Convert the ProRes file to an MP4 containing H.264 video and compatible audio, then check the export before uploading it. For a practical starting point, use the source’s resolution and frame rate, choose an appropriate HandBrake Creator preset or configure FFmpeg, and refer to YouTube’s bitrate recommendations. There is no universal compression ratio: the resulting size and image quality depend on the footage and encoding choices.

What changes when you convert ProRes to MP4?

ProRes is a family of codecs designed for editing workflows. Apple’s April 2022 white paper describes ProRes across full-frame 10-bit 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 HD, 2K, 4K, 6K, 8K, and larger source workflows (Apple ProRes white paper). That flexibility can mean large source files; converting to H.264 in an MP4 container can produce a more upload-friendly file.

MP4 is a container, not a video codec. For YouTube, its published upload guidance recommends an MP4 container and H.264 video, and lists AAC-LC among audio options (YouTube recommended upload encoding settings). The conversion is a re-encode, so settings affect both size and visual quality. No single output size or percentage reduction applies to every ProRes file.

Inspect the ProRes file before choosing settings

Check the source’s resolution, frame rate, color type (SDR or HDR), and audio tracks. ProRes files do not all share the same picture or audio characteristics. These details determine which preset and export settings are sensible.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Resolution: Decide whether to preserve the source resolution or export at a lower one. Use YouTube’s bitrate references for the chosen output resolution.
  • Frame rate: YouTube recommends encoding and uploading at the frame rate used during recording. Avoid changing it unless the project has a deliberate reason to do so.
  • Color: Identify whether the footage is SDR or HDR before converting. YouTube recommends BT.709 for SDR and provides separate guidance for HDR; do not apply an SDR conversion recipe blindly to HDR footage.
  • Audio: Note which tracks and channels you need to retain, then verify the exported audio.

Choose a conversion route

HandBrake: a graphical workflow

  1. Open the ProRes file in HandBrake and inspect the source information.
  2. Choose a Creator preset appropriate to the intended resolution and frame-rate needs. HandBrake describes these presets as intended for videos uploaded to hosting services such as YouTube; a preset is a starting point, not proof of an optimal setting for every file (HandBrake official presets).
  3. Review the video settings, audio tracks, and picture settings. Confirm that the output matches the intended resolution and recorded frame rate, and choose encoding settings that reflect your size-versus-quality priorities.
  4. Set the destination filename with an MP4 extension and start the encode.
  5. Open the exported file and check picture, sound, duration, and color before uploading.

FFmpeg: a configurable command-line workflow

FFmpeg is an option if you are comfortable with command-line encoding and want repeatable settings for multiple files. Its documentation describes configurable encoder options, but the cited documentation is not a tested ProRes-to-H.264 recipe (FFmpeg documentation).

  1. Check that your installed FFmpeg build can read the source and includes the encoder you intend to use.
  2. Inspect the input streams so you know the video resolution, frame rate, color characteristics, and available audio tracks.
  3. Choose H.264 video, a compatible audio format such as AAC-LC, and MP4 as the output container. Set the output resolution and frame rate deliberately, preserving the recording’s frame rate unless you have a specific reason to change it.
  4. Choose a target bitrate or quality setting based on the file-size and visual-quality balance you want. FFmpeg exposes encoder options, but the right values depend on the source and your goal.
  5. Encode to a new file, then play it back and check the picture, sound, duration, and color before uploading.

Because FFmpeg options depend on the encoder and build, check the documentation for the encoder you are using rather than copying a command intended for a different setup.

Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance as a reference

YouTube’s upload page gives bitrate references by resolution and frame-rate class. For SDR at standard frame rates, it lists 8 Mbps for 1080p and 35–45 Mbps for 2160p. These are recommendations, not a promise of a particular output size or visual result. Consult the current YouTube table for other resolutions and high-frame-rate classes; do not treat the two figures here as universal settings (YouTube encoding guidance).

Higher bitrate generally means a larger output file, but bitrate alone does not determine perceived quality. Duration, resolution, frame rate, image content, and encoder settings all affect final size. A complex, detailed scene can require more data than a static image at the same nominal settings.

For SDR, YouTube recommends BT.709. If the source is HDR, follow YouTube’s separate HDR guidance and preserve an appropriate HDR workflow rather than forcing an SDR color conversion. The upload guidance also includes specifications for partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager; those partner-only details should not be mistaken for universal upload requirements.

Check the MP4 before uploading

  • Play the whole export or review representative sections from beginning, middle, and end.
  • Check that motion looks smooth and that fine detail, gradients, and dark areas are acceptable at the intended viewing size.
  • Listen for missing tracks, clipped sound, sync problems, or an unintended channel mix.
  • Compare duration and color with the source, especially if the footage is HDR or uses a less common color space.
  • Confirm the output file is a playable MP4 and that its size is suitable for your upload connection and storage.

If the file is still too large, consider a lower target bitrate or resolution and make another export, then compare the result before replacing the original. Keep the ProRes source until you are satisfied with the upload file.

Common conversion problems

The MP4 is much larger than expected

Check the selected bitrate, resolution, and duration. A high-resolution or high-frame-rate export, or a high target bitrate, can keep the file large. Reduce bitrate or resolution incrementally and inspect the resulting quality; there is no fixed ProRes-to-MP4 reduction percentage.

The exported picture looks soft or blocky

The encoder may be using too little data for the resolution, frame rate, or visual complexity. Try a higher bitrate or quality setting, then compare the relevant scenes. YouTube’s recommendation is a reference point, not a guarantee for every source.

Color looks different after export

Recheck whether the source is SDR or HDR and review the color handling in the export. YouTube recommends BT.709 for SDR and has separate HDR guidance. Do not apply an SDR setting to HDR footage without an intentional conversion workflow.

Motion looks wrong

Check that the output frame rate matches the recording. YouTube recommends using the frame rate at which the video was recorded; a changed frame rate can alter motion cadence.

Audio is missing or incorrect

Review which source track was selected and which track was included in the export. Confirm the chosen audio format is compatible, then play the exported file before upload.

Or let it run in the cloud

Converting a file makes it smaller for upload; it does not keep a YouTube live stream running. If your next step is looping pre-recorded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streaming, not camera broadcasting. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
