If you are 18 or older, YouTube’s guidance is to ask the school administrator to mark the account as over 18; then sign in and complete YouTube’s channel-creation workflow. If you are under 18, follow school policy—do not change or misstate your age to get around the restriction.
Why a school YouTube account may not be able to stream
A school-issued Google Workspace for Education account is managed by the school, including its access to YouTube. YouTube says that if the administrator marks a student as under 18, the school account moves to a limited version of YouTube, and features such as creating or using a channel and live streaming may be unavailable. See YouTube’s guidance on changes to school accounts.
This is an account-level school setting, not a problem that a webcam, encoder, or streaming service can fix. YouTube says the change to the school account does not affect a separate personal YouTube account.
What to do if you are 18 or older
- Contact the school administrator or IT help desk. Explain that YouTube’s school-account help says adults whose school account is marked under 18 should ask the administrator to mark it over 18.
- Ask them to review the age designation and the settings that apply to your account. Workspace settings may be applied to a user, an organizational unit, or a configuration group.
- Wait for the administrator to confirm the change. Then sign in to YouTube with the school account and complete the channel-creation workflow.
- Check the channel’s live-stream eligibility separately. An age designation update does not itself satisfy YouTube’s other live-stream requirements.
If you are under 18
YouTube’s school-account guidance describes restricted features for accounts designated under 18; it does not provide the same over-18 remedy for underage users. Follow your school’s rules and do not misstate your age. If you think the school has recorded your age incorrectly, contact the school administrator to have the account information reviewed.

Check other live-stream requirements
The school age setting is only one possible cause. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days to stream. YouTube’s minimum age to live stream is 16. Check the specific channel’s notices in YouTube Studio and the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Channel not verified: Complete YouTube’s channel verification process, then check whether live streaming is available.
- Recent or active restriction: Review the notice and the relevant copyright or Community Guidelines status for that channel. YouTube lists copyright and Community Guidelines enforcement among reasons that can affect live streaming.
- Other channel conditions or a daily limit: YouTube’s restrictions guidance also describes cases involving channels with many videos whose features are disabled and daily streaming limits. Follow the channel-specific notice for the applicable details.
Do not switch to another channel to get around an active live-stream restriction. YouTube prohibits using another channel to circumvent a restriction while it is in effect. See YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions guidance.

What the school administrator should check
For an adult, the relevant fix is the school account’s age designation—not simply opening up YouTube viewing. Google’s administrator documentation says YouTube settings can be applied to organizational units or configuration groups, with group settings taking precedence over organizational-unit settings.
The separate “Unrestricted YouTube access” control is under Admin console → Apps → Additional Google Services → YouTube → Permissions and requires the Service Settings administrator privilege. It concerns viewing YouTube content; it does not replace the account’s over-18 designation. Google’s Education guidance also says under-18 users cannot access content marked 18+. Administrators can consult Google Workspace for Education’s YouTube settings help.

Do not confuse a school account with a family-supervised account
YouTube describes supervised kid accounts as a feature for personal accounts, not schools or educational organizations. Similar controls for Workspace for Education accounts are managed by administrators in the Admin console. If the account belongs to a school, contact the institution’s administrator rather than looking for family supervision settings. See YouTube’s supervised experience FAQ.
