To keep a YouTube stream live around the clock, first make sure your channel can stream, then create a broadcast in YouTube Studio and send it from an encoder configured for a stable connection. Rehearse the entire path, prepare a recovery plan, and monitor the stream; YouTube’s setup guidance does not guarantee that a single 24/7 broadcast will stay uninterrupted or be fully archived.
Choose the right way to go live
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder-based live streaming. For a gaming stream with gameplay capture, scenes, overlays, or a dedicated production setup, an encoder is usually the flexible option. A phone or webcam can be simpler for a basic broadcast. You do not need expensive equipment just to start.
This guide focuses on the encoder workflow, where reliability depends on the complete chain: your channel, the YouTube broadcast, the encoder, the upload connection, and the viewer’s playback. YouTube’s setup guidance offers event preparation steps, not a guaranteed 24/7 uptime architecture.
Check channel eligibility before configuring anything
- Verify the YouTube channel.
- Confirm the channel has had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days.
- Choose the stream format and the encoder you plan to use, and confirm that the encoder supports the chosen ingest protocol and video settings.
Resolve eligibility issues before building the rest of the setup; otherwise, a correctly configured encoder may still be unable to start a broadcast.

Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create a live stream or schedule one. Enter the title, visibility, and other broadcast details.
- If you schedule the stream, use its watch page to share the broadcast in advance and let viewers set reminders.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the broadcast settings into the encoder’s streaming destination fields.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes it as the encoder’s password and address for sending the feed. Use a custom key only if your workflow benefits from reusing one. If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace it in the encoder.
Set conservative encoder settings
YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds (not more than four seconds), up to 60 frames per second, and AAC or MP3 audio. RTMPS is the encrypted transport option for the standard encoder workflow.
Use the current YouTube bitrate table when configuring your encoder: recommended rates vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec, and platform guidance can change. As examples from YouTube’s cited H.264 recommendations, 1080p at 30 fps is 10 Mbps and 1080p at 60 fps is 12 Mbps. These are reference recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain those rates. A lower resolution or frame rate that stays stable is preferable to a sharper feed that repeatedly drops.

Pick a resolution your upload can sustain
Choose the target resolution and frame rate based on the actual sustained upload capacity where the stream will run. Gameplay with fast movement may benefit from a higher frame rate, but it requires more bitrate and connection capacity. If your upload varies, start with a more conservative profile and test it under representative conditions.
Use HLS only when the workflow calls for it
RTMP or RTMPS is the general encoder path. YouTube also supports HLS for some use cases, including HDR or codecs not supported through RTMP. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency, so use it only when your production needs it and your encoder supports it.

Balance latency against playback stability
Lower latency can reduce the delay between the broadcast and viewers, but it can increase buffering. For a continuous gaming channel without real-time audience interaction, low latency may matter less than steady playback.
Plan upload capacity and a backup
Measure upload speed at the location and, as far as possible, at the time of day the stream will operate. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom and says to account for the primary bitrate, backup bitrate, and that headroom. A speed test is only a snapshot: shared-network use and changes in connectivity can leave the encoder with less bandwidth than expected. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Compare sustained upload capacity with the total bitrate your chosen streaming and backup configuration requires, then retain the recommended 20% margin.
- Where practical, use a wired connection for the encoder and avoid saturating the same network with large uploads or other heavy traffic.
- Consider a backup internet connection or encoder path if an interruption would be costly. These are operational choices, not universal YouTube requirements, and they do not guarantee uninterrupted viewing.
- For a local streaming computer, a UPS is an optional safeguard against some power interruptions, not a promise that the broadcast will stay live.
Rehearse the whole viewer path before launch
- Prepare the encoder stream at least two hours ahead of a scheduled broadcast, following YouTube’s event-preparation guidance.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
- Check that the encoder is sending to the intended broadcast, then inspect the preview in Live Control Room before starting the stream.
- Test failover. YouTube’s guidance describes stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and checking that playback switches to the backup.
- Open the watch page from a separate device and check playback on mobile as well as the viewing setup you expect your audience to use.
- Listen for clean audio and inspect picture quality, motion, and synchronization. Test representative game scenes and audio, not just a static menu.
- If recording locally, check the saved file and confirm it is growing before relying on it as an archive.
Make continuous operation manageable
A 24/7 stream needs a routine beyond the launch checklist. Keep a written preflight for the channel, stream key, encoder profile, audio, upload connection, and backup path. Decide who or what will notice an encoder, network, or power failure, and how the broadcast will be restarted. Monitor stream health and sound and picture quality continuously; an encoder reporting that it is sending does not by itself confirm that viewers can watch correctly.
Separate broadcast continuity from recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one longer, continuous 24/7 broadcast will be fully archived. If a complete recording matters, make an independent local recording or plan shorter segments, and verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on its archive.

Keep the channel safe for a gaming audience
Before leaving a game, soundtrack, or other material on an unattended loop, confirm you have the rights to broadcast it. A live stream is still subject to YouTube’s copyright rules; permission to play a game does not automatically mean every song or other included asset is cleared for a live broadcast. Review the game publisher’s streaming policy and the rights for music, overlays, and other third-party content. YouTube also has channel monetization policies for reused content; uninterrupted repetition alone should not be treated as a guarantee of monetization eligibility. See the copyright safety checklist before scheduling a long-running loop.
Troubleshoot common failures
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder cannot connect to YouTube | Incorrect stream URL or key, a reset key still saved in the encoder, or a broadcast that is not set up as expected. | Check the destination fields against the current Live Control Room details. If the key was reset, update the encoder with the new one. |
| The stream drops or repeatedly disconnects | Insufficient or fluctuating upload capacity, network congestion, or a failed primary path. | Measure upload at operating time, reduce resolution or bitrate if needed, preserve headroom, and test the backup path. |
| Viewers report buffering | The stream may be using more bandwidth than the connection or viewers’ playback conditions can sustain; a lower-latency mode can also increase buffering. | Review stream health and connection stability. Test a less demanding encoder profile and reconsider whether low latency is necessary. |
| Picture quality is poor or motion breaks up | The encoder profile may not suit the content or available connection, or the stream may not be sending the settings you intended. | Check resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance and the actual upload connection. Test representative gameplay. |
| The stream is live but audio is missing or wrong | The wrong audio input or encoder track may be selected, or the mix may not be reaching the output. | Preview and monitor audio from the stream itself; verify the selected input, levels, and AAC or MP3 output before leaving the stream unattended. |
| The broadcast ends and does not recover as expected | Failover or restart behavior may not be configured or may not work for the particular encoder setup. | Run a deliberate failover rehearsal before launch, observe what viewers see, and document who will restart the stream if recovery fails. |
| A complete archive is missing | A single broadcast longer than 12 hours is outside the stated automatic-archive coverage. | Use a local recording or planned shorter broadcasts if a complete copy is important, and verify current YouTube archive behavior. |
