The encoder continues running on the server after your local SSH connection ends. This protects against a lost SSH connection—not an encoder crash, VPS reboot, or provider outage.
What tmux does—and what it does not
tmux keeps a terminal session running on the VPS when you detach or your SSH client disconnects. The key requirement is that the encoder itself is started on the VPS, inside that tmux session. A tmux session on your laptop cannot keep a locally running encoder alive after the laptop or its connection goes away.
tmux is not a process monitor or a backup system. It does not restart a crashed encoder or make a process survive a reboot or an unavailable host. Those require separate recovery arrangements.
Start the encoder in tmux and disconnect safely
- Connect to the VPS over SSH. Log in to the same server account that will own the encoder process. Confirm that
tmuxis installed; if it is not, install it using the package manager for your VPS operating system. - Create a named session: run
tmux new -s youtube-live. The command opens a shell inside a tmux session namedyoutube-live. - Start the encoder inside that shell. Configure it to send the video to YouTube, then check that the stream is reaching YouTube before detaching. Do not start the encoder in a separate local terminal and expect the VPS session to protect it.
- Detach without stopping the encoder: press
Ctrl-b, release the keys, then pressd. You return to the regular SSH shell; the tmux session and its processes remain on the VPS. - Close SSH. You can end the SSH connection after detaching. The encoder continues only while the VPS and encoder process remain available.
- Reconnect and inspect the session later: SSH into the same VPS account and run
tmux ls. To return to the named session, runtmux attach -t youtube-live. You can inspect the encoder’s output and interact with it from there. - Stop intentionally: reattach to the session and stop the encoder cleanly using the method appropriate for that encoder. When finished, exit the shell or close the tmux session.
Keep the YouTube stream key out of public logs, screenshots, shared terminal output, and shell history where possible. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s configuration. The stream key is a credential as well as part of the connection details YouTube uses to accept the encoder feed.
- Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure extension of RTMP.
- Choose an encoder-compatible codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval that the VPS can sustain. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingestion options, up to 60 fps; it recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Check the current YouTube settings for the recommended bitrate for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the feed. Test with similar movement and audio to the intended stream, and monitor the stream while it runs.
Check VPS bandwidth and stream health
The VPS has its own outbound network path, separate from your home connection. YouTube says the stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Check the VPS provider’s network policy and sustained outbound throughput; a speed test from your laptop does not establish what the VPS can send.
- If stream health reports insufficient bandwidth, reduce the encoder bitrate or choose settings the VPS can sustain.
- If the encoder connects but the YouTube preview is missing or unhealthy, inspect the encoder output and Live Control Room status before changing several settings at once.
- Test the whole path—from the VPS through YouTube’s ingest—before depending on it for a long stream.
Know which failure you are trying to prevent

First-time setup and ending the stream
YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Its getting-started guidance also requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Complete eligibility and setup before planning a broadcast.

An SSH disconnect does not itself end the YouTube event. YouTube’s encoder guidance says to stop sending content to end a stream; streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Check the event’s state in Studio and follow the intended lifecycle rather than treating a closed SSH window as a stop command.
