 or CEA 708 caption data.
- Test the stream and confirm captions appear in the preview.
The 608/708 standard can support up to four language tracks, but YouTube’s live caption requirements say YouTube currently supports one caption track for embedded captions. Confirm the current YouTube and encoder instructions for your setup.
Send a caption feed from supported software
- In the event’s Advanced settings, set a broadcast delay of 30 or 60 seconds, as directed by YouTube’s caption-feed instructions.
- Turn on Closed captions in the stream setup and copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL.
- Give that URL to the captioner to enter in compatible captioning software. YouTube allows one caption feed per stream entry point.
- Keep the system clock accurate and check whether antivirus software interferes with the captioning program.
- Test the feed before the event, including the delay and the caption display in YouTube.
YouTube lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as software examples. Its Help page gives minimum versions for some products: Eclipse/AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or greater, Case CATalyst BCS 14.52 or greater, and CaptionMaker 5.22 or later. Compatibility and vendor requirements can change, so confirm the current version and setup details with the software provider before relying on it for an event.

Test captions and audio before going live
- Run a test stream with speech, movement, and audio conditions similar to the planned event.
- Listen to the preview for clear, intelligible speech; monitor stream health as well as the caption display.
- Confirm the selected caption source, language, and latency match the event plan.
- If automatic captions are missing or unsuitable, arrange a supported supplied-caption workflow and test it before the broadcast.
YouTube recommends testing streams and monitoring audio and stream health. Encoder-based streaming can use external audio and video hardware, but expensive equipment is not required to begin streaming. A microphone is optional; clearer captured speech may help when poor sound is the problem, but no microphone guarantees accurate recognition.
Do live captions stay on the replay?
YouTube says automatic captions displayed live do not remain on the video after the stream ends. It generates captions again through its video-on-demand process, and those captions may differ from the live display. Review the archived video and its captions after the event. For externally supplied captions, the cited YouTube guidance does not establish a single archive outcome for every workflow, so check the recording separately.

Which caption workflow should you use?
| Consideration | Automatic captions | Supplied or professional captions |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Channel feature required; documented live support is English-only and normal-latency. | Compatible encoder or software and a configured caption workflow required. |
| Control | YouTube generates the text; audio conditions can affect results. | Captions are supplied through embedded data or a caption feed. |
| Setup | Enable per stream in YouTube Studio. | Configure encoder or software; an event feed also involves a delay and signed URL handoff. |
| Replay behavior | YouTube generates new captions for the VOD, which may differ from the live captions. | Archive behavior depends on the workflow; verify the recording. |
| Best fit | Eligible English streams where normal latency works. | Events that need a professional caption workflow or cannot rely on automatic-caption availability. |
