For a YouTube 24/7 channel, an emergency playlist can keep prerecorded material playing if the program needs to switch to backup content—but a looping playlist alone cannot recover a failed computer, encoder, or internet connection. In OBS, loop one file with a Media Source or several files with a VLC Video source. For resilience, rehearse that content switch separately from YouTube’s backup-encoder failover.
Choose the fallback that covers the failure you expect
| Option | Best for | Dependencies and limits |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source with Loop | One local video file | Built into OBS. Repeats the media, but does not solve encoder or network failure. |
| OBS VLC Video with Loop Playlist | Several local files played in order or shuffle | Requires VLC installed with the same bitness as OBS. Playback looping is not automatic failover. |
| YouTube backup encoder | A separate encoder path for encoder redundancy | Must be configured and tested. The operator should verify that playback rolls over to it. |
| HLS backup ingestion | A compatible HLS encoder that needs a backup ingestion endpoint | Requires compatible HLS configuration and has higher latency than RTMP. A backup ingestion URL is not playlist-based content switching. |
There is no documented one-click YouTube feature that automatically substitutes a local emergency playlist when the live program disappears. Treat the playlist as a content fallback that an operator activates or a production system routes to; treat encoder and network redundancy as separate safeguards.
Prepare emergency media
- Choose short, rights-cleared videos suitable for the channel. Avoid files that would create an unintended blank screen or silence.
- Keep the files on the computer running OBS. Open each file and confirm that its picture and audio play as intended.
- Decide whether the playlist should run in a fixed order or shuffle. A fixed sequence is usually easier to review for emergency messaging.
Rights clearance and editorial suitability are important planning checks; they do not guarantee YouTube will accept or monetize a stream.
Build and loop the playlist in OBS
For one repeating video
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene intended for fallback use.
- Select the prepared file and enable Loop in the source settings.
- Preview the scene and verify that the file restarts cleanly after it ends, with both audio and video.
For several videos
- Install VLC on the OBS computer. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source; use a VLC installation whose bitness matches OBS.
- Add a VLC Video source to the fallback scene and load the prepared files into its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then choose the intended order or shuffle behavior.
- Preview the source through a full cycle, checking transitions, audio levels, and the restart after the final item.
OBS documents the Media Source and VLC Video playback options in its Media Sources guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connect OBS to the YouTube live stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the encoder stream you will use. Find its stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the stream URL and key in OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, and reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Start OBS early enough to inspect the incoming feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Confirm the video and audio there before relying on the setup.
- Check the published watch page on desktop and mobile, including audio. A healthy OBS preview alone does not establish that viewers can watch the published stream.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers stream URL and key configuration, preview, and ending a stream.
Test the switch and the recovery plan
- Rehearse how the operator activates the fallback scene or how the production system routes to it. Confirm who is responsible and how they will know a switch is needed.
- Separately configure a backup encoder if encoder redundancy is required. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup encoder.
- Write down the operator, alert route, recovery steps, and escalation contact somewhere accessible if the streaming computer fails.
A looping source can keep media playback going while OBS and its computer are operating; it cannot restart a crashed host, restore internet access, or guarantee delivery. YouTube recommends a reliable connection and 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. This is an operational recommendation, not a guarantee against outages.

Know the limits of long streams
For a 24/7 broadcast, do not assume every part of the stream will be available to rewind or archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s DVR guidance and encoder instructions when planning records or viewer rewind.
Compatible HLS encoder setups can use a backup ingestion server URL, but that is an ingest endpoint, not a content-level playlist switch. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance also notes HLS has higher latency than RTMP.

Common problems and fixes
- The VLC Video source is missing or unavailable: Install VLC and ensure its bitness matches OBS, then reopen OBS and check the source again.
- The playlist stops at the last file: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled. For a single Media Source, check Loop instead.
- The video loops, but the live stream still stops: The playlist only handles media playback. Check the computer, OBS, and network; use a separately configured and tested backup encoder for encoder redundancy.
- OBS is sending, but the YouTube page is not ready: Check the stream URL and key in OBS, then inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and published watch page.
- The fallback contains a black screen or unintended silence: Open the source files directly, inspect the OBS scene, and rehearse the full playlist cycle with audio monitoring before using it live.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement key.
